Led by 2023 Grammy-winning pianist/composer Kris Davis, this special concert is named for Davis’s 2019 breakthrough album, which was awarded “Jazz Album of the Year” by both The New York Times and NPR. “Bringing together wildly diverse musicians in tangled unity,” Davis often sets her improvisations to “grooves played with prismatic nuance” (The New York Times) by drummer Terri Lyne Carrington—a four-time Grammy winner and NEA Jazz Master herself. Turntablist and electronic musician Val Jeanty, bassist Trevor Dunn, and guitarist Julian Lage add layers of sonic texture for a thrilling and unexpected sound.

Terri Lyne Carrington presents an evening of jazz tunes composed by women – now there’s an idea. For too long, jazz standards – the tunes that dominate jazz repertory and that young musicians are taught to master – have almost exclusively been composed by men. From “My Funny Valentine” to “Maiden Voyage,” they are beloved compositions. But where are the women? As founder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice, Carrington has curated a newly published compilation of New Standards composed by women, including Carla Bley, Cassandra Wilson, Marilyn Crispell, Lil Hardin Armstrong, Eliane Elias, Jaime Branch, Luciana Souza, Hiromi, Emily Remler, Anat Cohen, and others.

Seen-Unseen: The Symphonic Legacy of Black American Women

Outstanding activist, educator, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and her band Social Science join Celebrity Series this season, two years after earning a Grammy nomination for their album, Waiting Game. Carrington is a 2023 Grammy awardee for her New Standards, Vol. 1, a kindred project to Social Science that pulls forward the work of neglected female songwriters to create a new catalogue of jazz standards. Special guests Chelsey Green and Toki Wright join the group for a multi-dimensional vocal and instrumental musical experience.
