Momentum, presented by Charleston Jazz, is an exciting, electric band with some of the finest musicians in the Lowcountry. Led by Demetrius Doctor, they create an eclectic mix of Classic and Contemporary Fusion, R&B, Soul Jazz, and Gospel. On this special evening, Momentum plays some of the most beloved songs by Stevie Wonder, Jon Batiste, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Jill Scott, and Snarky Puppy and features an exciting group of All Star musicians!

In a rollicking homecoming concert, Quentin Baxter electrifies the Cistern Yard— where, as a child, he heard evening concerts from outside its wrought-iron gates. While the Grammy-winning drummer—a Spoleto veteran—has anchored other ensembles, this evening puts Baxter front and center, leading a phenomenal band through time-honored classics and his own compositions that infuse modern jazz with the Gullah and church traditions of his Charleston roots.

Matt White’s Dolly is a reimagining of the early music of Dolly Parton, combining her incredible song writing and lyrics with contemporary musical styles and improvisation. Currently the Chair of Jazz Studies at the University of South Carolina, Matt was drawn to Dolly’s early career and imagined how her music, often tackling themes of poverty and gender equality, could be reconstructed by connecting southern roots music with contemporary styles and production. Piano Legends celebrates and explores the rich legacy of iconic pianists throughout Jazz history. Spanning the evolution of jazz from Ragtime to Modern Fusion, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra will present the styles and innovations of legendary jazz pianists such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans, to showcase how this grandiose instrument shaped the genre’s emotional and harmonic language. Featured with your Charleston Jazz Orchestra will be 4 outstanding members of our jazz piano community to pay homage to the Piano Legends who shaped its sound.
