A little under half a century after its 1742 world premiere in Dublin, it was performed for the first time in the revised and rescored German-language version Der Messias created by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The “German Messiah” thus is the fruit of an extraordinary “collaboration” between two geniuses: the scintillating brilliance of Händel as interpreted by Mozart.

Handel’s Oratorio Messiah is probably the most celebrated choral work and the Hallelujah Chorus is instantly recognisable. The Huddersfield Choral Society annual Christmas Messiah performance is a Huddersfield tradition, broken only once since 1864. It is also the Choral’s signature piece, with a number of notable recordings beginning with Sir Malcolm Sargent in the 1950s and most recently with Jane Glover (now Dame Jane Glover) in 2010.

The anticipated return of the “Gold Standard” (The New York Times) performance of Handel’s Messiah welcomes acclaimed guest conductor Jane Glover to performances on December 11–13. Trinity’s Messiah performance is a cherished holiday tradition that has captivated audiences for centuries. (Trinity first presented Messiah in 1770.) Trinity’s unique Messiah is performed in a sacred space, on period instruments, with soloists from Trinity Choir chosen to best complement each aria and recitative.

The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra’s December concert has become a favorite holiday tradition for music lovers of all ages. For two hours, including an intermission, attendees will be treated to a rare opportunity to hear Alice Tully Hall’s magnificent 4,200-pipe organ. This lush and powerful instrument will serve as the centerpiece in a program meticulously curated to showcase its grandiosity. Nine extraordinary artists, including renowned organist Paolo Bordignon, will perform a selection of transcriptions by Bach himself, organ solos featuring a French holiday carol, and more, bringing the rich textures and intricate harmonies of the Baroque era to life.

The program features a diverse range of compositions, from Alessandro Scarlatti's "Three Arias for Trumpet, Oboe, and Organ" to George Frideric Handel's "Concerto in A major for Organ, HWV 307, Op. 7, No. 2". Each piece has been carefully selected to highlight the unique capabilities of the organ, as well as the virtuosity of the performers.

In addition to Bordignon, the concert will feature performances by violinists Benjamin Beilman and Alexander Sitkovetsky, violist Matthew Lipman, cellist Keith Robinson, double bassist Edgar Meyer, oboists James Austin Smith and Juri Vallentin, and trumpeter David Washburn. These acclaimed musicians, each with their own impressive career and contributions to the world of classical music, will come together to create an evening of unparalleled musical excellence.
