As the Passover season begins, please join us as 200+ Bruins gather on the Royce Hall stage to perform one of Handel’s greatest and most colorful biblical oratorios, Israel in Egypt. Premiered in London in 1739, Israel in Egypt tells the story of the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and features monumental choral writing, including vivid musical depictions of the ten plagues. UCLA voice soloists, Chorale, Chamber Singers and Philharmonia come together for this grand event.

JS Bach’s Magnificat in D is one of the best-loved works in the choral repertoire. Taken from Luke’s gospel, the text is the Virgin Mary’s canticle celebrating her pregnancy with the promised Messiah. Even today, the magic of this music remains unbroken. In this Opéra de Monte-Carlo production, director Davide Livermore transfers the action to a luxurious cruise ship on the Nile. This will be a dazzling performance on our very own queen of instruments! Our guest is the Spaniard Juan de la Rubia, organist at the famous Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona. He begins his multifaceted program with the magnificent overture to Handel's 1743 psychological drama "Samson." A superb example of French Renaissance music is Eustache du Caurroy's 1610 Fantasia on the then-popular and enchanting song "Une jeune fillette." Profound emotion stands alongside explosive outbursts in Bach's legendary Chaconne in D minor. Charles Tournemire never wrote down his choral improvisations, such as the one on the Easter sequence "Victimae Paschali Laudes"—they survive only because he recorded them as early as 1930. Jehan Alain, who died young in World War II, wrote impressive variations on a folk song by the 16th-century master Clément Janequin.

Our fourth classical concert is very special because we celebrate the return of Pepe Romero to Long Beach Symphony.

Pepe is a living legend who is not only one of the most wonderful musicians I have ever worked with, but also an incredible person who brings an irresistible humanity to the stage and to his music. I think it is that combination of incredible artistry and personality that makes his music-making so unique. I hope you can join us for this singular event. Pepe will perform the guitar concerto of all guitar concertos, the Concierto de Aranjuez by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo, a concerto that transports us to Spain. The first movement is infused with dance-like rhythms– but I really think that the crown jewel of this work is the truly magical second movement, the slow movement and its haunting melody for English horn. It is one of the most beautiful melodies ever composed.

Andrea Marcon and the Venice Baroque Orchestra have Vivaldi in their blood. More precisely, in their bow. The Venetian master composer translated the chatter of his hometown into musical characters. To enhance the international flair of her performance of the popular Four Seasons, Marcon’s musical native speakers have invited a French-Swiss baroque violinist with Armenian roots. Chouchane Siranossian is a star on her instrument who we look forward to presenting at the Festspielhaus.

A quirky comedy of oversized egos in a dysfunctional first family brought the 24-year-old Handel his breakthrough in the Italian opera scene, and thus in the world. Sparkling melodies and hair-raising turf wars made him "everybody's darling" in the "Las Vegas" of the 18th century – Venice was then Europe's number one entertainment capital. His nickname "Il caro Sassone – Our dear Saxon" came about with "Agrippina." “In every second without music, clapping and shouts of ‘Viva il caro Sassone – Long live the dear Saxon!’ and other expressions of applause, too exaggerated to quote here, shook the theater,” reported John Mainwaring. “Everyone was astonished by the grandeur and sublimity of his style, for until then no one here had heard anything remotely resembling such powerful harmonies and such dense modulations, combined in such a magical way.”

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter…. Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons depicts the passing of the year in evocative string music, from a barking dog in spring to an icy storm of winter. It takes a special violinist to bring it to life, and we have our own, Sophie Rosa, to perform it for you.

If that’s not enough Baroque’n’roll, we’ve also got Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 – with its second movement also known as the Air on a G String in a later adaptation. And for Baroque (coronation) anthems, we’re joined by Derby Cathedral Choir for music celebrating the coronation of King George II in 1727. Or, as you might know Handel’s Zadok The Priest, the music crowning Paris St Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester City as the official anthem of the UEFA Champions League.

Founded 40 years ago, Concerto Köln is one of the outstanding protagonists of early music. It's fortunate that the journey to Duisburg is not far – and that the Duisburg Philharmonic also includes seasoned experts in musically informed performance practice. This creates ideal conditions for an extraordinary encounter in a concert that brings together well-known and lesser-known masterpieces by composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Examples such as those of the Italian Antonio Vivaldi, the German George Frideric Handel, the Frenchman Jean-Philippe Rameau, the Bohemian Jan Dismas Zelenka, and the Englishman Henry Purcell demonstrate that all of Europe was shaken by the tremendous musical developments of this period. Some of these masters will perform "vocal specialties" – arias from operas or sacred works – or, like the piano pioneer Domenico Scarlatti, excerpts from their instrumental works. The name of countertenor Valer Sabadus, who is another guest from Cologne in Duisburg, shines as brilliantly as his voice.

The traditional Christmas concert with the Southern Jutland Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic Choir and Handel's immortal oratorio Messiah is of course also on the program in 2025.


A masterpiece that has thrilled audiences for more than 280 years. The concert is a regular part of the Christmas celebrations in the southern Jutland countryside and is played every other year – a traditional event that both musicians and audiences look forward to with great joy. One of the absolute highlights of the concert is the magnificent Hallelujah choir, which fills concert halls and churches with an almost otherworldly energy.
