Again this year, we invite our audience to experience first performances from four centuries. It is a completely unique way of experiencing the music and its history, where each work can be heard as new, and where the Odense Symphony Orchestra shows the breadth of their musical reach. Impressive baroque overtures by Handel, a classical symphony by Mendelssohn – the lesser-known 1st Symphony – a cornucopia of orchestral sound by Richard Strauss from the 20th century and a premiere performance by the world-famous Danish composer Poul Ruders.

In 1992, Mervyn Warren, a Grammy Award–winning composer-arranger and original member of Take 6, collaborated as an arranger and producer with executive producer Quincy Jones to create a soulful rendition of Handel’s Messiah. Featuring an incredible array of special guests, the album spanned spirituals, blues, jazz, ragtime, big band, fusion, R&B, and hip hop, and won the 1992 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.

She is a woman whose excessive desires lead to her own extinction: The Theban princess Semele is to marry Prince Athamas at her father's request, but falls in love with the god Jupiter, who appears to her in human form. On her wedding day, Semele therefore willingly allows herself to be abducted into his realm. The love-struck Jupiter swears to his new lover that he will grant her every wish. His jealous wife Juno uses this promise for a devious intrigue: In the guise of Semele's sister Ino, she convinces Semele that she can achieve immortality if she sees Jupiter in his true, divine form. In this way, she tells Semele that she wants Jupiter, without revealing to her that the sight of a god is unbearable for a human being. Semele will burn in the face of the real Jupiter.

It’s Handel’s Messiah as you’ve never seen it before! Ulster Touring Opera is delighted to partner with Merry Opera Company in bringing this beautiful and innovative staged production of Handel’s iconic masterpiece to Northern Ireland.

This year will mark the 15th tour of this critically acclaimed production, which has been seen over 14,600 audience members. An Early Music group with a steadily rising reputation tackles Handel’s Italian cantata, first performed in Naples in 1708: it has a similar plot to his better-known English serenata Acis and Galatea of 1718, but an almost entirely different score. However, it lacks an overture, so that to Handel’s first London opera Rinaldo (1711) is co-opted for this occasion.

A pioneer of period instrument music with his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, Ton Koopman is full of energy and has no equal in sharing his immense knowledge of the Baroque and Classical repertoires with modern symphony orchestras. In Praise of Virtue features soprano Hannah DePriest and countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen in two rarely heard solo cantatas: J. S. Bach’s beautifully reflective Ich bin vergnügt (BWV 84) and G. F. Handel’s glittering Splenda l’alba in oriente (HWV 166). Excerpts from Johann Adolph Hasse’s Marc-Antonio e Cleopatra set this noble love story with luscious melodies and spectacular virtuosity, in arias and duets for both soloists.

Handel's 'Water Music' was performed for the first time on the water – up the Thames – when King George I, several aristocrats and officials sailed in the royal barge at Whitehall Palace on an excursion up towards Chelsea. Here another barge, with approximately 50 musicians, followed the King and his company as they performed Handel's music. Many Londoners went out to the river to hear the concert – and the King was so pleased with the music that he ordered it to be repeated at least three times, both on the journey upriver to Chelsea and on the way back until he landed again at Whitehall.

The first performance of the opera "Giulio Cesare in Egitto" took place on February 20, 1724, at the Highmarket Theatre, London, the libretto was written by N. Heim. The musical features characteristic of Georg Handel were clearly manifested in the opera - this is the courageous simplicity of melodies, the drama of arias, and the expressiveness of recitatives. Keeping the usual forms of the opera seria, Handel and Heim filled it with new content. In the center of events in this interpretation is not the image of the commander, but Cleopatra, depicted with ardent sympathy. The opera vividly recreates the atmosphere of intrigue, deceit, and betrayal that reigned at the Egyptian court.

Opera Holland Park is thrilled to present its first production of a Handel opera, "Acis and Galatea," a timeless tale of love, loss, and transformation. This enchanting work, composed in 1718 for a private performance in the gardens of the Duke of Chandos’s palace, draws inspiration from an episode in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Handel's tragicomic serenata is celebrated for its intricate depiction of the love story between the sea nymph Galatea and the shepherd Acis, set against the backdrop of nature's serene beauty, with birdsong and the sound of murmuring waters woven through the music. Their blissful union incites the wrath of the lustful cyclops, Polyphemus, leading to a dramatic climax where Acis is tragically transformed into a natural spring, symbolizing eternal love and the indomitable spirit of nature.

This production is directed by Louise Bakker, with Michael Papadopoulos, a former Opera Holland Park Young Artist and alumnus of the Royal Opera’s Jette Parker scheme, conducting. The cast features Anthony Gregory and Elizabeth Karani as the star-crossed lovers, Acis and Galatea, with South African bass-baritone Chuma Sijeqa portraying the menacing Polyphemus. The creative team includes Alyson Cummins (Designer), Johanne Jensen (Lighting Designer), and Merry Holden (Choreographer), promising a visually stunning and emotionally gripping performance.

Performances are scheduled from July 19 to August 2, 2024, with shows at 7:30 pm. Ticket prices vary, with options available for members and non-members, including special INSPIRE tickets priced at £24, subject to availability. Members can enjoy savings of up to £8 per ticket. This production also features an English libretto by John Gay, surtitles in English, and performances by the City of London Sinfonia and the Opera Holland Park Chorus.

Handel is known for bringing emotion to life, for dazzling vocal fireworks and epic drama, and this oratorio is no exception. Composed in the spring of 1707, it sees him at his most confident, combining rousing choruses, beguiling arias, and colourful orchestral writing.

The story of the knight Orlando, who went insane from love during the age of Charlemagne, was a popular subject for composers, providing Haydn with his most successful opera, Orlando paladino. The sprightly overture introduces this parody of heroism which also has elements of pathos and sincere emotion. Handel’s opera Orlando treats the subject with more gravity, and contains one of the most extraordinary scenes in all of Baroque opera, a mad scene for the title character. Like the Orlando selections, Bach’s Cantata No. 51 is a virtuosic vocal vehicle, as well as giving the trumpeter a serious workout. A favorite operatic stunt in the day was to set up a contest between the singer and trumpeter to see who could hit the higher notes and hold them longer.

Join us for an enchanting evening at the Garsington Opera: Gala Concert, a highlight of the cultural calendar, set to take place on Sunday, 7th July 2024, at 6.20pm. This prestigious event promises an unforgettable experience, showcasing a selection of the most beloved opera arias performed by a stellar cast of artists under the baton of esteemed conductors Douglas Boyd, Jonathon Cole-Swinard, Chloe Rooke, and Tess Jackson.

The Gala Concert will feature performances by a remarkable lineup of vocal talents, including sopranos Natalya Romaniw, Madison Leonard, and Isabelle Peters; mezzo-soprano Christine Rice; tenor Olive Sewell; baritones Roderick Williams and Joshua Hopkins; and bass-baritone Henry Waddington. Accompanied by the Garsington Opera Chorus and the Garsington Opera Youth Company, the evening promises an array of highlights from operatic masterpieces by Beethoven, Britten, Dvořák, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Smetana, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, and Verdi.

The program includes excerpts from iconic works such as Beethoven's "Fidelio," Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Dvořák's "Rusalka," Handel's "Semele," Mozart's "Così fan tutte," "Idomeneo," and "The Magic Flute," Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," Smetana's "The Bartered Bride," Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier," Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin," and Verdi's "La traviata."

This special event also celebrates the opening of Garsington Studios. Attendees are invited to enjoy an afternoon at Wormsley, including a visit to the Studios, tea during a cricket match, a Young Artists’ recital, and a chance to meet the gardeners in the Walled Garden. The Gala Concert itself will be a showcase of our favourite opera arias, providing an immersive experience into the world of opera.

Within the studios, we will not only be showcasing our 2024 cohort of Alvarez Young Artists in short recitals, but our Youth Company will be in an open rehearsal so guests will be able to see the studios in action. Whist offering all of the quintessential elements of a summer’s evening at Wormsley, we will also be inviting the whole audience to join us for a Champagne toast to the Studios prior to the performance.

The powerful “Great” Mass in C Minor offers us Mozart at the height of his brilliance. A work of mysterious origins, the music is a layered, shimmering tapestry. Moods shift constantly, sometimes dazzling, sometimes movingly somber. Left unfinished at Mozart’s death, the mass is lovingly and studiously reimagined by Jos van Veldhoven.

Like much of his work, the Water Music was an 18th-century show stopper. Commissioned by King George I for a concert on the Thames, all of London turned out to see Handel and his orchestra floating up and down the river on a barge, playing this exciting, ceremonial music. It’s a foot-tapping party on and off stage – and the music was such a hit the King demanded an immediate encore!
