Moral outrage one moment, coquettish expediency the next. The intrigues of the powerful interwoven with the desperation of hapless refugees. When it comes to the gamut of human emotion and modes of behaviour, few operas of the baroque period can touch Handel’s GIULIO CESARE IN EGITTO, which premiered in London in 1724. This tale of the love affair between the ageing Roman general Julius Caesar and the young pharaoh Cleopatra was one of Handel’s greatest triumphs within his lifetime and remains his most performed opera. That is not just down to the base material – one of the best-known historically attested love stories, which has been given treatments ranging from Shakespeare to Liz Taylor and Richard Burton and “Asterix und Cleopatra” – but also to a sophisticated libretto that provided the inspiration for a string of great arias and memorable character studies, for aside from the Roman-Egyptian pairing of Caesar and Cleopatra GIULIO CESARE IN EGITTO features another pair who are busy not with flirting but with the serious business of staying alive: Cornelia, the widow of Pompeius, a murdered rival of Caesar, and her son Sesto. Both have sought refuge in Egypt but have become pawns in the scheming between Cleopatra and her brother Tolomeo.

George Frideric Handel composed his Messiah, which tells the Christian story of salvation in three parts, between 1741 and 1742. Mozart's version was written for a performance in Vienna in 1789; he adapted Handel's composition to suit contemporary audiences' tastes, ensuring its greater success. He replaced the English text with a German translation and altered the instrumentation to better reflect contemporary sound ideals. He incorporated the latest developments in playing technique and instrument making, and employed the newly invented clarinets. Mozart left the composition untouched—a sign of his respect for the master from Halle/Saale.

Missy Mazzoli’s These Worlds in Us – a haunting orchestral work inspired by her father’s service in Vietnam – intertwines grief and resilience, merging vulnerability with militaristic energy. Symphony Nova Scotia welcomes Lionel Meunier, internationally renowned Artistic Director of the award-winning Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis. OSM Conductor Emeritus Kent Nagano leads a moving performance of Brahms’ A German Requiem, as it was presented in 1868 in Bremen, Germany. Making its debut at the OSM, this historic recreation includes excerpts from Baroque masterpieces such as Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Handel’s Messiah. As the MSO celebrates 100 years this season, it seemed only fitting to bring some of my MSO colleagues with me on stage to showcase their talent and our unique pairing. While the organ can be quite a loud instrument, it can also be used in a softer and more subtle way. With works like Handel’s G minor Organ Concerto and movements from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Coleridge-Taylor’s Nonet, this program will demonstrate the versatility and more intimate side of our instrument. I’m also excited that the audience will get a chance to hear many of the musicians they hear in the orchestra perform some works as soloists with the organ. As in all episodes of Ovid’s «Metamorphoses», a transformation also takes place here: After he is slain by his rival, the giant Polifemo, Acis is transformed into a gushing spring by his lover, the water nymph Galatea. The love triangle ignited the imagination of numerous artists – including the 23-year-old Händel. His Serenata is a charming miniature opera full of musical discoveries that the composer used in later works. Philippe Jaroussky, a world-famous countertenor, has additionally made a name for himself as a conductor, and for the first time here leads the Orchestra La Scintilla.

Seduction and intrigue: The romance between Cleopatra and Caesar during his conquest of Egypt is one of the most famous love affairs in the world. George Frideric Händel’s opera based on this story was a sensational success. The composer’s contemporaries declared it «beauty of all kinds in abundance». Even today, the magic of this music remains unbroken. In this Opéra de Monte-Carlo production, director Davide Livermore transfers the action to a luxurious cruise ship on the Nile. Cecilia Bartoli sings Cleopatra, one of her most thrilling roles.

This will be a dazzling performance on our very own queen of instruments! Our guest is the Spaniard Juan de la Rubia, organist at the famous Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona. He begins his multifaceted program with the magnificent overture to Handel's 1743 psychological drama "Samson." A superb example of French Renaissance music is Eustache du Caurroy's 1610 Fantasia on the then-popular and enchanting song "Une jeune fillette." Profound emotion stands alongside explosive outbursts in Bach's legendary Chaconne in D minor. Charles Tournemire never wrote down his choral improvisations, such as the one on the Easter sequence "Victimae Paschali Laudes"—they survive only because he recorded them as early as 1930. Jehan Alain, who died young in World War II, wrote impressive variations on a folk song by the 16th-century master Clément Janequin.

Our fourth classical concert is very special because we celebrate the return of Pepe Romero to Long Beach Symphony.

Pepe is a living legend who is not only one of the most wonderful musicians I have ever worked with, but also an incredible person who brings an irresistible humanity to the stage and to his music. I think it is that combination of incredible artistry and personality that makes his music-making so unique. I hope you can join us for this singular event. Pepe will perform the guitar concerto of all guitar concertos, the Concierto de Aranjuez by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo, a concerto that transports us to Spain. The first movement is infused with dance-like rhythms– but I really think that the crown jewel of this work is the truly magical second movement, the slow movement and its haunting melody for English horn. It is one of the most beautiful melodies ever composed.

A quirky comedy of oversized egos in a dysfunctional first family brought the 24-year-old Handel his breakthrough in the Italian opera scene, and thus in the world. Sparkling melodies and hair-raising turf wars made him "everybody's darling" in the "Las Vegas" of the 18th century – Venice was then Europe's number one entertainment capital. His nickname "Il caro Sassone – Our dear Saxon" came about with "Agrippina." “In every second without music, clapping and shouts of ‘Viva il caro Sassone – Long live the dear Saxon!’ and other expressions of applause, too exaggerated to quote here, shook the theater,” reported John Mainwaring. “Everyone was astonished by the grandeur and sublimity of his style, for until then no one here had heard anything remotely resembling such powerful harmonies and such dense modulations, combined in such a magical way.”

This concert is your chance to hear some of the most famous classical music ever written, live in Derby.

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter…. Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons depicts the passing of the year in evocative string music, from a barking dog in spring to an icy storm of winter. It takes a special violinist to bring it to life, and we have our own, Sophie Rosa, to perform it for you.

If that’s not enough Baroque’n’roll, we’ve also got Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 – with its second movement also known as the Air on a G String in a later adaptation. And for Baroque (coronation) anthems, we’re joined by Derby Cathedral Choir for music celebrating the coronation of King George II in 1727. Or, as you might know Handel’s Zadok The Priest, the music crowning Paris St Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester City as the official anthem of the UEFA Champions League.

Two magical garlands paint a story in Rameau’s La Guirlande—a mystical one-act opera telling a story of love through Baroque dances and irresistible arias. This concert includes another magical garland: Handel’s towering Dixit Dominus, which shows off a different side of the High Baroque style through complex counterpoint and startlingly dramatic choruses. We are thrilled to welcome Nicholas McGegan back to the podium to guide us through these baroque triumphs.
