The ensemble Sarahbanda , founded as part of the popular Mozart y Mambo project by Berlin Philharmonic member Sarah Willis, explores the fascinating Cuban dance rhythms in a completely new way by incorporating the French horn, which is not present in traditional Cuban music. Together with a group of Cuba's most talented musicians, the star horn player creates a completely new sound with exclusive arrangements of some of the best-known Cuban songs and original compositions by the band members – fresh, innovative, and irresistible!

For her Carnegie Hall recital debut, American soprano Lisette Oropesa performs a distinctive program of works by Cuban, French, and Italian composers. Carnegie Hall audiences will recognize Oropesa from recent performances with The Met Orchestra (as soloist in Brahms’s German Requiem and concert arias by Mozart). To hear her spectacular voice in the intimacy of Zankel Hall will be a special experience. She is joined by fellow Metropolitan Opera veteran Ken Noda, a renowned concert pianist and one of the finest vocal accompanists.

Orpheus and saxophonist Branford Marsalis have spent decades fine-tuning a connection that transcends stylistic labels. They revisit Ibert’s Concertino da Camera from their landmark 2001 album together, Creation, and bask in a close-knit arrangement of Debussy’s sultry Rhapsody. Veteran Orpheus orchestrators Javier Diaz and Jannina Norpoth make the ensemble shine in foreign escapades from two geniuses of genre-hopping: George Gershwin and Cuba’s Ernesto Lecuona. Antonio Garcia, a jazz composer and trombonist steeped in the same New Orleans currents that nourished the Marsalis family, stirs the American melting pot in a new work for Orpheus.

I am so excited to bring my childhood experience of listening to the music of my Cuban heritage while growing up in Miami to my home in Madison. This program will demonstrate the tremendous versatility of our Overture Concert Organ in a way that you all have not heard before. I contacted my childhood guitar teacher, Alvaro Bermudez, to help put together a band of some of the best classical and jazz musicians in Miami. Magela Herrera, flute, Alvaro Bermudez, guitar, Yarelis Gandul, percussion, and Alex Hernandez, bass, will join forces with me and our Mighty Klais to present a bilingual program of both classical and popular Latin-American music.
