Anne Akiko Meyers is one of the world’s most esteemed violinists, celebrated for her expressive depth and technical prowess. She has collaborated with today’s most important composers, conductors, and orchestras, creating a remarkable collection of new violin repertoire for future generations, including Arturo Márquez’s Fandango, a violin concerto written for her in 2021, which received a 2024 Grammy® Award nomination for her recording with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Ms. Meyers’ CAMA recital debut program will include a premiere of Philip Glass’s New Chaconne, as well as Márquez’s Danzón No.2 in a new arrangement by the composer. Anne Akiko Meyers will play the exquisite 1741 “ex-Vieuxtemps” Guarneri del Gesù, considered by many to be the finest sounding violin in existence for its powerfully luxuriant sound and mint state of preservation. Joining Anne Akiko Meyers is Italian pianist Fabio Bidini, a distinguished faculty member at the Colburn School in Los Angeles.

In this BIG year for your SCSO, we invite you to join us for our 15th Anniversary Gala, celebrating fifteen years of extraordinary music-making!  This powerful program features works by Tchaikovsky, Marquez, Marshall, along with a world premiere from SCSO favorite, Kevin Wilt.  The concert opens with Christopher Marshall’s Aue!, a work commissioned by the SCSO for our 10th Anniversary.  For three years, New Zealander Christopher Marshall lived in the idyllic surroundings of Samoa, and his piece conjures up its endlessly fascinating atmosphere and sounds, its hypnotic languor, and popular dances.  The SCSO’s commitment to new music is on full display when they present the world premiere of Kevin Wilt’s Imagined Adventures: March at the West River, a short and thrilling work based on childhood fantasies.  Composed in 2005, Marquez’s Conga del Fuego is a short fiery work bursting with color.  The program closes with a monumental masterwork and favorite of Aaron’s. From the staggering genius of Russia’s most famous Romantic comes a symphony charged with raw power and gorgeous melodies. With the foreboding opening theme of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, listeners are launched into a four-movement exploration of fate.  Selected youth musicians will perform side-by-side with their professional SCSO counterparts in this incredible program.

WMP’s electrifying season finale ‘Music of the Americas’ features a splendid array of music from North, Central and South America. Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón’s (currently based in Brooklyn, New York) work has been described as “wistfully idiosyncratic and contemplative". Her piece Tornasol (Spanish for sunflower) is a work that focuses on the vibrancy of color and how it changes through scientific experimentation, all portrayed in various sections of the orchestra. In contrast, guest artist Colin Davin will perform Concierto del Sur, a masterpiece for guitar and orchestra by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. The second half of the program includes music that is lively, rhythmic, and exciting. El Salón México by Aaron Copland depicts scenes and imagery from his experience at a popular dance hall in Mexico City. Four Dance Episodes from Alberto Ginastera’s ballet La Estancia incorporates Argentinian folk music that represent dance, character, and settings of life on the ranch. We conclude the program with Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez – a seductive, yet melancholy and irresistible ballroom dance inspired by the Cuban Habanera performed by full orchestra.

Carlos Miguel Prieto, celebrated as a rising star both domestically and abroad, was named 2019 Conductor of the Year by Musical America and is the foremost Mexican conductor of his generation. He serves as artistic director of México City’s Minería Symphony, which was founded in the 1970s and is widely regarded as the leading musical institution in México — one that regularly supports and programs Mexican composers. Housed at the Academia de Música del Palacio de Minería, the name honors the period from the 18th century when mining was one of the region’s most important economic activities.

Our 49th Season opens as a journey through art as expression, with works from literature and painting as the composers’ inspirational backdrop. Our gifted guest vocalist, bass-baritone Christopher Humbert Jr.,  will be on hand for two selections with literary origins. Living composer Eleanor Alberga’s romantic work for baritone and string orchestra, The Soul’s Expression (2017), is set to texts from three very different 19th century writers: George Eliot, Emily Brontë, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. And Maurice Ravel’s song cycle (his last composition) is based on the story of Cervantes’ epic novel Don Quixote. The concert opens with the familiar overture to Verdi’s opera “The Power of Destiny,” based on a Spanish drama, and closes with Modest Mussorgsky’s powerful masterpiece, Pictures at an Exhibition.

Music Director candidate Robert Moody, currently Music Director of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, leads this romping season-opening concert. Arturo Márquez’s Danzón is a vibrant and rhythmic orchestral piece that embodies the essence of Mexican dance and culture. With its infectious melodies and lively rhythms, it invites listeners to sway and embrace the joyous spirit of danzón. In contrast, Édouard Lalo’s Cello Concerto in D minor is a masterpiece of the Romantic era, characterized by its lyrical and passionate melodies performed here by Concert Artist Guild and Sphinx Competition first-prize winner Gabriel Martins. Finally, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is a testament to the composer’s genius, known for its relentless energy and rhythmic drive. Its second movement, the Allegretto, is particularly famous for its haunting beauty and emotional depth, making it one of Beethoven’s most iconic compositions.

Maestro Lawrence Golan helms the baton and the violin, conducting and performing a solo in Manuel Ponce’s magical Estrellita. Plus, we’re joined by the remarkable pianist and el alma de la fiesta Fabio Witkowski as we embark on a celebración that traverses the heart-pounding rhythms of Márquez’s Conga del Fuego Nuevo and the soul-stirring melodies of Rodríguez’s Mosaico Mexicano. By the end of the night, you’ll have a hard time resisting asking the person next to you, “¿Quieres bailar?”

Violin virtuoso Anne Akiko Meyers returns to us with a new commission from preeminent Mexican composer Arturo Marquez. Her request for a concerto based on Mariachi traditions reflected his father’s heritage, and so was born the fiery, soulful Fandango. Last summer’s premiere electrified the audience; Meyers calls it simply ‘a blockbuster.’ Bracketing it with Finzi’s lyrical Prelude and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, we offer a treat for Spring.
