We invite you to travel to Latin America with music! The Lithuanian Symphony Wind Orchestra Chamber Ensemble presents a program specially prepared for this concert, “Latin Wind”, which will take you to the colorful and passionate rhythms of Latin America. At the concert, you will hear works by famous, but less frequently performed in our concert halls, composers from Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina for wind ensembles of various compositions, covering a wide range of styles – from the energetic dance music intonations of Arturo Márquez and Aldemar Romero to the mystically colorful “Quarteto simbólico” by Villa-Lobos or the pieces of Silvestre Revueltas created in the spirit of modernism.

Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, written during his time in the US, draws on the character of American musical traditions, charting a path for later composers. The concert also looks elsewhere in the New World, with works from Mexico and Argentina that similarly incorporate national styles: Arturo Márquez’s trumpet concerto with virtuoso Pacho Flores and Alberto Ginastera’s dance-like variations.

MSO First Associate Concertmaster Ilana Setapen commands the stage with Arturo Márquez’s folk-infused violin concerto Fandango. “I had known this music since I was a child,” says Márquez, “listening to it in the cinema, on the radio, and listening to my father, a mariachi violinist (Arturo Márquez, Sr.) interpret huastecos and mariachi music.” Márquez says Fandango adheres to his “seven capital principles: tonality, modality, melody, rhythm, imaginary folk tradition, harmony, and orchestral color.” Guest conductor Asher Fisch leads this vivid program, which concludes with two Spain-inspired pieces by Ravel, as well as Turina’s Danzas fantásticas; Turina’s trio of evocative dances are set in the Aragon, Basque, and Andalusian regions of Spain.

Founded in 2007, this Brazilian initiative's Orchestra of Excellence has made a name for itself internationally as part of a major government programme to expose young people in South America to music and culture. The Youth Orchestra has already given more than 300 concerts around the world, and in April it will add another prestigious venue to its list of venues: the Alte Oper. The opening concert of the Youth Orchestra Festival is dedicated to the young musicians of Neojiba - around 100 talented musicians aged between 13 and 27. With the drive of George Gershwin's 'Cuban Overture' and their own energy, they set the mood for the evening and for a festival in which the next generation is leading and playing. The same was true of the Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest concert that followed. The Dutch collective sees itself as a big band for - so much Dutch is obvious - 'aanstormende supertalenten' up to the age of 26. Led by guitarist and composer Reinier Baas, the NJJO plays a repertoire of arrangements of pieces that have inspired the band members, and the young talents are always invited to write for the band. The result is a very coherent programme, despite the many influences, with music ranging from avant-garde to danceable grooves.

Five-time GRAMMY Award-winning Nicaraguan conductor Giancarlo Guerrero leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in a south-of-the-border immersion, packing plenty of heat into a fusion of Afro-Caribbean, Central and South American traditions, including the tango-infused Sinfonía Buenos Aires. The renowned Venezuelan soloist Pacho Flores dips into Mexico's rich trumpet-playing tradition for a piece written by him and for him by Arturo Márquez.

Clemens Schuldt invites us to come in jeans to this concert without musical boundaries, where classical music opens up to other styles and is aimed at everyone! As a preamble, Brahms transcends the academic argument of his Overture Op. 80 , intended for the anniversary of the University of Heidelberg, to draw us into a romantic universe where rejoicing and lyricism coexist. The German virtuoso cellist, Julian Steckel, radically changes tone with the electrifying Concerto by Friedrich Gulda, a "rock concerto" composed in the "Seventies" at the request of Rostropovich.

Nearly every musician can point to a teacher who inspired them to keep going and follow their dream. The Salt Lake Symphony is pleased to continue our tradition of inviting talented high school musicians to play alongside us for a piece every year. Young musicians come from a variety of places, including area youth orchestras, high schools, and private studios. This year, we welcome the students to play Danzon No. 2, an exciting work by Mexican composer, Arturo Marquez. Also on the program is a unique first for the SLS, a Concerto for Contrabassoon and Orchestra by Victor Bruns. We are thrilled to have Utah Symphony contrabassoonist, Leon Chodos, joining us as soloist. Leon is a great supporter of our orcheatra and can sometimes be seen volunteering his talents in our bassoon section. The concert will close with a powerful “first symphony”, a student composition by the great Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich. The Symphony No. 1 was Shostakovich’s graduation piece from his conservatory studies, launching him into instant fame as a Russian symphonist at age 19.

“A rising star” – San Francisco Classical Voice, Ava Pakiam is a fifteen-year-old violinist studying at the Pre College of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Ava was admitted into the Pre College program at age seven and is currently a student of Simon James. Ava made her solo debut at eight years old in California with the Fremont Symphony. Later that summer, she performed Vivaldi’s Winter Concerto with the Sempre Musik Orchestra and the New York Sinfonietta in Boston and New York City, making her solo debut at Carnegie Hall. In the Fall of 2021, Ava competed at age eleven in the Seattle Young Artists Auditions. Ava was named the Seattle Symphony Young Artist for the 2021-2022 season and performed as soloist with the Seattle Symphony playing Saint-Saëns Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. Last season, Ava performed the Brahms, Bruch and Tchaikovsky concerti on both coasts as well as a solo tour with orchestras in Mexico and Honduras. She performs on an 1874 J.B. Vuillaume violin.

Marin Alsop conducts ‘Mexico’s second national anthem’ and an exciting new cello concerto by the Philharmonia’s Featured Composer Gabriela Ortiz.  

Ortiz’s concerto, written for tonight’s soloist Alisa Weilerstein, is inspired by the caves and underground rivers of the Yucatán peninsula (Dzonot in Mayan, and Cenotes in Spanish). The Desert Community Orchestra will perform Nations, Narratives, and Cultures concert at Burrough High School Parker Performing Arts Center. The concert will present powerful musical voices of Europe and the Americas, highlighting nation-building and cultural identity through iconic orchestral works. Featured is Schubert’s Symphony in B minor, The Unfinished Symphony, Danzón No. 2 by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, a celebrated symbol of Mexican music and culture. Sibelius’s Finlandia, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, and Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5.

Andrew Loveland, from Los Angeles California, will be conducting. He is a Guatemalan-American cellist and conductor from Los Angeles, CA. With over ten years of performing and teaching experience, Mr. Loveland brings a unique experience to his interpretations and performances on the podium.

The concert itself flows with the charm and energy of a night on the town. Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz brings smoldering passion and drama, while Strauss’s Voices of Spring waltz enchants with its elegance—performed live with dancers from Downriver Dance Academy, under the artistic direction of Genrich. Later, tango-inspired rhythms and Latin flair take center stage in Piazzolla’s Libertango, performed in collaboration with the Dearborn Youth Symphony, adding a fresh, youthful spark to the evening.

The Göppingen Youth Symphony Orchestra is one of the ensembles offered by the Göppingen Municipal Youth Music School. It has won prizes in numerous competitions and is regularly invited to take part in international festivals. At the IX New York International Music Festival in Carnegie Hall, the Göppingen Youth Orchestra was awarded the gold medal. The ensemble has been featured on radio and television on numerous occasions. The conductor has been Martin Gunkel, City Music Director since 1989. The ensemble aims to promote children and young people's musical development and offer them the opportunity to play sophisticated orchestral music through the development of traditional and modern orchestral works. Furthermore, national prizewinners of the "Jugend musiziert" competition are given the opportunity to perform as soloists in concerts. Concert tours and international youth exchanges have taken the Göppingen Youth Symphony Orchestra to Spain, France, Norway, Hungary, Austria, Italy, Latvia, Great Britain, and the USA on numerous occasions.

The Fiato Quartet, winner of the 2022 Beverly Hills National Auditions, was formed in 2008. Its members are Carrie Kennedy and Joel Pargman, violins, Aaron Oltman, viola and Ryan Sweeney, cello. They hold degrees in music performance from the USC, Rice University, Northwestern University, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. They each have active concert careers throughout Southern California as members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Pasadena Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, New West Symphony, and Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra. As studio musicians in Los Angeles, they record for motion pictures, television and records.

Yet Anne Akiko Meyers, for whom the work was written, soared through this jungle, her 1741 Guarneri del Gesù violin jumping, bouncing, playing the frequent high registers with operatic facility” (ConcertoNet.com). Summer, energy, passion – Gustavo Dudamel and the Berliner Philharmoniker invite you to a end-of-season concert at the Waldbühne. The Venezuelan conductor performed at this venue back in 2008 under the motto Los ritmos de la noche. It was his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker, and was met with great acclaim by the audience. Dudamel now celebrates the end of the season with the orchestra in the open air for the fourth time. The programme will include rousing dances from Bernstein’s musical West Side Story, in which Latin American sounds and rhythms are all-pervasive.

Our season closes with a concert of music celebrating and honoring our homes.

This concert features two pieces written for the Aurora Symphony, including a musical depiction of our city and a touching musical memorial in response to the July 20th theater shooting.

Students from the local high school band programs will join members of our Knox-Galesburg Symphony for a weekend of music-making and collaboration. This unique opportunity allows students to learn from and play alongside our principal musicians, fostering a supportive environment for music education. The performance will celebrate the annual Music in our Schools Month, hosted by the National Association for Music Education.

This event offers a rare opportunity to witness the Phoenix Symphony during their working, open rehearsals.
