Is there a deeper dimension? Daniel Huppert and the Bergischen Symphoniker explore this question musically. With floating sounds, Charles Ives poses the "eternal question of existence" in "The Unanswered Question." In his Symphony "Mathis der Maler," Paul Hindemith immersed himself in the history of the Isenheim Altarpiece and its painter Matthias Grünewald, and addressed explosive themes: solidarity with the persecuted, aiding refugees, civil courage, violence, and self-doubt. A German artist as hero who gives up his art to stand in solidarity with the peasants' fight for freedom: this message was bound to land as a political statement in 1933. Anton Bruckner's "Te Deum" is regarded as one of the most important large-scale choral works of its era and one of the most significant works of sacred music overall, not least because of its extraordinary spiritual depth and musical complexity. The musical hymn of praise, stretching from Gregorian chant well beyond Bruckner's own time, is performed here with four soloists and the choir of the Bergischen Symphoniker.
