In 2025, the "Waltz King" Johann Strauss II would have celebrated his 200th birthday – and this, of course, deserves a fitting celebration outside of his native Vienna. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra is dedicating its New Year's Eve and New Year's Day concerts to the man of seemingly inexhaustible creativity. Pia Amofa-Antwi (known from "Pia and the Wild Nature") sets out on a special mission and ends up in Christmas-time Vienna 200 years ago, the home of composer and conductor Johann Strauss. He was a true pop star in his day. He composed waltzes, mazurkas, and polkas like an assembly line. Waltzes and waffles – that's how you get through the Christmas season in Vienna. And, of course, Christmas carols are part of it! That's when Pia needs some backup: a hearty sing-along is the order of the day!

Vienna, its life, its work. Let us recognize, on the occasion of the bicentenary of his birth, that Johann Strauss Jr. alone encapsulates the spirit of the city. His younger brother, Josef, does the same in his own way, whose polka-mazurka, The Dragonfly, confirms what a genius he would have been had he renounced his first profession. After the trumpets and Magyar arches of Von Suppé's very brassy Light Cavalry , Korngold's Violin Concerto conjures up the disenchanted Vienna of Yesterday's World. Two cities, two atmospheres.

It has an inherent majestic strength: Camille Saint-Saëns' 3rd Symphony, composed in 1886 - one of the first non-sacred organ works for orchestra. With Saint-Saëns' powerful sounds, the Philharmonie Salzburg will first make the Stadtkirche Hallein tremble on this evening, before paying homage to Johann Strauss on his 200th birthday in the second part of the concert, together with the lower school choir of the Musisches Gymnasium Salzburg.

After two musical bicycle tours, the journey isn't over yet: The French chamber orchestra Les Forces Majeures hops from their bikes onto the stage and rounds off their visit to our region with a concert in Bietigheim. The musicians also continue the themes of travel and mobility dramaturgically, selecting suitable works by mostly French composers: With Poulenc, we travel by train and on foot; with Haydn, Debussy, and Ravel, we continue on a boat; Schumann whisks us away into the forest; and Josef Strauss dances a bicycle polka with us. Whether on foot, at sea, or on wheels: Les Forces Majeures are bustling and inspire a spirit of mobilization and departure—literally and figuratively.

A new and wonderful combination of orchestra and conductor leaves its calling card: the Wiener Symphoniker, or Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and Petr Popelka. The Czech musician – who, incidentally, was associate principal double bass of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden until 2020 – is considered a shooting star on the conductor’s podium. Together, they offer audience favorites: after beginning with Beethoven, the Viennese orchestra and its chief delve into romantic sound worlds. Korngold’s Violin Concerto, as virtuosic as it is mellifluous, is in great hands with the French star violinist Renaud Capuçon.

The Santa Monica Symphony proudly presents an evening of diverse and captivating music led by guest conductor Pola Benke. Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture opens the concert with a sweeping seascape of emotional depth. Dmitry Kabalevsky’s Cello Concerto No. 1 follows, contrasting energetic vitality with soulful introspection. Josef Strauss’ enchanting Sphärenklänge Waltz enchants with its celestial elegance. The concert concludes with Joseph Haydn’s delightful Symphony No. 94, Surprise, filled with wit, charm, and Haydn’s flair for the unexpected.

Spring Concert: An Eclectic Night

With its extreme contrasts, ranging from dramatic climaxes to tender, poetic moments, Franz Liszt's 2nd Piano Concerto is a virtuoso and interpretative challenge for soloists. The French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, known for his brilliant playing and the emotional depth of his interpretations, takes on the solo part. The piano concerto is framed by Strauss twice. Josef Strauss composed his "Dynamiden Waltz" in 1865 for the Industrialists' Ball in the Redoutensaal of the Vienna Hofburg, venturing into compositional realms that are not usually touched upon by dance music. No wonder Richard Strauss plagiarized this waltz gem for his "Rosenkavalier". The famous waltz melody is of course not missing from the "Rosenkavalier Suite", which Philippe Jordan recomposed. The selected key musical passages of the opera allow the audience to experience the plot in a concentrated form and bring the famous arias of the Marschallin, Octavian and Baron von »Ochs« to life, even when there are no singers on stage.

Waltzes, polkas, blissful operetta charm, sparkling like the sound of champagne: this is what the Viennese masters from the great Strauss family stand for, as does Franz Lehár. Atmospheric opera moments by contemporary Giacomo Puccini introduce the gala before the imaginary curtain rises to forays into operetta classics such as "The Merry Widow," "Giuditta," and "The Bat." Waltzes and lively polkas provide the furious finale. The star guest is the Polish soprano Magdalena Lucjan, who studied in Vienna and thus brings the flair of the Danube metropolis directly to the Rhine.

Korngold composed "The Snowman" when he was just 11 years old and was described as a musical prodigy by Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss, among others. The orchestration was carried out by his teacher Alexander von Zemlinsky.

This year, too, the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana invites its audiences on a fascinating journey into the heart of Viennese musical culture between the 19th and 20th centuries. The opening performance features the overture to Johann Strauss Jr.'s three-act operetta, Der Zigeunerbaron ( The Gypsy Baron ), based on a text by Ignaz Schnitzer, which premiered to great acclaim on October 24, 1885, at the Theater an der Wien. The overture, which previews the operetta's main themes, is notable for its orchestration, which vividly evokes Hungarian exoticism, alternating proud gypsy rhythms with seductive waltz movements. Composed in 1902 at the behest of Princess Pauline von Metternich for a sumptuous masked ball, the waltz Gold und Silber, Op. 79 ( Gold and Silver ) by Franz Lehár stands out for its perfectly balanced thematic writing and a series of emotional contrasts, while the triangle gives a “silvery” touch. The polka repertoire was inaugurated by Im Krapfenwald'l op. 336 ( In the Krapfen Forest , 1869) by Johann Strauss Jr., which recreates the bucolic atmosphere of the Viennese woods by introducing toy instruments that perfectly imitate the calls of birds, among which the obstinate and humorous call of the cuckoo stands out. His younger brother Eduard composed the popular Ohne Bremse ( Without Brakes ), a fast polka Op. 238 , composed in 1874, which is notable for its pressing rhythm that evokes, precisely, a mad race without brakes.

Franz Welser-Möst’s final concert as Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra is a lively homage to the Viennese musical tradition so near and dear to his heart. The evening opens with Schubert’s pastoral Overture to Rosamunde, followed by a series of spirited dances and overtures by Lanner and the Strauss family. At the center of this swirling soirée, the world premiere of Stephan Koncz’s Czardas celebrates the signature flexibility of The Cleveland Orchestra under Welser-Möst’s baton — a fittingly festive farewell.
