The tempestuous minor key sensibility of Haydn’s Symphony No. 39 (1765) buzzes with the energy of the ‘sturm und drang’ (storm and stress) movement sweeping literature and art at the time. In the Keyboard Concerto No. 11, from nearly 20 years later, we hear the influence of Mozart on Haydn in the enterprise of the writing for the solo instrument and the famous ‘Rondo all’Ungarese’ finale.

In 1852, Robert Schumann composed the Missa sacra for church services – a work that expresses not a denominational but a universal religious sentiment. The motet "Do Not Despair," initially described by Schumann as a "religious hymn," was first performed on July 4, 1850, for a secular occasion – the 25th anniversary of the St. Pauli University Choir in Leipzig. Haydn's Fifth London Symphony demonstrates the composer's independence from courtly taste and circumstances: He presents this work with pathos, earnestness, passion – and, unusually, in a minor key – thus forging a programmatic link back to Schumann.

Concertmaster Maria Arrua and Music Director Stephen Alltop will team up in a fabulous and rarely heard concerto for Violin and Harpsichord by Joseph Haydn. Barbara Hannigan returns to Berwaldhallen to perform the Iranian composer Golfam Khayam’s work I’m not a Tale to be Told together with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Next follows Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, also known as the ‘Trauersinphonie,’ one of the composer’s most famous works. Dmitri Shostakovich's son Maxim described the 15th and final symphony of his father, who died 50 years ago and to whom the music world will dedicate a commemorative year in 2025, as an autobiography from birth to death . Announced as a joyful symphony, Shostakovich composed a complex composition a few years before his death: serious, but also ironic, which, as it were, reflects on his eventful life. He uses quotations from himself and from some of his colleagues, including Gioachino Rossini, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Gustav Mahler.

Trio Azura was founded in 2022 at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. The ensemble consists of Canadian violinist Duncan McDougall, South Korean cellist Yejin Hong, and Chinese pianist Yanfeng (Tony) Bai. They are the Ensemble in Residence at Colburn, studying under faculty members Jonathan Brown, Fabio Bidini, Martin Beaver, and Clive Greensmith. The Trio won the Grand Prize and Gold Medal at the 51st Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In addition, they received the Lift Every Voice Prize for the best performance of a work by an underrepresented composer, as well as the Horszowski Trio Prize. They are also prize winners at the Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin, China.

Back by popular demand, the Modigliani Quartet is recognized as one of today’s most sought-after quartets, featuring regularly in prominent international series and on the world’s most prestigious stages.

Joseph Haydn shows his entertaining side in the best sense of the word in his famous Trio in G major, which he composed in London in 1795. Haydn had been Kapellmeister at the court of the Esterházy family for almost thirty years. There he also became acquainted with original Hungarian dance music, which he presented to the delighted London audience in the last movement of the trio, the Rondo all’Ongarese. Zoltán Kodály had a completely different view of Hungarian folk music. He did not look for the temperamental element in it, but rather - like his colleague Béla Bartók - discovered a “Hungarian style“ on his research trips, “free of any sentimentality” and “superfluous ornamentation”. This is exactly what Kodály adopted in his second string quartet, which he composed between 1916 and 1918: a work of great seriousness and almost archaic power. In his Piano Quartet No. 1, on the other hand, Johannes Brahms indulges in Hungarian folklore, which the Hamburg-born composer also revived in his Hungarian Dances. In the final Rondo alla Zingarese of his quartet, Brahms sets sparks flying.

Masterworks 2 offers an evening of music, written purely for the enjoyment of beauty, juxtaposed with Haydn’s (originally titled) Mass for Troubled Times. Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans presents a pastoral of the natural world including lyrical melodies as well as tempestuous scenes. The second of Brahms’ two serenades is truly music for music’s sake—a tuneful stroll in the concert hall. Paired with these two works, The Lord Nelson Mass was written for the name day of Princess Esterházy, the wife of Haydn’s patron. The Mass honors Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over Napoleon at Aboukir, just off the coast of North Africa at Alexandria in 1798.

The second subscription concert of the Orchestral Series will combine the latest music with works by masters of earlier periods. Oscar Jockel will perform the demanding, but historically traditional dual role of composer-conductor.

Despite his young age, he has managed to captivate audiences, critics, as well as the world’s leading conductors. He has been conducting assistant to Kirill Petrenko, the Chief Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, and demonstrated his professional qualities with the Prague Philharmonia in the past.

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

The Viennese have the waltz * On the Beautiful Blue Danube* , the Praguers have the tone poem *The Moldau* , and the New Yorkers have the musical *West Side Story* . But we Nurembergers have Richard Wagner's opera * The Mastersingers of Nuremberg * as the "music of our city" – the greatest tribute to the Franconian metropolis ever composed. The prelude to Act 1, relatively short in duration but monumental in its impact, is a veritable symphonic poem that encompasses all of the opera's central plot motifs. Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 3, dedicated to Wagner in its original version, is monumental in every respect. Between these two monuments of late Romanticism is a famous masterpiece of early Classical music: Haydn's virtuoso C major concerto featuring the young Japanese rising star of the cello world, Michiaki Ueno. The renowned Jerusalem Quartet opens our season with a masterful program spanning three centuries of string quartet repertoire. The concert features Haydn’s Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 76, No. 4, Shostakovich’s deeply expressive Quartet No. 7 in F-Sharp Minor, Op. 108, and Beethoven’s monumental Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 130, culminating in the powerful Grosse Fuge, Op. 133.

A colorful French accent permeates this program by Italian conductor Riccardo Minasi: Maurice Ravel's famous "Tombeau de Couperin" is a reminiscence of the composer's 150th birthday, and Claude Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" – originally a piece for Vaslav Nijinsky's scandalous ballet of the same name – is considered a milestone of musical impressionism. Before that, however, Riccardo Minarsi and the MDR Symphony Orchestra delve into the sound world of Joseph Haydn, whose imaginative musical thinking ventured into new compositional realms in the genre of opera, but especially in symphonic music.

Violinist Alina Ibragimova leads us from grief and fear to radiant joy in her deeply emotional concert with the SCO. Ibragimova is among today’s most compelling, perceptive soloists, combining a penetrating musical intellect with gripping, passionate playing – qualities very much on display in her intensely expressive programme.
