Jeremy Denk, celebrated not only for his unparalleled musicality but also as a New York Times bestselling author and a recipient of the prestigious MacArthur "Genius" Grant, will take the stage both as a soloist and conductor. The highlight of the evening will be Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 in C Major, K. 503, a masterpiece that showcases the depth and breadth of Mozart's musical genius.

"The secret of great composers, especially Schubert, is their ability to let the essence of their soul resonate," once described by honorary conductor Philippe Herreweghe. In the Sixth Symphony, experience the playfulness and vitality characteristic of the composer's early years. Schubert's Eighth Symphony, however, presents a different mood, with melancholy and charming themes interchanging. Despite being composed just five years later, he viewed life from a vastly different perspective. The symphony remained unfinished, but its majestic introduction and lyrical Andante stand among the most poignant melodies in music history. Young and old. For the orchestra academies in Schwetzingen, the SWR Symphony Orchestra looks for special conductors for special repertoire. In this case, the special conductor is Matthew Halls: a young British specialist in early music who has also made a career as a harpsichordist. The orchestra approaches the special repertoire in reverse gear. Schwetzingen's resident artist Raphaela Gromes is the soloist in Joseph Haydn's second cello concerto - a virtuoso challenge, because the composer dedicated his work in 1783 to Antonín Kraft, who was considered the world's best cellist at the time. Since Haydn copied the "singing allegro" from Mozart, the combination with his 33rd symphony is a good fit. Then Jean-Philippe Rameau's Pigmalion ballet suite lets us participate in the creation of art: Already in the overture we hear the hammer of the sculptor Pygmalion, who then falls hopelessly in love with his own statue. It is quite possible that something similar will happen to the audience while listening to Rameau's seductive sounds...

Joseph Haydn lived in a dazzling era: together with Mozart and Beethoven, he ushered in the musical era of Viennese Classicism and is considered the founder of the classical symphony. His 77 years were filled with creative vitality and a passion for musical experimentation. Haydn spent most of his career in the service of the highly cultured and very wealthy Hungarian princely family Esterházy. At the family's three ancestral seats, Haydn was responsible both as a composer and as a performing musician for the direction of the permanent orchestra, for chamber music soirées and the summer opera, which also included the re-arranging and composing of operas. He had to deliver a huge number of commissioned works for events that followed one another almost seamlessly, but this did not depress him at all; on the contrary, it fired him up and, as numerous sources prove, filled him with happiness.

In 2023, Marlboro Music welcomed Helmut Lachenmann as its Composer in Residence, a rare U.S. visit for this German composer who has shaped contemporary music worldwide. During his time in Vermont, Lachenmann worked closely with the musicians on Got Lost, a uniquely adventurous work for soprano and piano that challenges the physical and mental expectations of the performers. A journey through the development of the string quartet, starting with Joseph Haydn, who, through his further development, elevated the genre to the "premier class of chamber music". Maurice Ravel's only string quartet pleased Claude Debussy so much that he advised him not to change a single note. Dmitri Shostakovich, on the other hand, did not meet the expectations of his contemporaries with his 3rd string quartet. In 1946,people expected a heroic victory composition, but what came out was a cheerful work. Of course, with the ambiguity that is so often inherent in his music.

Haydn's composition is characterised by a dramatic, extremely moving emotionality that is hard to resist. It was initially conceived as a purely instrumental composition - meditation music in seven slow movements with a prelude and final movement („Il Terremoto“ - the earthquake) for a Passion service. However, when Haydn heard an arrangement of his work with a German text in Passau in 1794, he was inspired to write his own vocal version. The premiere took place in Vienna in 1796. With the flourishing of choral societies in the 19th century, this vocal version of the Seven Words became one of the most frequently performed pieces of Passion music ever.

The common prejudice that Haydn and Mozart had little sympathy for the transverse flute is amply refuted by their music. It is true, however, that the flute was considered an instrument for domestic use and the corresponding literature was rather modest. Haydn's and Mozart's flute quartets, on the other hand, despite all their melodic charm, always meet the requirements of sophisticated chamber music. Mozart wrote his C major work on behalf of a Dutch doctor in Mannheim, while Haydn's D major quartet was probably written for the Esterházy court. The concert is rounded off with two colorful chamber music works from the beginning of the 20th century: a flute quartet by the Swiss Volkmar Andreae and the first movement of the string trio by the French composer Jean Cras.

Brian Raphael Nabors’ Pulse is an episodic rhapsody that explores several phases and colorful variants of rhythm. The Chineke! Orchestra, whose motto is “championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music,” is one of Britain’s most exciting new orchestras. It was founded in London in 2015 by double bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku CBE to provide career opportunities at the highest level for Black and ethnically diverse classical musicians in the UK and Europe. They are currently a Resident Orchestra at London’s Southbank Centre, and their 2023 BBC Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall featured musicians from 40 different countries. They have performed to great critical acclaim at leading European festivals such as the Lucerne and Edinburgh Festivals, as well as in the US and Canada. Zimbabwean-born conductor Vimbayi Kaziboni, Assistant Professor of Orchestral Studies and Contemporary Music at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, is widely sought after by top orchestras around the globe for his depth of approach, interpretive imagination, and expressivity. For its Santa Barbara debut, the Chineke! Orchestra presents an evening of compelling works by Black composers, and Franz Joseph Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat featuring Aaron Azunda Akugbo, a founding member of Connaught Brass.

With two collections of songs composed by George Butterworth and Gerald Finzi, we move into a British landscape with hedges, rolling hills and small idyllic villages. Butterworth composed “Love Blows as the Wind Blows” with strong inspiration from English folk music, and Finzi sets “Let us Galands Bring” to music for texts by William Shakespeare, which are about death and love and everything in between.

Haydn's symphony no. 45 is humorous total theatre, where the musicians leave the stage individually during the course. Stage presence, on the other hand, is required in Schumann's romantic symphony no. 2 on an evening when solo hornist Emilie Ravn Jensen premieres Eva Noer Korndrup's horn concerto composed especially for the Copenhagen Phil.

Rainer Honeck offers a full evening with Haydn, not only as a conductor, but also as a violin soloist. The composer's second violin concerto opens the evening. Then the mood shifts to Symphony No. 45, where the movements paint an emotional tableau. The final movement of the farewell symphony , where the musicians gradually leave the stage, creates an intense feeling of longing.

During the 17th century, the term "Symphony" or "Sinfonia" was usually applied to the opening music for operas, oratorios and cantatas. But gradually, during the 18th century, the symphony developed to become the most important format for independent orchestral music. The formal proportions were dramatically expanded and the instrumentation refined and expanded, paving the way for the genre's dominant status in the Romantic period with composers such as Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler.

German pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati has earned a formidable reputation for her stellar Bach performances. Her international breakthrough came in 2014 as an award winner at the International Bach Competition in Leipzig and particularly through her increasing musical collaboration with Sir András Schiff who praised the "astonishing clarity, purity, and maturity" as well as the musical comprehension associated with it when she plays Bach.

The Leonkoro Quartet, founded in Berlin in 2019, is framed by brothers Jonathan and Lukas Schwarz on first violin and cello, while the middle voices are formed by Amelie Wallner on second violin and Mayu Konoe on viola. In Esperanto, Leonkoro means Lionheart, alluding to a children’s book about two brothers, a book that juxtaposes the grave reality of death with a large and heartfelt yearning for comfort and solace – a sentiment that string quartet repertoire addresses in several instances.
