A Farewell to London

The Isidore String Quartet takes its name from Isidore Cohen, longtime member of the Beaux Arts Trio and the Juilliard Quartet. Cohen remains an icon of the American chamber music world and a pillar of New York's Juilliard School, where the members of the Isidore Quartet studied and came together as an ensemble inspired by the example of the Juilliard Quartet. Founded in 2019, the quartet used the time without a performance due to the coronavirus to work intensively on its ensemble sound and was rewarded with the first prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the most important chamber music competition on the American continent. Since then, the quartet's career has gone from strength to strength, and it is now the leading young ensemble in the USA, as well as touring Europe every year. For their Frankfurt concert, the 'Isidores' are bringing a brand new quartet by jazz pianist Billy Childs, which will receive its German premiere here, and Antonín Dvořák's great Symphonic G Major Quartet.

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is the centerpiece of the final classical concert of the 25-26 season, a symphony that is universally known and truly knows no boundaries. We will open with an exciting new work by American composer Shawn Okpebholo, Stellar Fanfare Prelude for Orchestra, written in 2024 for the Chicago Symphony. We are proud to welcome the young American cellist Sterling Elliott, a 2021 Avery Fisher Grant recipient and winner of the Senior Division of the 2019 National Sphinx Competition.

It was perhaps the first oratorio concert and also the first classical open-air concert in post-war Germany. Almost a year before their official founding, on July 29, 1945, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, under the name Konzertgesellschaft, performed Haydn's oratorio The Creation with the Nuremberg Teachers' Choir (LGV) in the ruins of St. Sebaldus Church, which was missing its roof and spires. The vocal soloists came from the opera house, and the conductor was Karl Demmer, then head of the LGV. It was like a dawn from darkness into light. In commemoration of this legendary event, The Creation is on the program of our double concert in March 2026. Also performing: a top-class solo ensemble and the Nuremberg Concert Choirs. Chief Conductor Jonathan Darlington will be conducting.

One work, one story: that has been the recipe for most of the concerts in our successful Pur series over the past few seasons. Some of the most beautiful musical stories can be told around the symphonies of the unique Joseph Haydn. His Symphony No. 101 (Yes, "Papa Haydn" really did write over 100 symphonies – his student Ludwig could have taken a leaf out of his book!) is a musical marvel that still amazes and makes us smile today, a work with which the composer continues to touch us like few other composers of his time can! The nickname " The Clock" , like most of the titles of Haydn's  symphonies and string quartets, does not come from the master, but was added to the composition by an enterprising publisher.

Featuring the international award-winning Trio Bohémo, this concert will be a rare occasion to hear both composers and performers from the Czech lands. Dvořak’s famous “Dumky” Piano Trio is at the heart of their program, where melancholy and joy are felt in quick succession. In “Moravian Folk Songs”, the performers’ own voices will join the colours of their instruments with traditional melodies from the artists’ homeland by Czech composer Jan Vičar. Although it was actually just a joke by a lovesick amateur astronomer to marry the daughter of a curious older man. He was fooled anyway, and the opera ends happily, of course. Who knew Haydn and hot cross buns might be related? “The Father of the Symphony”, Haydn’s staggering 104 symphonies are a legacy of brilliance. His final work, Symphony No. 104, known as The London Symphony, first dazzled audiences in 1795. Some have linked its finale to London street tunes, but its melodic roots lie in Haydn’s Austro-Croatian heritage, not the bakery aisle. We then descend into darker corners with Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, known as his ‘Unfinished Symphony’, with only two movements, this piece takes the listener on an emotional journey that feels altogether complete.

Winner of Third Prize and the Roslyn Lyons Bronze Medal at the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition, Khanh Nhi Luong captivated audiences with her profoundly musical performances of a wide range of repertoire, including Ludwig van Beethoven, Henri Dutilleux and Gabriel Fauré, culminating in a brilliant performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s third piano concerto. To close the 2025/26 International Piano Series, she performs music by Joseph Haydn, Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert, plus the rarely heard second piano sonata by Polish composer, Grażyna Bacewicz.

“There is no finer ensemble in the world, expressively and technically,” than the Takács Quartet (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). Formed in Budapest in 1975, this peerless ensemble returns to Philadelphia to perform a new work by Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad, as well as Haydn’s charming Rider Quartet and Beethoven’s profound and groundbreaking Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131—which he considered his favorite achievement in the genre.

Cello extraordinaire and artist-in-residence Maximilian Hornung is performing as a soloist for the Chamber Music series at the opera house, where he will present two cello concertos. After the technically demanding, classic C Major Concerto by Haydn, he will perform an exciting new work by Georgian composer Vaja Azarashvili. The latter is particularly close to Hornung’s heart. The popular octet by Mendelssohn will serve as the energetic finale.

This promises to be a delightful theatrical experience: Giovanni Antonini, as conductor and director, guides us through an original program brimming with powerful emotions and dramatic surprises. In the first part, we embark on a journey through the enchanting world of Italian music, which in the 18th and 19th centuries revolved almost exclusively around opera. Many composers explored this genre, and we present wonderful arias penned by the then-leading bel canto masters Rossini, Bellini, and Paisiello – and welcome the acclaimed artist Julia Lezhneva to sing the often rapid coloratura passages.

Our principal trumpeter, James Sims, will demonstrate the instrument’s unique quality in the short but challenging Concerto in E-flat by Franz Joseph Haydn.   Under the leadership of guest conductor Johannes Debus, the ETSO also brings life to Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony and the second overture of Louise Farrenc.  Concluding the concert is one of the most famous classical works in history: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

Performed at the BBC Proms in 2022 by percussionist Colin Currie, Nicole Lizée’s concerto for percussion and orchestra, Blurr is the Colour of My True Love’s Eyes, is a tour-de-force inspired by techniques found in stop-motion film and photography.

Conductor Manfred Honeck presents his theatrical interpretation of Mozart’s magisterial swan song, literally composed on his deathbed. Honeck’s illuminating selection of dramatic readings, choral interpolations, and other enhancements bring new insights to the score. Also on the program is Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 93, written during the composer’s triumphant late-career stay in London. Haydn had never traveled outside his native Austria, but he took to his growing international fame like a natural. Who knows? Symphony No. 93 might inspire you to launch your own second act.

One of the most exciting young pianists of the new generation, Jeneba Kanneh-Mason has been taking the world by storm since her BBC Proms debut in 2022. She brings an exciting and eclectic programme of Claude Debussy, Ludwig van Beethoven and American composers Florence Price and William Grant Still, ending with Frédéric Chopin’s poetic third and fourth Ballades.

Love tangles, deception, double standards: Rossini ignites a fast-paced firework display in the lively overture to his opera La scala di seta. Hardly anyone could deliver this with more spirit than a stylistically assured conductor like Antonino Fogliani. Things get exciting in Bruno Maderna's Giardino religioso. There are no fixed sequences here; musicians and conductor decide in real time where the journey will take them. It sounds chaotic, but it's cleverly executed! The result is a truly special concert moment. No less thrilling is Nino Rota's Bassoon Concerto, played by Sophie Dervaux, the principal bassoonist of the Vienna Philharmonic. Rota was much more than "just" a film music genius. In addition to ten operas, he composed numerous other works – and this charming, joyful concerto. Haydn's Symphony "Mit dem Paukenschlag", which sparkles with wit and inventiveness, is another highlight of a program that promises to be as unusual as it is entertaining.

Approaching a genius: With his "Journey to Mozart," Daniel Hope embarked on his first musical adventure into the Mozart cosmos in 2018. A world of sound that is always worth exploring and bringing to life anew. "His music has something otherworldly, untouchable, almost unattainable. And yet he was so human," says Hope. In his new version of "Journey to Mozart," the violinist approaches the Salzburg master by once again allowing his contemporaries to have their say: In addition to famous colleagues such as Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Glück, this time the program also includes a violin concerto by arguably the most extraordinary musician of Mozart's time: Joseph Bologne, the son of a French nobleman and a slave from Guadeloupe, made a career during the French Revolution both as a violin virtuoso and composer, as well as an accomplished fencer in the Légion des Américains et du Midi.

The focus is on the Piano Concerto K. 467, which the genius loci wrote just a few weeks after his famous D minor concerto, and whose slow movement transports the listener to higher spheres.

'The Ring' stands as the undisputed giant of operatic literature. Wagner's great divine tale of the creation and destruction of the world takes four evenings to perform, but in composer Henk de Vlieger's arrangement, the glowing orchestral sounds are allowed to shine with undiminished dramatic power, even though the suite only lasts a little over an hour.

In 1891, Richard Strauss read Don Quixote, a novel of adventurous knightly tales by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, which had been suggested to him by Cosima Wagner. The book must have made a lasting impression on the composer. He worked on the symphonic poem for six years before it premiered in Cologne in 1898. British cellist Steven Isserlis will lend his instrument’s voice to the title character. Always by his side: Sancho Panza, brought to life by the violist Emiko Yuasa – who has been the First Principal Viola of the BRSO since last March. We are delighted to welcome back Daniel Harding, who will transport us into mythical worlds in this concert – which also include Hans Werner Henze’s Erlkönig. Between the two works, Haydn’s “La passione” in F minor will provide an intense, even existential experience.

Tapiola Sinfonietta's artistic partner Nicolas Altstaedt once again performed as both cellist and conductor. Mozart offered Tchaikovsky an image of a time of happiness and a world of beauty, which he sought in his Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra. The version of the Variations that spread around the world was tampered with by cello soloist Fitzenhagen, but Altstaedt offers an opportunity to hear the work in the form the composer intended. Wilhelm Killmayer (1927-2017), who was active in Munich, experimented with modernism early in his career before surrendering to the tonal joy of life, La joie de vivre. This is also reflected in the Transylvanian folk dances that follow in the footsteps of Veressin Bartok with a lighter step. Haydn's energetic Symphony No. 70 shed optimism on the Esterházy princely court after a devastating fire.

At the first Pro Musica concert of the year, the musicians of the Odense Symphony Orchestra take the audience on a journey through three centuries of chamber music history; from the inventor of the string quartet to the most beloved clarinet quintet of the high romantic period to a quintet from one of the greatest pioneers of the 20th century. In Haydn's stormy and ambitious late quartet, for example, we can look forward to the "witch's minuet" in two-part canon. Prokofiev's circus-inspired quintet from 1924 for the sonically motley combination of oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and double bass is the most whimsical piece of music you will hear in a long time. It was written for a traveling ballet troupe under the title Trapeze, but achieved immortality as a six-movement, picturesque quintet.
