Approaching a genius: With his "Journey to Mozart," Daniel Hope embarked on his first musical adventure into the Mozart cosmos in 2018. A world of sound that is always worth exploring and bringing to life anew. "His music has something otherworldly, untouchable, almost unattainable. And yet he was so human," says Hope. In his new version of "Journey to Mozart," the violinist approaches the Salzburg master by once again allowing his contemporaries to have their say: In addition to famous colleagues such as Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Glück, this time the program also includes a violin concerto by arguably the most extraordinary musician of Mozart's time: Joseph Bologne, the son of a French nobleman and a slave from Guadeloupe, made a career during the French Revolution both as a violin virtuoso and composer, as well as an accomplished fencer in the Légion des Américains et du Midi.

In 1891, Richard Strauss read Don Quixote, a novel of adventurous knightly tales by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, which had been suggested to him by Cosima Wagner. The book must have made a lasting impression on the composer. He worked on the symphonic poem for six years before it premiered in Cologne in 1898. British cellist Steven Isserlis will lend his instrument’s voice to the title character. Always by his side: Sancho Panza, brought to life by the violist Emiko Yuasa – who has been the First Principal Viola of the BRSO since last March. We are delighted to welcome back Daniel Harding, who will transport us into mythical worlds in this concert – which also include Hans Werner Henze’s Erlkönig. Between the two works, Haydn’s “La passione” in F minor will provide an intense, even existential experience.

Tapiola Sinfonietta's artistic partner Nicolas Altstaedt once again performed as both cellist and conductor. Mozart offered Tchaikovsky an image of a time of happiness and a world of beauty, which he sought in his Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra. The version of the Variations that spread around the world was tampered with by cello soloist Fitzenhagen, but Altstaedt offers an opportunity to hear the work in the form the composer intended. Wilhelm Killmayer (1927-2017), who was active in Munich, experimented with modernism early in his career before surrendering to the tonal joy of life, La joie de vivre. This is also reflected in the Transylvanian folk dances that follow in the footsteps of Veressin Bartok with a lighter step. Haydn's energetic Symphony No. 70 shed optimism on the Esterházy princely court after a devastating fire.

The Mozartists’ revelatory MOZART 250 series continues with a concert celebrating Mozart’s 270th birthday.

This programme of works composed 250 years ago in 1776 includes highlights from Mozart’s incidental music to the play Thamos, King of Egypt, which contains some of the most dynamic and startlingly modernistic music that he ever wrote, and a symphony comprising four movements from his ‘Haffner’ Serenade – one of his earliest masterpieces but still curiously neglected and undervalued.

At the first Pro Musica concert of the year, the musicians of the Odense Symphony Orchestra take the audience on a journey through three centuries of chamber music history; from the inventor of the string quartet to the most beloved clarinet quintet of the high romantic period to a quintet from one of the greatest pioneers of the 20th century. In Haydn's stormy and ambitious late quartet, for example, we can look forward to the "witch's minuet" in two-part canon. Prokofiev's circus-inspired quintet from 1924 for the sonically motley combination of oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and double bass is the most whimsical piece of music you will hear in a long time. It was written for a traveling ballet troupe under the title Trapeze, but achieved immortality as a six-movement, picturesque quintet.

The evening begins with a world premiere by Mackinnon-Botti, a contemporary composition that promises to challenge and inspire, featuring the composer himself as beatboxing soloist. Like the MDR Symphony Orchestra, our chamber music series focuses on Joseph Haydn—particularly on the compositions he composed during his two stays in England in 1791/92 and 1794/95. This includes a selection of folk song arrangements from Scottish and Welsh sources, as well as two of the four so-called London Trios for two flutes and cello. The program is complemented by the incredibly charming Harmoniemusik from Mozart's Don Giovanni, arranged by Joseph Triebensee around 1810. Incidentally, the Bohemian composer and oboist himself participated in the premiere of The Magic Flute under Mozart's direction.

The Boston Musical Intelligencer praises the Isidore String Quartet’s “invigorating and refreshing” playing and “bold virtuosity.” Winner of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the group was formed in 2019 at the Juilliard School. Since that time, the quartet has appeared in major series throughout North America, collaborating with eminent performers including James Ehnes, Jeremy Denk, Shai Wosner, and Jon Nakamatsu. The Isidore Quartet’s 2024-25 season included concert appearances across the US and Canada, as well as at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and multiple cities in Germany. Since their Banff Competition-winning performance featuring Billy Childs’s String Quartet No. 2 (“Awakenings”), the quartet has developed a strong connection to the composer’s works, and in the 2025-26 season, they will premiere a new string quartet written for them by Childs.

For the first time, Iceland, with the Harpa in Reykjavik, is participating in the European Concert Hall Organization's annual "Rising Stars" program, which sends young artists on tour through the continent's major concert halls. And with Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, a singer from the Nordic island nation was directly nominated. She loves the poetic, mystical traditions of her country and is currently performing brilliantly not only on the major opera stages in Basel and Berlin, but also realizing unusual projects as a photographer and video artist.

One of the audience favorites from UMS’s 23/24 season was the UMS debut of México’s Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, led by the dynamic conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto. The sheer exuberance and palpable joy from the musicians were felt throughout the audience, which remained on its feet long after the performance ended, cheering for more.

A dubious meeting of heroes: The notorious womanizer Don Juan and the tragicomic Don Quixote would have little in common if Richard Strauss hadn't so brilliantly captured their fates in music. The Vienna Philharmonic will juxtapose the two symphonic poems in their ProArte program, bringing to life the stories of the literary-confused knight with his aide Sancho Panza and the momentous love affairs of the other Don. At the helm will be Daniel Harding, arguably one of the most interesting conductors of our time: after a meteoric start to his career, he put his baton aside for a while to pursue his second passion, flying as a pilot for Air France. Now, fortunately for audiences, he regularly conducts the finest orchestras again. Perhaps he'll even fly to the performance himself? Who knows.

Trio Seoul was founded in 2022 by Bienen School associate professor of violin Jinjoo Cho, pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, and cellist and Bienen alumnus Brannon Cho. All three are top prize winners and laureates of prestigious international competitions including the Concours musical international de Montréal, the Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition, and the Queen Elisabeth Competition. The trio regularly collaborates with artists in multiple fields, including composers, choreographers, writers, and visual artists, and its members have appeared as soloists with celebrated orchestras throughout the world. The city of Seoul serves as a dynamic symbol of the ensemble’s cultural roots and artistic intensity.

The Minguet Quartet's programs are not just chamber music of the highest caliber, but always also an invitation to the audience to engage in dialogue and participation. The four musicians have already committed themselves to this with their ensemble's name: their namesake is the Spanish writer and music educator Pablo Minguet, who strove in his writings to provide access to the fine arts for all. The fourth chamber concert also features works from different eras in dialogue with each other: the concert begins in a truly classical style with one of the last quartets by Joseph Haydn, the inventor of the string quartet; at the end, we hear Schoenberg's String Quartet No. 2, nothing less than a milestone in New Music – the transition to atonality. Tradition and modernity also converge in the works of the Romantics Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann, as they are performed in the transcription by Aribert Reimann, one of the most distinguished composers of the second half of the 20th century, who died in 2024. The quartet also enters into dialogue with soprano Sarah Maria Sun, who is also known for her profound program ideas and as a specialist in contemporary music: she has already sung more than 400 world premieres.

The heart of the Valencia Baryton Project is the trio of baryton, viola, and violoncello, for which Haydn wrote 123 works of outstanding beauty as the court composer for the Prince Esterhazy of Austria. A cross between the viol da gamba and lirone, with 10 resonating and plucked strings down the back of the instrument, the baryton gives the traditional string trio an entirely new dimension.

As a boy, Giovanni’s parents wanted to enrol him in the preparatory department of the Milan Conservatoire. According to the school, their son was too high-spirited, and he was not admitted as a violin student, but he soon more than made up for their disappointment. He studied the recorder, and while still a student, he joined with the lute player Luca Pianca in establishing Il Giardino Armonico—an ensemble that has won worldwide renown over its 40 years of existence in the field of the informed interpretation of early music.

Igor Stravinsky was a musical chameleon: a radical avant-gardist, a curious neoclassicist, and later even a proponent of twelve-tone music. Stagnation? None of this! Pulcinella, the ballet from his neoclassical phase, is based on music by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. But Stravinsky wouldn't be Stravinsky if he hadn't created a modern soundscape from Baroque quotations. The result is a modern classic. Joseph Haydn is a classic of "true" classical music. His Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major is a stroke of genius: playful, virtuosic, and full of sophisticated surprises. He knew exactly how to captivate his audience—and how to challenge his soloists, in this case Roman Lemmel, principal trumpeter of the Bremen Philharmonic. And of course, Brahms: He is always a classic—even if not in the stylistic sense. Clara Schumann was enraptured by his Third Symphony: "What a work, what poetry! Every movement a jewel, every note of a single piece."

A new premiere by Arizona-raised Paolo Prestini is bookended by works by Gabriela Lena Frank, Villa-Lobos, and Haydn’s Overture to L’isola disabitata and Symphony No. 45, “Farewell.”

Although Haydn’s Symphony No. 45, the “Farewell,” is known for its dramatic Adagio final movement where the musicians exit the stage, it stands on its own as a beautiful, affecting work. Haydn was also an accomplished opera composer; his opera L’isola disabitata tells the story of sisters stranded on a desert island for 13 years, developed in partnership with the most famous librettist of his time, Pietro Metastasio.

“She is a statue of beauty when standing or sitting: grace itself when she moves,” the 18th century English writer and artist Horace Walpole wrote about the legendary Queen of France Marie Antoinette. This colourful character from French history inspired the ballet by the French choreographer Thierry Malandain that premiered with his own ensemble, Malandain Ballet Biarritz, in 2019 in the very theatre that Marie Antoinette inaugurated on 16 May 1770 to mark her wedding to Louis XVI: the Opéra Royal Château de Versailles.

Marie Antoinette’s life in Versailles is central to Malandain’s ballet, which the choreographer has created to music by two of her contemporaries – Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Gluck. The piece depicts her arrival at court, her wedding day, the opening of the opera house with Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Persée – as a ballet within the ballet – the attempted escape that would ultimately be her undoing and the infamous parties and balls associated with the Queen.

Gustav Mahler’s symphonies have changed the way we think about music and his Fourth Symphony is a masterpiece of joy and childlike wonder that evokes the gates of heaven. Conductor Manfred Honeck makes his triumphant return in a program of orchestral gems from his homeland, Austria.

Since its founding in 2010, Trio Gaspard has established itself as one of the finest and most sought-after piano trios of its generation. The ensemble, led by the wonderful pianist and chamber musician Nicholas Rimmer, is dedicated to the classical trio repertoire, but also explores more obscure works and contemporary works. The first installments of its complete recording of the Haydn Trios have been critically acclaimed and, according to "Strad" magazine, "have left us wanting more." Following performances at London's Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Shanghai Symphony Hall, among others, Trio Gaspard now makes its Blaibach debut.
