Papa Haydn? Far from being merely dignified and formal, his symphonies are surprising, full of flashes of inspiration, play with expectations – and are full of wit. With 107 symphonies, Joseph Haydn not only left behind an impressive number, but also had a decisive influence on the genre. Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler – they all built on the foundation laid by Haydn. With three of his favourite symphonies, Gürzenich Kapellmeister Andrés Orozco-Estrada invites you on a special journey of discovery – and takes you into the orchestra's engine room. In informal concert talks, you can hear and see how music is created, how it is refined during rehearsals – and perhaps the audience will even be allowed to have a say in one or two interpretations. An invitation to anyone who wants to experience classical music in a different way: accessible, exciting and full of the joy of discovery.

Baroque trailblazers Antonio Vivaldi and J. S. Bach launch this journey through the world of 18th-century orchestral music. Concertmaster Gina DiBello shines in one of Vivaldi’s most intriguing dark-hued concertos, balanced by the buoyant, dance-driven elegance of Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 1. Telemann’s cosmopolitan brilliance and the bold innovation of his godson, C. P. E. Bach, lead seamlessly to Joseph Haydn’s impassioned Symphony No. 80.

Vienna fostered the development of two extraordinary schools of composers. This first concert of the Nash Ensemble’s series Beethoven Re-Sounded follows the first wave of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. They were to take music to the brink of Romanticism and lay the foundations for Schoenberg and his colleagues to stretch that Romanticism to breaking point.

Fans of more traditional Classical music will delight in this airy program that highlights music from the 18th century. SPCO flutists Julia Bogorad-Kogan and Alicia McQuerrey team up for a spritely double concerto that will keep you on the edge of your seat with its momentum — a similar feel to the titular symphony by Joseph Haydn whose theme earned its nickname from the uneven gait of a hen. In addition to the breathy woodwinds, you'll also hear from strings, with a soulful solo by violinist Eunice Kim and a more contemporary work for string orchestra rooted in the fiddling traditions of the composer's native Finland.

The Chiaroscuro Quartet, playing on period instruments, takes a tour from the early years of the string quartet’s history to visit one of the genre’s highest summits. It devotes its programme’s first half to two seminal works by Haydn, jewels from his pioneering Op. 20 set, before turning to Beethoven’s Op. 132, complete with its exalted ‘Hymn of Thanksgiving to God for recovery from illness’.

Step into the splendour of Inner Temple Hall for an exhilarating evening with the London Mozart Players, conducted by Jonathan Bloxham. The programme opens with Mozart’s sparkling Marriage of Figaro Overture and closes with the majestic ‘Prague’ Symphony, framing Haydn’s radiant Cello Concerto in C major. Rising star Leo Popplewell will be the cello soloist, while the orchestra’s acclaimed clarity and energy promise to illuminate every note. Within one of London’s most captivating and lesser-known historic spaces, this concert is given in memory of Joe Butler-Sloss, former secretary of the Bar Musical Society and Leslie Wise, former treasurer of the Society. Brooklyn Rider presents a thoughtfully curated program that places Beethoven’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 59, No. 3 within a broader musical tradition of innovation and expression. One of the three quartets commissioned by Count Razumovsky, this work marks a significant moment in Beethoven’s development, expanding the expressive range and structural ambition of the string quartet. Framed by music from Haydn to contemporary composers, the program highlights how Beethoven’s ideas grew from—and continue to influence—the chamber music tradition. Known for their precision, curiosity, and commitment to new music, Brooklyn Rider approaches this repertoire with clarity and balance, offering performances that respect the past while engaging directly with the present. This concert reflects the season’s central theme: Beethoven as both heir to tradition and catalyst for artistic evolution.

Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice left an indelible impression on the musical life of Vienna following its world première at the imperial city’s Burgtheater in 1762. Iestyn Davies and Oliver Wass have created a dramatic cantata from the opera’s best-known music, preserving the original’s special eloquence and power. Their ‘Vienna Evening’ also includes songs by Haydn, who conducted a performance of Orfeo ed Euridice in the 1770s, and Adelaide, an impassioned expression of romantic love from Beethoven’s first years in Vienna.

The legendary Sir John Eliot Gardiner will conduct the Budapest Festival Orchestra for the first time! The Honorary Doctor of the Liszt Academy and multiple Grammy Award-winning conductor rose to international fame mainly through his performances of early music, but he also enjoys exploring Romantic compositions. He conducts with “boundless energy,” to borrow a characterization from The Guardian, be it Joseph Haydn or Jean Sibelius, the composers featured in his program. Although the two composers arguably have little in common, the dual threads of patriotism and cosmopolitanism run through the concert. The evening’s centerpiece is a work from Haydn’s triumphant London period, composed following his release from decades of service to the Esterházy court. The program concludes with a Sibelius symphony inspired by an excursion to Italy. With the opening piece, BFO musicians will once again demonstrate their talents as a choir with a deeply moving performance of the heart-wrenching song by the Finnish composer.

Mozart, Haydn, Telemann and Philidor: four composers in a passionate age, reinventing music on the wing. A dynamic start to a season of music that defies convention.
They called it “sturm und drang” - “storm and stress” - and for a few tempestuous years in the 1760s, it seemed as if music itself had turned upside down. No emotion was too powerful: this was a time for child geniuses, young radicals and cutting-edge comedy – and for old dogs to learn a few new tricks, too.

Tonight, Laurence Cummings and Academy of Ancient Music dive headlong into the crucible, with a volcanic symphony from the young Haydn, the boy Mozart’s brilliant symphonic debut, and a real discovery – a very Gallic spin on a bawdy English romp from the French composer Philidor. And then, the astonishing tragedy of Ino, retold by the 84-year old Telemann in music that would dazzle a composer a quarter his age, with 2026 Grammy Award-winning American soprano Amanda Forsythe. It’ll thrill you, too.

Friedrich Klinger’s play Sturm und Drang, which retrospectively gave its name to the emotionally turbulent movement that swept through literature, art and music in the 1760s and 1770s, was written 250 years ago in 1776. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s own music director, Robert Spano, is also an accomplished pianist and composer. In this first chamber concert of the season, another star pianist, Peter Takács, joins Spano in a duet by Schubert, the Fantasie in F minor. This captivating program bridges the classical elegance of Haydn’s Variations in F minor and Capriccio with the profound depth of late Beethoven, featuring his sublime Bagatelles and the monumental final Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor. Quatuor Agate’s biography tells the story of how its four players joined forces to prepare for a concert that was destined never to happen. The French string quartet, inspired by the rehearsal process, overcame that initial setback to make its debut a decade ago and progress to become one of the finest among today’s young chamber groups. It pairs Haydn’s tuneful Op. 20 No. 4 with the equally melodious second of Korngold’s string quartets, written shortly before he made his first visit to Hollywood in 1933.

The Canadian pianist, having given her first UK performance on fortepiano at Wigmore Hall in 2024, returns to the instrument for two contrasting concertos, the first an emotionally stormy work from the mid-1740s, the second being one of Mozart’s most intimate compositions for keyboard and ensemble.

That broadened her horizons, she says — and benefits her piano playing, too.

‘How should I describe such a colossal crisis?’ Mahler wrote in 1909. ‘Yet I am thirstier than ever for life …’ Personal and professional loss had taken the composer to the brink, but even as he faced tragedy he experienced the pleasures of living with renewed intensity. It’s this strange, urgent ecstasy that runs through Das Lied von der Erde (‘The Song of the Earth’) – a collision of symphony and song, life and loss. This epic musical farewell meets the witty musical parting of Haydn’s ‘Farewell’ Symphony, with its famous final movement of ever-shrinking forces. Bushra El-Turk’s Mosaic opens the concert with nods to Das Lied, in a meditation on identity, otherness and exoticism.

Bard’s next chamber concert, Program Eight, “The Pinnacle of Achievement,” celebrates the music of Mozart and Joseph Haydn, when both were in their prime. Featured works include Mozart’s String Quintet in G minor, a profound, dark-hued masterpiece, written during his father’s final illness; several of Mozart’s finest lieder; and his Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, perhaps the greatest of his concertos, in the chamber arrangement to which he gave his blessing, by his student Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Known for good reason as the “Father of the String Quartet,” the elder Haydn brother is represented by the third of his “Russian” quartets, a mature work nicknamed “The Joke,” and perhaps one of those that inspired the six that Mozart dedicated to him.

It is always a good day when Jon Deak shows up on your doorstep. This concert marks his triumphant return (indeed, his third visit!) to Newburyport and the first appearance at NCMF of his friend and collaborator, legendary Metropolitan opera soprano Lucy Shelton. The concert begins with Lucy performing Cathy Berberian’s tour-de-force for solo soprano with a score written not in musical notation but as a cartoon (the score will be projected so the audience can follow along). Also featured on the program is Haydn’s B Minor quartet. Papa Haydn was famous for his sunny disposition but this is an unusually dark and enigmatic work. As long as we are flipping traditional roles, Shostakovich, known a bit as the king of despair, has, with his first quartet in C Major, a work that is warm and even sunny at times.
