This pianist fits into no mold. Bridget Yee was born in Malaysia in 2004, came to London at age eleven to study, and went on to win the Windsor International Piano Competition, among others. Yet she doesn’t shine only at the keyboard: she also trained as a cellist and double bassist, performing in orchestral concerts under Jac van Steen and Benjamin Zander. That broadened her horizons, she says — and benefits her piano playing, too.

‘How should I describe such a colossal crisis?’ Mahler wrote in 1909. ‘Yet I am thirstier than ever for life …’ Personal and professional loss had taken the composer to the brink, but even as he faced tragedy he experienced the pleasures of living with renewed intensity. It’s this strange, urgent ecstasy that runs through Das Lied von der Erde (‘The Song of the Earth’) – a collision of symphony and song, life and loss. This epic musical farewell meets the witty musical parting of Haydn’s ‘Farewell’ Symphony, with its famous final movement of ever-shrinking forces. Bushra El-Turk’s Mosaic opens the concert with nods to Das Lied, in a meditation on identity, otherness and exoticism.

The world-famous French pianist Jean-Marc Luisada returns to the Paliesius Manor - this time he invites listeners to the world of fantasies and nocturnes. The works of Joseph Haydn, Fryderyk Chopin and Gabriel Fauré will be performed, revealing the diversity and beauty of the genres of fantasies and nocturnes. Chopin's romance, Haydn's playfulness and Fauré's elegant introspection will intertwine into one delicate musical journey. Jean-Marc Luisada won the F. Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1985 and is now known as one of the best and most interesting interpreters of F. Chopin in the world.

It is always a good day when Jon Deak shows up on your doorstep. This concert marks his triumphant return (indeed, his third visit!) to Newburyport and the first appearance at NCMF of his friend and collaborator, legendary Metropolitan opera soprano Lucy Shelton. The concert begins with Lucy performing Cathy Berberian’s tour-de-force for solo soprano with a score written not in musical notation but as a cartoon (the score will be projected so the audience can follow along). Also featured on the program is Haydn’s B Minor quartet. Papa Haydn was famous for his sunny disposition but this is an unusually dark and enigmatic work. As long as we are flipping traditional roles, Shostakovich, known a bit as the king of despair, has, with his first quartet in C Major, a work that is warm and even sunny at times.

Austrian composer Ignace Pleyel, who studied with Haydn, found lasting fame as a pioneer of piano building. His Paris-based company continued producing fine instruments after his death in 1831, influencing the development of piano works by, among others, Chopin and Debussy. Finghin Collins, inspired to pay homage to Pleyel after playing on a rebuilt Pleyel 280 concert grand piano dating from 1937, includes beautiful miniatures by the Franco-Irish composer Joseph O’Kelly and Georges Pfeiffer, both partners in the Pleyel firm.

Inspired by hearing Handel in London – and with the parting gift of a libretto intended for that composer – Haydn was inspired to write his most ambitious work to date. From ‘chaos’, where classical harmonic logic is repeatedly contradicted, it moves on to the most famous C major chord in music on “Let There Be Light”.

The biblical days of creation are then depicted in a sequence of solos, each ‘day’ ending with a powerful chorus, culminating in the arrival in Eden of a pre-lapsarian Adam and Eve.

Originally composed as an orchestral arrangement for the Good Friday liturgy, the music later unfolded its haunting effect in versions for string quartet, piano, and choir. Tonight’s event “reconstructs” the programme of a concert on 7 March 1897. It was the last time Brahms attended a public performance of his own music. That evening the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Hans Richter, were to play the three pieces here in what may seem like a curious order to modern audiences (particularly given the ending of ‘La Chasse’…)

Cornelius Meister and the Staatsorchester Stuttgart conclude their multi-year Gustav Mahler cycle with three concerts. With the death of his patron Prince Nikolaus Esterházy in 1790, Haydn became a free agent, and Johann Peter Salomon seized the opportunity to bring Europe’s most famous composer to Soho. Haydn's music already dominated the fashionable Hanover Square Rooms, especially after the death of the London-based Johann Christian Bach (youngest son of Johann Sebastian), whose Symphony in G minor opens the concert's second half.

Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 2 was premiered at Hanover Square in 1784. A decade later, he embarked on his second trip to London, and from this period come two of his best-known symphonies, earning nicknames through their popularity: the "Military" (No. 100), and the "London" (No. 104).

The English Baroque Soloists have this music in their blood, and their use of period instruments casts these works in an entirely fresh light. They are joined by cellist Christophe Coin, making his MCO debut. Historically-informed performance specialist Peter Whelan returns to direct after a “thrilling” (The Times), "dazzling" (The Observer) and “unbeatable” (Scherzo) debut with the orchestra in 2024.

Unusually we’re playing just the one piece for our season ending concert this year, but what a piece of music it is — Haydn’s Creation!

“The Creation” is an oratorio written by Joseph Haydn in 1797 and 1798, and considered by many to be one of his masterpieces. It depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as narrated in the Book of Genesis and is scored for soprano, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and orchestra. Altogether this musical feast is around 2 hours long.

Together with George Frideric Handel’s oratorios, it had an impact right up to the High Romantic period. The choir responds to the narrative with songs of praise, of which »Die Himmel erzählen« has become one of the most popular vocal works.

The chamber music ensembles of the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole

Each year from January until June, about 60 young people meet at the Rudolfinum to create a beautiful joint concert under the guidance of players from the Czech Philharmonic (and with support from their teachers). This time, the project participants are from the regions of Hradec Králové, Moravian Silesia, Pilsen, Zlín, and Prague. The charismatic conductor Petr Altrichter will lead the concluding concert.

Trumpet and natural horn resound in this dazzling program dedicated to Mozart and Haydn. A virtuoso celebration of the hunt and orchestral fanfare. While concertos often reveal the immense talent of the soloist they are intended for, the Concentus Musicus Wien can now count on the virtuoso breath of David Guerrier on trumpet and horn in this delightful program. Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3 is followed by an exuberant and concise masterpiece, Haydn's Trumpet Concerto. The Austrian ensemble, a symbolic guest of La Seine Musicale, will end this evening, still in the company of Haydn, with a bang by sounding the hunting call.!

Celebrated for their “multifaceted artistry” and “brilliantly idiomatic” programming (New York Times), the Poiesis Quartet is the winner of the 2026 Cleveland Quartet Award and the First Prize and Commission Prize recipients of the 2025 Banff International String Quartet Competition. They will perform works from the canon by Joseph Haydn and Sergei Prokofiev alongside contemporary works by Sky Macklay, Chickasaw classical composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, and a newly commissioned work by Kevin Lau.

When Mozart referred to Joseph Haydn as the "father, guide, and friend" of his string quartets, he was alluding to the great model of the Quartets Op. 33, which were printed at the end of 1781 and with which Haydn had ushered in a new era for the genre. The six String Quartets Op. 33 are considered the beginning of Viennese Classicism; they are also called the "Russian Quartets" because of their dedication to Grand Duke Paul of Russia. At the beginning of Quartet No. 3, the first violin enters with a kind of bird call over pulsating C major chords, from which the nickname "Bird Quartet" derives.

During his visits to London between 1791 and 1795, Haydn found himself greatly inspired by the numerous performances of Handel’s works he attended. He was particularly moved by the grandeur of Messiah and Israel in Egypt which sparked his desire to create an oratorio of his own. Before Haydn returned to Vienna, violinist Johann Peter Salomon presented him with an anonymous English libretto which had supposedly been intended for Handel half a century earlier. The text – which draws from the Book of Genesis, John Milton’s epic Poem Paradise Lost (1667), and the Book of Psalms – resonated deeply with Haydn’s devout Catholic faith.

Tempora mutantur — the nickname of Haydn’s Symphony No. 64 — takes its name from the Latin adage, “The times change, and we change with them.” Inspired by this reflection, Finnish conductor and violinist Pekka Kuusisto presents a dynamic program featuring former Mead Composer-in-Residence Anna Clyne’s Sound and Fury alongside folk- and dance-inspired works by Grieg and Rautavaara. Trading baton for bow, Kuusisto dazzles as soloist in Kreisler’s vibrant, Vivaldi-inspired Violin Concerto.

A friendship developed between Joseph Joachim, the celebrated violinist, and Johannes Brahms, the quintessential composer, characterized by both artistic admiration and critical tension. Joachim, immediately captivated by Brahms's music, soon became his most important confidant and interpreter. Their letters reveal a complex interplay of admiration, loyalty, and sometimes wounded pride—a delicate web of mutual respect and high expectations. However, from 1884 onward, the friendship between Johannes Brahms and Joseph Joachim was no longer as untroubled as in its early years, for Brahms had sided with Joachim's wife in their divorce proceedings, and since then, the once warm relationship had cooled—marked by expressions and gestures of reserve, coupled with the quiet pride of two artists. Now, however, Brahms's "Double Concerto" for violin and cello was intended to be a sign of reconciliation—a musical dialogue that sought to bridge the gap between them.

Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Seasons was written shortly after the first successful performances of its sister work, The Creation. The two works have a close spiritual relationship. While The Creation depicts the creation of the world in the course of the Genesis account, The Seasons is about the existence of the world in the course of the year, about the experience of divine creation in the cyclical growth and decay of nature.
