Since its founding in 2010, Trio Gaspard has established itself as one of the finest and most sought-after piano trios of its generation. The ensemble, led by the wonderful pianist and chamber musician Nicholas Rimmer, is dedicated to the classical trio repertoire, but also explores more obscure works and contemporary works. The first installments of its complete recording of the Haydn Trios have been critically acclaimed and, according to "Strad" magazine, "have left us wanting more." Following performances at London's Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Shanghai Symphony Hall, among others, Trio Gaspard now makes its Blaibach debut.

The string quartet is considered the pinnacle of chamber music – and we can experience why this is so at performances by the Quatuor Ébène: In around two decades, an ensemble has grown that not only plays in the premier league of international quartets, but also regularly leaves audiences breathless with its unconditional courage to take risks and the intensity of its interpretations. Even supposedly well-known repertoire sounds refreshingly new and excitingly different with the Quatuor Ébène. For example, Joseph Haydn, who is considered the inventor of the genre. The program features one of the Viennese classic's late quartets, the String Quartet in G major, Op. 76 No. 1, in which he bundled all his achievements in this field, as a kind of legacy. The bar was thus set high for subsequent generations of composers, a fact that Johannes Brahms also felt: he spent around 20 years exploring the genre before presenting his first quartets to the public with Opus 51. Framed by the two German-speaking composers, the only string quartet by the Frenchman Maurice Ravel can be heard, which is full of wonderful sound effects.

“A passion for musical discovery”— that is what the members of L’Armonia Terrena say unites them. What this ensemble has uncovered in the contrasting musical worlds of Haydn, Ravel and Martinů will be revealed in largest instrumental group performance to take place during this season’s matinee series. The ensemble will be led by Zdeněk Klauda, with Czech Philharmonic cellist Eduard Šístek appearing as soloist.

In 1852, Robert Schumann composed the Missa sacra for church services – a work that expresses not a denominational but a universal religious sentiment. The motet "Do Not Despair," initially described by Schumann as a "religious hymn," was first performed on July 4, 1850, for a secular occasion – the 25th anniversary of the St. Pauli University Choir in Leipzig. Haydn's Fifth London Symphony demonstrates the composer's independence from courtly taste and circumstances: He presents this work with pathos, earnestness, passion – and, unusually, in a minor key – thus forging a programmatic link back to Schumann.

Barbara Hannigan returns to Berwaldhallen to perform the Iranian composer Golfam Khayam’s work I’m not a Tale to be Told together with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Next follows Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, also known as the ‘Trauersinphonie,’ one of the composer’s most famous works. Dmitri Shostakovich's son Maxim described the 15th and final symphony of his father, who died 50 years ago and to whom the music world will dedicate a commemorative year in 2025, as an autobiography from birth to death . Announced as a joyful symphony, Shostakovich composed a complex composition a few years before his death: serious, but also ironic, which, as it were, reflects on his eventful life. He uses quotations from himself and from some of his colleagues, including Gioachino Rossini, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Gustav Mahler.

Trio Azura was founded in 2022 at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. The ensemble consists of Canadian violinist Duncan McDougall, South Korean cellist Yejin Hong, and Chinese pianist Yanfeng (Tony) Bai. They are the Ensemble in Residence at Colburn, studying under faculty members Jonathan Brown, Fabio Bidini, Martin Beaver, and Clive Greensmith. The Trio won the Grand Prize and Gold Medal at the 51st Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In addition, they received the Lift Every Voice Prize for the best performance of a work by an underrepresented composer, as well as the Horszowski Trio Prize. They are also prize winners at the Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin, China.

Both start out serious and in a minor key before working their way toward radiant finales. Composed three years apart, these pieces are milestones in Viennese Classical and modern music of the late 18th century.

Back by popular demand, the Modigliani Quartet is recognized as one of today’s most sought-after quartets, featuring regularly in prominent international series and on the world’s most prestigious stages.

Joseph Haydn shows his entertaining side in the best sense of the word in his famous Trio in G major, which he composed in London in 1795. Haydn had been Kapellmeister at the court of the Esterházy family for almost thirty years. There he also became acquainted with original Hungarian dance music, which he presented to the delighted London audience in the last movement of the trio, the Rondo all’Ongarese. Zoltán Kodály had a completely different view of Hungarian folk music. He did not look for the temperamental element in it, but rather - like his colleague Béla Bartók - discovered a “Hungarian style“ on his research trips, “free of any sentimentality” and “superfluous ornamentation”. This is exactly what Kodály adopted in his second string quartet, which he composed between 1916 and 1918: a work of great seriousness and almost archaic power. In his Piano Quartet No. 1, on the other hand, Johannes Brahms indulges in Hungarian folklore, which the Hamburg-born composer also revived in his Hungarian Dances. In the final Rondo alla Zingarese of his quartet, Brahms sets sparks flying.

The concert opens with Haydn’s radiant String Quartet in D major showcasing his signature elegance and wit. At the heart of the programme is the world premiere of Canaima, a vivid new work by Montero inspired by the majestic landscapes and ecological fragility of Venezuela’s Canaima National Park. The evening concludes with Dvořák’s much-loved Piano Quintet No 2 a Romantic-era gem filled with soaring melodies, folk rhythms, and spirited interplay between piano and strings.

Masterworks 2 offers an evening of music, written purely for the enjoyment of beauty, juxtaposed with Haydn’s (originally titled) Mass for Troubled Times. Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans presents a pastoral of the natural world including lyrical melodies as well as tempestuous scenes. The second of Brahms’ two serenades is truly music for music’s sake—a tuneful stroll in the concert hall. Paired with these two works, The Lord Nelson Mass was written for the name day of Princess Esterházy, the wife of Haydn’s patron. The Mass honors Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over Napoleon at Aboukir, just off the coast of North Africa at Alexandria in 1798.

With a career spanning four decades, Hardenberger is known as one of the most prominent and innovative trumpet players in the world. He has collaborated with some of the greatest orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and he continues to set new standards for what can be achieved with the trumpet. This evening, Hardenberger presents, among other things, one of the greatest classics of trumpet literature, Haydn's Trumpet Concerto, which with its elegant melody and virtuoso challenges is a work that truly shows the many facets of the instrument.

Conductor and bassoonist Mathieu Lussier leads the Orchestra in a varied and witty program of music by Johann Christian Bach and an overture by Sophie Gail (famous in her day as a composer of opéra comique), plus Haydn's Symphony No. 98, a profound tribute to his dear friend Mozart.

The legendary Takács Quartet brings their unparalleled artistry to the stage, illuminated by the soft glow of candlelight. Their program is a delightful mix of classic and contemporary, featuring Haydn’s elegant String Quartet Op. 74 No. 3, the inventive world premiere of Clarice Assad’s new String Quartet (a Schlichting commission), and Debussy’s spontaneous String Quartet. The second subscription concert of the Orchestral Series will combine the latest music with works by masters of earlier periods. Oscar Jockel will perform the demanding, but historically traditional dual role of composer-conductor.

Despite his young age, he has managed to captivate audiences, critics, as well as the world’s leading conductors. He has been conducting assistant to Kirill Petrenko, the Chief Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, and demonstrated his professional qualities with the Prague Philharmonia in the past.

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.
