The Bennewitz Quartet is one of the top ensembles on the international chamber music scene. After winning two prestigious competitions – Osaka Chamber Music and Festa 2005 and Prémio Paolo Borciani, Italy 2008, they quickly gained the acclaim of the critics. In 2019 the Bennewitz Quartet won the Classic Prague Award for the Best Chamber Music Performance of the Year. In the 2023/24 season the Bennewitz Quartet returns to numerous stages in Europe (Stuttgart, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Linz, Bilbao) and will make its debut in Klagenfurt, Darmstadt and Duisburg. The quartet will tour again in the United States and Canada, and will continue various concert projects in Czech Republic including its engagement at Dvořák’s Prague Festival. Since 1998 the quartet bears the name of the violinist and director of a music conservatory in Prague, Antonín Bennewitz (1833-1926) who contributed greatly to the establishment of the Czech violin school. The most significant musicians who count among his disciples are Otakar Ševčík and František Ondříček and above all Karel Hoffman, Josef Suk and Oskar Nedbal who, under Bennewitz’s influence, formed the famous Bohemian Quartet.

Ruth Reinhardt, “an elegant, versatile and committed conductor in the search for expressive colors” (Scherzo), helms this program, which includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 80 —too often overlooked, this turbulent music turns storms to sunlight. The winds sparkle in Hindemith’s enduring Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber; this music was originally sketched as a ballet, and its four distinctive movements maintain a catchy sense of choreography. (Weber gets a chance to speak for himself at the top of the program, through the Overture to his fantastical opera Oberon.) Beethoven’s expressive Third Piano Concerto ranks as some of his finest music; Alessio Bax, whom Gramophone considers to be “clearly among the most remarkable young pianists now before the public,” opens with this gem.

Bernard Labadie marks his first performances with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in this program of life-affirming energy, grandeur and strength with works by three giants of Western classical music, all written in the influential last decade of the 18th century. A pair of glorious and masterful operatic overtures open each half of the program, both written by Mozart within weeks of one another in the fall of 1791, and just a couple of months before his untimely death. This quartet from Barcelona has an exciting edge to their sound, which they will bring to masterpieces from three centuries. Vera Martinez Mehner, the powerhouse first violin, will have a big night. Today's concert is the last of three concerts where the Arild Quartet plays all the string quartets by the German romantic master Johannes Brahms. A quartet by Haydn and Mozart is also played at each concert.

Here, a new musical style emerged that, compared to the Italian Baroque and Rococo of the past, was less elaborate and more simple and expressive. All the music we know and practice today as "classical music" has its roots there.

This programme explores some of the great works by Mozart & Haydn. ‘Sturm und Drang’ or ‘Storm and Stress’ was a proto-Romantic movement in German literature and music in the mid to late 18th century.It saw composers expressing the extremes of emotion within their compositions. A student of the late Leon Fleisher, the Berlin-based pianist brings a “sense of immense majesty, tempered by gentleness and quiet grace” (Washington Post) to a program that features Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana, Op. 16—one of the major piano works of the Romantic era, in which the composer sought to capture the contrasting sides of his own character, as well as the essence of his future wife, Clara Wieck.

Join us for this wonderful programme, exploring some of the great works by Mozart & Haydn. ‘Sturm und Drang’ or ‘Storm and Stress’ was a proto-Romantic movement in German literature and music in the mid to late 18th century.It saw composers expressing the extremes of emotion within their compositions. Much like other artists of the period, both Mozart & Haydn wrote works that feel within this movements aesthetics.

Named after the fine English composer and violist Frank Bridge, the history of the Bridge Quartet , formed over thirty years ago , has been sprinkled with “discoveries” of English quartet repertoire. They are completing their recordings of the full cycle of Yorkshire-born Arnold Cooke’s (1906–2005) Quartets. They willl premiere his work at Manchester Chamber Concerts Society with Quartet No. 4, a piece that is by turns solidly constructed, inventively contrapuntal, lyrical, and energetic.

Founded in 1968 as an artistic outlet for the recording industry’s most gifted musicians, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) has spent the past six decades burnishing its reputation as “one of the world’s great chamber orchestras” (KUSC Classical FM) and as a major cultural force in Los Angeles. Since 2019, the esteemed Spanish conductor Jaime Martín has served as LACO’s Music Director, as well as Chief Conductor of both the Melbourne Symphony and Ireland’s RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Join us for Mendelssohn’s zesty Italian Symphony, a piece evoking sun-drenched hills and feasting al fresco inspired by the 22-year-old composer’s grand tour of Europe. A Haydn symphony opens the concert, a piece inspired by a trip to London. The “father of the symphony” spent his happiest days there, basking in celebrity and even finding romance. Haydn’s London Symphony mingles grandeur and rustic verve. Guest conductor Earl Lee makes his Atlanta Symphony Orchestra debut. Also on the program, principal oboist Elizabeth Tiscione rolls out the artistry in Françaix’s The Flower Clock, a picturesque oboe concerto evoking brightly-hued flowers that bloom according to the time of day.

Legend has it that as a child, Mozart was terrified by the sheer volume and force of the trumpet’s sound. At the apex of his genius, however, he included a pair of them in his final, immortal “Jupiter” Symphony, where they are used to thrilling effect. This program joins that work with his 40th Symphony — darker and more poignant in mood. Star trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth brings the soul of the trumpet — brilliant and delicately burnished — to our stage in two luminous showpieces. Helseth captures Haydn’s delightful good humor and Bent Sørenson’s playful music in a concerto that was composed especially for her.

Delyana Lazarova, winner of the inaugural Siemens Hallé International Conductor’s Competition, begins this concert with Debussy’s sensuous evocation of the poet Mallarmé’s dreams and desires of a faun. Delyana then directs the massed forces of the Hallé, Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, a rising RNCM star and the stunning mezzo-soprano, Hanna Hipp, in Lili Boulanger’s ominous setting of Psalm 130, widely believed to be a reaction to the outbreak of World War One. Sheffield treasure, Darius Battiwalla, pulls out all the stops in music by Saint-Saёns. His first published organ work, Fantaisie, has two contrasting movements: one, full of elegance and charm and the other, strong and confident. The concert concludes with his monumental, fascinatingly-textured “Organ” Symphony.
