In Lo speziale (The Apothecary), the librettist Goldoni demonstrates his belief that ‘comedy was created to correct vice and ridicule bad behaviour’.  Haydn exploits the satire with characteristic wit and colour, and feasts on the comic potential of the four entangled characters.  Sempronio, a work-shy apothecary, spends his time with the newspapers, attempting to sift reality from fake news, but is readily distracted by the charms of his pretty ward Grilletta.  But her fluttering eyes are cast on his shy assistant, Mengone, a youth with little understanding of chemistry who somehow concocts a powerful laxative, to be praised in one of Haydn’s jauntiest arias.  Meanwhile Grilletta is also wooed by the foppish Volpino, whose mastery of disguise leads to a finale of delightful silliness.

The Viano String Quartet was the First Prize Winner of the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition and is the String Quartet-in-Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music. Formed in 2015 at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, the quartet has performed all over the world in venues such as Wigmore Hall, Place Flagey, Izumi Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, and Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

As the May Festival enters a new era of artistic innovation and collaboration, it seems only fitting to begin the 2024 Festival with a work symbolizing creation. Few works of sacred music are more cheerful and joyous than Haydn's The Creation. It exemplifies Haydn’s own personal faith and optimism in humanity, as well as his profound belief in music’s ability to edify, uplift and inspire. Through the inspired use of soloists, full chorus and orchestra, The Creation depicts and celebrates the creation of the earth, and all of its flora and fauna, as narrated in Biblical passages from Genesis and Psalms, as well as from John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

Ruth Crawford Seeger composed Suite for Wind Quintet in 1952, 16 years since writing any significant compositions and a year before she died from cancer. Principal Cello Julie Albers takes the spotlight in Franz Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto in D, the second of two cello concertos composed twenty years apart. Written in dedication to and in competition with his close friend Mieczysław Weinberg, Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 10 will be performed in an arrangement for Chamber Symphony.

After an interval, the evening will conclude with Richard Strauss's "Aus Italien", a symphonic fantasy that transports listeners through various Italian landscapes, culminating in the vibrant folk life of Naples. This piece holds a special place in Maestro Muti's repertoire, marking a return to a work he performed with the BRSO forty years ago.

Opera Holland Park is thrilled to announce the return of the acclaimed "Opera in Song 2024" series, curated by the esteemed baritone Julien Van Mellaerts and pianist Dylan Perez. This remarkable event, now in its fourth year, promises an enriching lineup of recitals featuring both established and emerging talents in the world of opera. The series is set to unfold with three recitals, a public masterclass, and a special concert celebrating the 80th birthday of opera legend Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

The series kicks off on June 20, 2024, with a masterclass led by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa at 3:30 pm, offering a rare glimpse into the meticulous preparation and technical prowess required for opera performance. Dame Kiri, renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Strauss, and Verdi, will share her invaluable insights and experiences with the 2024 cohort of Opera Holland Park Young Artists.

The same day at 7:30 pm, the series will host a Gala Concert in honor of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's 80th birthday. This special event will feature performances by alumni of the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation, showcasing the talents of artists such as Thomas Atkins, Julieth Lozano, Madison Nonoa, Phillip Rhodes, Madeleine Boreham, Samson Setu, and Julien Van Mellaerts, accompanied by Gary Matthewman on piano. Attendees of the gala concert will also have the opportunity to join a post-show drinks reception with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, with tickets priced at £125.

The series continues with "Ballads and Legends" on July 18, 2024, at 7:30 pm, where mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston, baritone Julien Van Mellaerts, and pianist Dylan Perez will explore the theme of the sea through songs and duets. The program includes the world premiere of Oded Zehavi’s "Songs of the Sea," featuring lyrics by poets from around the globe.

On July 20, 2024, at 3:00 pm, the "Frauenliebe und -Leben" recital will take place, featuring Benjamin Appl, Harriet Burns, and Ian Tindale. This performance will delve into Robert Schumann’s song cycle, portraying the life stages of a woman through voice and piano.

The series concludes on July 21, 2024, at 6:00 pm with "Comedy and Cabaret," an evening of music, satire, and celebration led by Nicky Spence, Dylan Perez, and the Opera Holland Park Young Artists. This closing event promises a mix of familiar and peculiar pieces, including works by Noel Coward, Stephen Sondheim, and more.

Grieg’s song cycle Haugtussa (The Mountain Maid) incorporates Norwegian folk melodies into its story about Veslemøy, a young shepherd girl who struggles with the burdens of having psychic powers, while Haydn’s cantata Arianna a Naxos takes listeners through Cretan Princess Arianna’s grief, wrath, and despair after she’s abandoned by her lover, Theseus. András Schiff’s devoted fans will turn out for whatever he decides to play or conduct, and this evening they’re in for not one treat but three. As the TSO’s Artist in Residence, Cuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa will perform TWO concertos, juxtaposing classic Haydn with the recent Divided by Jessie Montgomery. The composer describes Divided as a response to the social and political unrest of the recent past, the sense of helplessness people feel in a world that seems in constant crisis. By contrast, Brahms’ sunny second symphony closes the program, composed in the summer of 1877 surrounded by the beauty and quiet of the Austrian countryside.
