With the death of his patron Prince Nikolaus Esterházy in 1790, Haydn became a free agent, and Johann Peter Salomon seized the opportunity to bring Europe’s most famous composer to Soho. Haydn's music already dominated the fashionable Hanover Square Rooms, especially after the death of the London-based Johann Christian Bach (youngest son of Johann Sebastian), whose Symphony in G minor opens the concert's second half.

Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 2 was premiered at Hanover Square in 1784. A decade later, he embarked on his second trip to London, and from this period come two of his best-known symphonies, earning nicknames through their popularity: the "Military" (No. 100), and the "London" (No. 104).

The English Baroque Soloists have this music in their blood, and their use of period instruments casts these works in an entirely fresh light. They are joined by cellist Christophe Coin, making his MCO debut. Historically-informed performance specialist Peter Whelan returns to direct after a “thrilling” (The Times), "dazzling" (The Observer) and “unbeatable” (Scherzo) debut with the orchestra in 2024.

Unusually we’re playing just the one piece for our season ending concert this year, but what a piece of music it is — Haydn’s Creation!

“The Creation” is an oratorio written by Joseph Haydn in 1797 and 1798, and considered by many to be one of his masterpieces. It depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as narrated in the Book of Genesis and is scored for soprano, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and orchestra. Altogether this musical feast is around 2 hours long.

Joseph Haydn’s »Creation« can be described as the most important oratorio of the Classical period. Together with George Frideric Handel’s oratorios, it had an impact right up to the High Romantic period. The three-part work sets the biblical account of the creation of the world to music in a tremendous wealth of colour, depicting a paradisiacal world with an impressive abundance of life. The choir responds to the narrative with songs of praise, of which »Die Himmel erzählen« has become one of the most popular vocal works.

Each year from January until June, about 60 young people meet at the Rudolfinum to create a beautiful joint concert under the guidance of players from the Czech Philharmonic (and with support from their teachers). This time, the project participants are from the regions of Hradec Králové, Moravian Silesia, Pilsen, Zlín, and Prague. The charismatic conductor Petr Altrichter will lead the concluding concert.

While concertos often reveal the immense talent of the soloist they are intended for, the Concentus Musicus Wien can now count on the virtuoso breath of David Guerrier on trumpet and horn in this delightful program. Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3 is followed by an exuberant and concise masterpiece, Haydn's Trumpet Concerto. Celebrated for their “multifaceted artistry” and “brilliantly idiomatic” programming (New York Times), the Poiesis Quartet is the winner of the 2026 Cleveland Quartet Award and the First Prize and Commission Prize recipients of the 2025 Banff International String Quartet Competition. They will perform works from the canon by Joseph Haydn and Sergei Prokofiev alongside contemporary works by Sky Macklay, Chickasaw classical composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, and a newly commissioned work by Kevin Lau.

When Mozart referred to Joseph Haydn as the "father, guide, and friend" of his string quartets, he was alluding to the great model of the Quartets Op. 33, which were printed at the end of 1781 and with which Haydn had ushered in a new era for the genre. The six String Quartets Op. 33 are considered the beginning of Viennese Classicism; they are also called the "Russian Quartets" because of their dedication to Grand Duke Paul of Russia. At the beginning of Quartet No. 3, the first violin enters with a kind of bird call over pulsating C major chords, from which the nickname "Bird Quartet" derives.

During his visits to London between 1791 and 1795, Haydn found himself greatly inspired by the numerous performances of Handel’s works he attended. He was particularly moved by the grandeur of Messiah and Israel in Egypt which sparked his desire to create an oratorio of his own. Before Haydn returned to Vienna, violinist Johann Peter Salomon presented him with an anonymous English libretto which had supposedly been intended for Handel half a century earlier. The text – which draws from the Book of Genesis, John Milton’s epic Poem Paradise Lost (1667), and the Book of Psalms – resonated deeply with Haydn’s devout Catholic faith.

Tempora mutantur — the nickname of Haydn’s Symphony No. 64 — takes its name from the Latin adage, “The times change, and we change with them.” Inspired by this reflection, Finnish conductor and violinist Pekka Kuusisto presents a dynamic program featuring former Mead Composer-in-Residence Anna Clyne’s Sound and Fury alongside folk- and dance-inspired works by Grieg and Rautavaara. A friendship developed between Joseph Joachim, the celebrated violinist, and Johannes Brahms, the quintessential composer, characterized by both artistic admiration and critical tension. Joachim, immediately captivated by Brahms's music, soon became his most important confidant and interpreter. Their letters reveal a complex interplay of admiration, loyalty, and sometimes wounded pride—a delicate web of mutual respect and high expectations. However, from 1884 onward, the friendship between Johannes Brahms and Joseph Joachim was no longer as untroubled as in its early years, for Brahms had sided with Joachim's wife in their divorce proceedings, and since then, the once warm relationship had cooled—marked by expressions and gestures of reserve, coupled with the quiet pride of two artists. Now, however, Brahms's "Double Concerto" for violin and cello was intended to be a sign of reconciliation—a musical dialogue that sought to bridge the gap between them.

Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Seasons was written shortly after the first successful performances of its sister work, The Creation. The two works have a close spiritual relationship. While The Creation depicts the creation of the world in the course of the Genesis account, The Seasons is about the existence of the world in the course of the year, about the experience of divine creation in the cyclical growth and decay of nature.

Then, journey into the heart of Eastern Europe with Borys Lyatoshynsky Suite on Ukrainian Themes—a rich tapestry of folk melodies and bold harmonies that sing with national pride. Finally, sink into the youthful lyricism of Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 4, a charming early gem that already hints at the emotional depth and elegance that made him a Romantic powerhouse.

From elegant salons to bustling boulevards, this program captures the essence of each metropolis through vivid and inventive works. Francis Poulenc’s witty and urbane Sextet bursts with Parisian flair, while Darius Milhaud’s La création du monde blends jazz and classical idioms in a bold, rhythmically charged vision of the world’s beginning, inspired by African mythology and the energy of 1920s Paris. Balancing the French exuberance is Haydn’s London Trio No. 3, a piece that is piece is elegant, buoyant, and full of wit, which he composed during his visits to England.

Sarasota Orchestra closes its season with a program of works that left the door open for more. No one is certain why Schubert never finished his Eighth Symphony, but the two movements that he did compose remain among his most beloved. Julia Perry’s Short Piece for Orchestra was the first work by a woman of color to be performed by the New York Philharmonic; Perry’s life and career were cut short at age 55. In his Symphony No. 45, Haydn sent a not-so subtle message to his employer that the orchestra was ready for a break. This symphony has delighted audiences for over 250 years and concludes our 76th season with a chuckle as each musician exits the stage in a dramatic send-off.

Hungarian-American pianist Julia Hamos presents a program that bridges centuries and styles and features two of the most important composers from Hungary. Beginning with a selection from Kurtág’s Játékok, she navigates through Haydn’s Sonata in E minor, Ligeti’s Études (Arc-en-ciel, Der Zauberlehrling, Fanfares), and Mozart’s Sonata in A minor, culminating in Schumann’s beloved Fantasie in C Major. Hamos’s adventurous spirit and compelling artistry promise an evening of compelling musical exploration.

Written for Baroque orchestra, Stacy Garrop’s Handel-inspired concert opener features bursts of musical color and leads perfectly into Music for the Royal Fireworks. When Ton Koopman plays the organ, anything is possible. Expect the highest level of ornamentation, verve and imagination, and fingers so nimble you wouldn't expect from a musician who's just turned 80. And what else can you expect? Magnificent music by Handel and Haydn, Koopman's secret star. "In Holland, Haydn is much more popular than Mozart because he's creative and witty," says Ton Koopman, the early music specialist both on the keyboard and on the conductor's podium. Haydn is also more difficult to play; you have to practice properly. "But it's beautiful music, and we have to promote Haydn. He deserves it!" Thus, his Symphony No. 80 is on the program, a work of the greatest wit, at times bizarrely humorous, always full of contrasts – a typical Koopman symphony. In this "Baroque+" program, the ever-so-sharp Dutchman contrasts Haydn with Handel: Handel's concertos are also virtuosic and original – and, with Ton Koopman at the organ, of a truly special, agile quality.

Khatia Buniatishvili is famous for her highly emotional playing and for fully illuminating the inner dramas of the works she interprets. The program of her concert with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields provides the perfect setting for this. Even the opening works by Jean Sibelius, his famous "Valse triste" and the ethereal "Scene with Cranes," are taken from incidental music. Joseph Haydn's Farewell Symphony tells its own unique drama: the resourceful composer supposedly conceived the work specifically to subtly hint to his employer that the orchestra musicians would like to finally take a vacation. And there's no doubt that the solo concerts of the brilliant opera composer Mozart also contain a fair amount of drama.

Pianist Khatia Buniatishvili will join forces once again with Academy of St Martin in the Fields for a concert in Hamburg’s stunning Elbphilharmonie directed by Tomo Keller. The concert will feature Khatia performing Mozart’s dark and stormy Piano Concerto no. 20 contrasting with his bright and spirited Piano Concerto no. 23, which were both released as a recording with ASMF in 2024.

Dresden-born conductor Romely Pfund was one of the first women in Germany to be appointed General Music Director of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic in 1987. To mark her 50th stage anniversary, she will conduct a celebratory concert at her most recent permanent venue, the Lübeck Theater, where she served as tuition director and conductor until last season. The program includes three of her favorite pieces, one of which is by one of her mentors, Leonard Bernstein.

Canadian Larysa Kuzmenko composed Fantasy on a Theme by Beethoven in celebration of his birthday. Haydn’s high-spirited and dramatic Cello Concerto No. 1 remained undiscovered for two centuries until its chance 1961 find at the Czech National Library. Fittingly, Grieg’s four charming Symphonic Dances, inspired by Norwegian folk, played a key role in formalizing Norway’s national identity.

"Work and structure" were the most important factors that sustained Wolfgang Herrndorf during his three-year cancer illness. In his blog of the same name, the author of the best-selling novel "Tschick" documented and commented on his experiences and thoughts about death. Following a concert stream in 2022, these final words can now be experienced live as a reading with music – at the Hamburg International Music Festival, which, fittingly, will be held under the theme "The End" in 2026.

Three spectacular soloists grace this program that follows a thread of musical styles from Baroque to early Classical. Co-concertmaster Nathan Olson is front-and-center in Bach’s Violin Concerto, whose poignant Adagio is one of his most sublime creations, with the solo violin exquisitely embroidering the underlying bass line. Our principal trumpet does the honors in Haydn’s tour de force concerto, traversing the instrument’s registers by leaps and bounds, but also bringing out its singing qualities. Mozart’s festive “Haffner” Symphony ends in a romping rondo, that Mozart said had to be played “as fast as possible.” In a dramatic concert aria, Kathryn Henry calls down the wrath of the gods on her perfidious lover. Hell hath no fury…

The season concludes in grand fashion with Joseph Haydn’s The Creation, presented in collaboration with the Ottawa Choral Society, celebrating its 85th anniversary.

Widely regarded as a masterpiece of the Classical period, Haydn’s oratorio draws on a German translation of Milton’s Paradise Lost. Its 1799 premiere in Vienna was a sensation, and the work continues to inspire audiences with its sweeping vision and luminous music.

Ahead of a tour together across Europe, the remarkable piano duo brothers Arthur and Lucas Jussen will join forces once again with Academy of St Martin in the Fields for a concert in London directed by Tomo Keller . The concert will feature Bach’s sprightly Double Keyboard Concerto No. 2 in C major and Mozart’s beautiful and playful Piano Concerto for three pianos in F major, written for the Countess Maria Antonia Lodron and her two daughters. The Concerto was later rearranged by Mozart himself and another pianist, incorporating the music for the Countess’ youngest daughter Giuseppa into the two other parts, which is the version the Jussen brothers will perform.

Introduced by Erkki-Sven Tüür’s movements of the same name, which make excellent use of the string orchestra’s infinite textural potential, the musical arc stretches from Suite No. 3 from Respighi’s »Danze ed Arie antiche« – a combination of historical elements with the colorful splendor of the 20th century – to Haydn’s Symphony in F sharp minor.

Following CPE Bach’s energetic Symphony in B-flat Major, we showcase LA Phil cellist David Garrett in Hadyn’s beloved Cello Concerto in D Major. The program continues with Schubert’s sparkling Symphony No. 5 and Carl Maria von Weber’s landmark “Invitation to the Dance,” a piece historian John Warrack called “the first and still perhaps most brilliant and poetic example of the Romantic concert waltz.”

It was England's first major violin concerto. It quickly became clear that it was by no means banal or purely artistic – after all, in his Opus 61, performed here by the British composer Anthony Marwood, Edward Elgar had laid bare nothing less than his innermost being. Even the Finn Jean Sibelius, whose value has long since been fully recognized after initial public skepticism, famously didn't create a single banal bar. His last symphony, premiered in the 1920s, is, like its predecessors, dark and profoundly serious, emotionally gripping, and, with just one movement, formally revolutionary. The second half of the concert, conducted by Anna Rakitina, opens with a cheerful work by the early Haydn: his Symphony
"Morning" features a beautiful sunrise.
