Camile Saint-Saëns’ adventurous, final symphony has been engrained in popular culture, with themes from its memorable triumphant last movement appearing in pop songs and as the main theme in the film Babe. Dedicated to Franz Liszt, the “Organ” symphony led fellow composer Charles Gounod to hail Saint-Saëns as “the French Beethoven.” LA Phil Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour leads Maurice Ravel’s virtuosic violin showpiece, and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Music Director Louis Langrée teams up again with acclaimed composer Jonathan Bailey Holland for a world premiere symphony.

Bach’s timeless and sublime musical voice takes the spotlight on the first half of this program—with the orchestral suite that features the popular “Air on the G String” and a violin concerto featuring the LA Phil’s Principal Concertmaster. Conductor Masaaki Suzuki leads Mendelssohn’s sunny and cheerful Fourth Symphony, which was inspired by the composer’s time in the Italian countryside.

The LA Phil’s revered Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour takes the spotlight with the wonderful, tuneful Violin Concerto by Antonín Dvořák, a work that comes right out of the models of Brahms and Beethoven. With extraordinary melodies that transcend ordinary feelings, Bruckner achieved the greatest success in his lifetime with the Seventh Symphony, and it remains his best-known symphony today. Conducting it is one of the masters of our time, Philippe Jordan, head of the Vienna State Opera.

Pianist Sunwook Kim—praised for his “keen mind” and “pearly virtuosity” by The Times of London—joins principal players and section musicians from the Los Angeles Philharmonic for two quartets. First is Mozart’s Piano Quartet No. 2, which is vibrantly cheerful despite its technical demands on the performers. By contrast, Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 3 abounds in the kind of Romantic emotional turmoil that can only come from unrequited love.

Tchaikovsky's Ukrainian heritage comes center stage in his Second Symphony, chock full of the country's folk songs. Our soloist comes from the LA Philharmonic in Barber's virtuosic violin concerto after the program opens with a delightful ode to our nighttime companion in Dai Wei's The Dancing Moonlight sponsored by the New Music Society. Hearing Mozart’s majestic music under the summer night sky is a prized Bowl tradition, especially with the effervescent Nicholas McGegan on the podium, plus the LA Phil’s own Principal Concertmaster!

Mozart Under the Stars at the Hollywood Bowl

The Bakersfield Symphony is joined by Martin Chalifour, concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, for this spectacular concert event.  Chalifour will open the concert with a virtuosic performance of Dvořák’s beautiful violin concerto.  In the second half of the concert, Maestro Stilian Kirov will take us through Beethoven’s classically energetic and moving 7th Symphony.

There’s simply nothing like listening to Mozart’s music under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl. Featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s concertmaster and principal viola as wonderful soloists, Mozart-lover Dudamel leads the Sinfonia concertante and the two G-minor symphonies: the stormy 25th that was written by Mozart at only 17 and the 40th, full of urgent passion written near the end of the composer’s life.
