The Hobby Center is thrilled to announce the ExxonMobil Discovery Series: Exploration of Sensation, a captivating event set to take place from November 5th to November 7th, 2024, at Zilkha Hall. This educational series is designed to immerse 5th graders and their teachers from Houston public schools in the world of performing arts, free of charge, as part of the center's commitment to education outreach.

Exploration of Sensation is a contemporary dance concert presented by the Houston Contemporary Dance Company, focusing on our perceptions and interactions with the world around us. The program features "Viola" by Thai American choreographer Keerati Jinakunwiphat, exploring the impact of weather, daylight shifts, and seasonal changes on our mental and emotional well-being. This piece was developed in collaboration with HCDC’s behavioral consultant, Dr. Rachel Tova Winer, who will share insights into the role of mental health in the creative process during the event.

Additionally, the program includes "Sincerely Yours" by Norbert De La Cruz III, a piece reflecting on our emotional responses to relationships, and "Sensorium" by Jack Wolff, a work that delves into the five senses. These performances aim to engage, entertain, and educate 5th graders, enriching their learning experience and sense of belonging through dance, music, and theater.

The 2024-2025 school year marks an exciting time for the Hobby Center, as it continues to offer a diverse range of free educational field trips to Zilkha Hall, aligning with TEKS standards to benefit Houston's 5th grade students.

This initiative is supported by the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Mid-America Arts Alliance, highlighting the community's investment in arts education. The Houston Contemporary Dance Company, known for its inclusiveness and diversity, brings high-caliber performances to the city, contributing to Houston's vibrant performing arts scene.

Always one of the most fun performances of the year, this year's Margaret Alkek Williams Jubilee of Dance will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Stanton Welch as our esteemed Artistic Director. The evening will begin with highlights of Welch's work created in Houston over the past 20 seasons. Continuing to spotlight the Company's strength as an eden for choreographic growth, the evening will also include three new ballets by Soloist Jacquelyn Long, Demi-Soloist Jack Wolff and Corps de Ballet dancer Jindallae Bernard. To close the night, audiences will enjoy a world premiere one-act from Welch himself, set to one of the most popular concertos ever written, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto, No. 1.
