Feast your eyes and ears, as fashion and song intersect in this lieder recital like no other. Turning the defiant mindset of the 1920s New Objectivity movement towards today’s social attitudes, Rowan Hellier explores the role of symbolism and sensuality in the modern female identity. Her programme unites music by Rita Strohl, Kurt Weill and Cathy Berberian with outfits created by stage and costume designer Rebekka Dornhege Reyes.

Soprano Golda Schultz is among the world’s most celebrated opera singers. For her International Artist Series debut, she will collaborate with her regular pianist partner Jonathan Ware in this revelatory collection of songs exploring several overlooked worlds of women composers, from the height of the Romantic Era to the present day. The program has been called “a love-letter to women in music” exploring themes of love, nature, folklore and belief – all from a distinctly female perspective – in songs by Nadia Boulanger, Emilie Mayer, Rebecca Clarke and Clara Schumann, and a new three-song cycle called “This Be Her Verse” by Kathleen Tagg and Lila Palmer.

South African soprano Golda Schultz has been gracing the stage of the world’s greatest opera houses—from the Metropolitan Opera to the Vienna State Opera. Equally at home in leading operatic roles as she is as a soloist with the world’s foremost orchestras and in the most venerated recital halls, she has quickly become a leading voice in a new generation of star singers. For her Princeton University Concerts debut, she brings the extraordinary warmth of her voice to a program hailed as “a love-letter to women in music” exploring themes of love, nature, folklore and belief from a distinctly female perspective. Discussing the program’s curation, she shares: “Emilie Mayer, whose music was never recorded, was a genius on the level with Beethoven, but she was forgotten the day after she died in 1883. Nadia Boulanger became one of the greatest pedagogues with a touch that defined American culture. Even when we forget these women, what they’ve done still remains.”

Every Carnegie Hall debut is a notable event, and recitals in the intimate Weill Recital Hall can be especially powerful for artist and audience alike. Simon Bode is an acclaimed tenor whose “voice radiates a charisma and intensity that requires no reinforcement” (Bachtrack), and in this recital debut he performs a program of 19th-century art song and opera, including works by Wagner, Duparc, Liszt, and Wolf.
