This special event, part of a series of fifty performances commemorating the quartet's illustrious career, is set to take place on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at 7 pm in the iconic Royce Hall.

The Kronos Quartet, founded nearly 50 years ago by violinist David Harrington, has redefined the boundaries of the string quartet. With David Harrington on violin, alongside John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Paul Wiancko (cello), the quartet has become a beacon of innovation, commissioning over 1,000 works and collaborating with an array of composers and musicians from across the globe. Their repertoire, vast and culturally rich, addresses contemporary issues and explores a wide spectrum of cultural expressions.

This performance, titled "KRONOS Five Decades," promises to be a reflection of the quartet's storied legacy, showcasing their commitment to pushing the limits of the string quartet genre. The event is supported by generous contributions from Fariba Ghaffari and the Royce Center Circle Endowment.

Founded at a time when the form was largely centered on long-established, Western European traditions, Kronos has been at the forefront of revolutionizing the string quartet into a living art form that responds to the people and issues of our time.

Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Sam Green (The Weather Underground), in collaboration with Emmy Award®-winning writer and editor Joe Bini (Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, Grizzly Man), takes the stage with the legendary classical music group Kronos Quartet to create a “live documentary” that chronologically unfolds the quartet’s groundbreaking, continent-spanning, multi-decade career. Wildly creative and experimental in form, A Thousand Thoughts is a meditation on music itself—the act of listening closely to music, the experience of feeling music deeply, and the power that music has to change the world.
