It has been called the symphony of symphonies – Beethoven’s Fifth. Perhaps the most frequently performed work in the classical repertoire. This is music that defies indifference, seemingly telling a story of a journey from darkness to light, of a struggle that leads to triumph. More than any other work, the “Fifth” embodies the Beethoven myth: the solitary figure confronting fate, fighting, and ultimately claiming his freedom. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by young Finnish conductor Kristian Sallinen, who has been described as an exceptional talent.

The progressive 20th-century Polish Composer Witold Lutosławski was admired for his avant-garde works but he was also capable of creating immediately appealing music. His Little Suite of 1950, with its infectious energy and folk-inspired themes, has since become a popular concert opener. A century earlier, Lutosławski’s compatriot Chopin was considered a radical in his own Romantic fashion and his youthful Second Piano Concerto is an unashamed showpiece for the soloist who’s centre stage at all times to dazzle the audience with light-fingered lyricism. The effervescent Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu takes up the challenge.

Tchaikovsky never did anything by halves, and he poured all his heartache, his sorrow and his matchless gift for melody into a final symphony like no other. Don’t be misled by the name: ‘Pathétique’ means ‘full of feelings’ and when Krzysztof Urbański conducts the Warsaw Philharmonic, that’s exactly what they’ll bring – as well as glowing colours and some of the greatest tunes even Tchaikovsky ever composed.

These superb Polish musicians are always a big hit at Cadogan Hall; tonight they share a lost masterpiece by the postwar Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz and join pianist Alexandra Dariescu in the teenage Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto – true romance, played with love. Since the flute of the 'Faun', music has breathed differently , said Pierre Boulez, referring to the new and beguilingly floating world of sound that made musical history in France at the end of the 19th century with the premiere of Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune . Decades later, his compatriot Albert Roussel composed the ballet Bacchus et Ariane and shaped the plot according to the old Ariadne myth with music full of unbridled energy and an overwhelming rush of sound.

After a fiery overture by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, this concert centers on two of classical music’s greatest voices. While at its core an elegant and charming Classical-era composition, Beethoven’s second piano concerto includes delightful and innovative surprises that harken to his later Romantic roots. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, on the other hand, is Romantic through and through. This orchestral masterwork is teeming with achingly beautiful melodies, luscious orchestral colors, and vivid emotions.

Lutosławski’s energetic Little Suite for Symphony Orchestra espouses Polish folk tunes, while Borodin’s colorful Symphony No. 2 evokes the exuberance of Russian folk dances.

In continued support and nurturing of young soloists, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields performs with three exceptional soloists from the Orpheum Foundation, offering a space where young soloists can foster imperative musical encounters and providing a platform for those to build a career. This concert features violinist Seohyun Kim, viola player Sao Soulex Lariviere and pianist Eva Gevorgyan in a concert celebrating works by Mozart, Caroline Shaw and Bacewicz.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields present a stunning and varied programme of works by female composers, including a World Premiere from Eleanor Alberga, her Symphony No. 2 written for ASMF. The concert’s finale is with violinist Elena Urioste, who with ‘her airy, silvery tone and fine filigree detail’ (The Arts Desk) will perform Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 1. The concerto in D Major, which despite its reference to Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in the violin’s solo entrance and references throughout, is distinctly Price’s own style and launches into new musical ideas with the last movement ending the evening on a flourish.

Tchaikovsky may well have agreed. He wrote his Violin Concerto on holiday by Lake Geneva with the young student he hoped would premiere it, and poured equal parts emotion and virtuosity into his fiercely difficult and beautiful score. This afternoon it’s in the hands of exceptional violinist Lisa Batiashvili, whose last performance with the Philharmonia was acclaimed as ‘compelling from the very first bar’ (The Guardian).

In declining physical and mental health, Tchaikovsky struggled with profound inner turmoil while composing his intensely introspective and emotionally charged Sixth Symphony. Using music as an outlet for his anguish, longing, and profound despair, he poured his soul into a work that is as far-reaching as it is personal. His death just nine days after its premiere only added weight to this defining work of the Romantic period. One of the many legends that surround the work is that Tchaikovsky’s brother Modest came up with the name "Pathétique" which in his native Russian suggests “impassioned suffering.” Whether or not the composer acquiesced to this christening before his sudden death, it is uncannily suitable for the devastating psychological drama the symphony lays bare. In the hands of Jaime Martín, time-worn scores like Tchaikovsky’s quickly turn into fresh, spellbinding moments, an ability which has quickly cemented him as a favorite guest collaborator of your Colorado Symphony.

In the 20th century, the nations of Central Europe experienced both glory and terror – and composers responded with music that blazes with energy and imaginative power. For LPO Principal Conductor Edward Gardner, it’s a source of pure inspiration, and tonight, in the first of two Phoenix Lands concerts, he shares his passion. Grażyna Bacewicz, who was born in Poland, was a violinist, pianist and composer who taught at various conservatoires and wrote stories and books – an all-rounder and important representative of Polish music. Her concerto for strings draws an arc from neo-baroque to neo-classic, but is unmistakably 20th century music.

Grażyna Bacewicz is not only one of Poland's greatest composers, she was also an outstanding violinist, serving as concertmaster of the Polish Radio Orchestra in the years before World War II and performing throughout Europe in the postwar period. A Romantic classic meets two 20th-century masterworks in a concert of widescreen orchestral drama. From its thunderous opening chords to its heartbreaking slow movement, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is an emotional tour de force. Ukraine-born Vadym Kholodenko joins the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Conductor Laureate Tadaaki Otaka. Framing the concerto are two orchestral showpieces: Bacewicz’s vibrant Concerto for String Orchestra – whose motoric outer movements contrast with a sublime Andante – and the daring invention of Lutosławski’s folk-inspired Concerto for Orchestra.

Professor of Music at Cal Poly Humboldt, Dr. Mineva has been hailed as a “vibrant and expressive performer” (New York Times). The season concludes with one of the monuments of classical music: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major. Beethoven himself fondly considered this symphony among his best works. The exquisite second movement was so popular that the audience demanded an encore at the premiere.

Light in all its colors is the focus of our spring symphony concert – in the month in which the trees glow in all shades of green: »In the beautiful month of May … «! Few symphonies are as radiant as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s so-called Italian Symphony, in which he musically processes his journey to Italy, just as he did with his trip to Scotland. However, the Italian Symphony is not a program symphony, but rather takes up the moods and attitude to life of the country south of the Alps and transforms them into music: there is the cheerful verve of the opening movement, the Sicilian furor of the final tarantella and the pastoral smile of the scherzo. And as a contrast: the evocation of a Good Friday procession, the pacing, the memory of beloved dead people – with only occasional rays of sunlight breaking through the clouds. This distant light is the main component of Pēteris Vasks dreamlike violin concerto Distant Light, which he wrote for Gidon Kremer towards the end of the 20th century. The violinist Vadim Gluzman, who has already made a breathtaking recording of the concerto, will be our guest again. The concert opens with the playful Concerto for Strings by Polish composer Graz˙yna Bacewicz – just made for our virtuoso string players!

Join BBC Radio 3 for a FREE lunchtime invitation concert with the Ulster Orchestra, featuring codes, variations and fresh musical perspectives on 08 May 2025 at the Ulster Hall, Belfast.

The programme opens with the Variations for Orchestra by Grażyna Bacewicz: a groundbreaking female composer, who studied composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger in the 1930s. She wrote it in 1957, and while its 8 variations aren’t based on a conventional melody, 3 motives standout for development In its opening section. Over the course of 10 minutes these are used to embrace a gamut of sound worlds and characters, with the composer’s well-documented humour amply on show.

The violist Lawrence Power is visiting OS again, and he is the soloist in Grazyna Bacewicz's Viola Concerto. Bacewicz was one of the most significant Polish composers of the 20th century, and although she is not heard that often in Denmark, she was one of the main names at the Musikhøst festival here in Odense in the mid-1990s. The concerto is divided into three movements – two lively ones and a beautiful, dark middle movement. There is a bittersweet note in the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that people have been struggling to describe for centuries. Is it the happiness in the depths? Or the melancholy in the sweetness? Parallel to Le nozze di Figaro, the Piano Concerto No. 22 is a work that has exactly that character tone and which the Norwegian pianist Christian Ihle Hadland takes on: gripping and dance-like - and not banal for a second. Elena Kats-Chernin's Dance of the Paper Umbrellas opens the program just as light-footed as Mozart. Franz Schubert's 4th Symphony is nicknamed "Tragic", but takes the audience on a dramatic, musically stirring journey. Grażyna Bacewicz's fast-paced overture for orchestra sets the stage. Two of the most romantic artistic souls are on the program when the young Danish pianist Gustav Piekut again visits the Odense Symphony Orchestra. This time we will hear his nimble fingers in Chopin's romantic masterpiece, the endlessly sonorous 2nd Piano Concerto in an evening that also offers Schumann's brave 4th Symphony, which in many ways set new standards for the symphony as an art form, as well as a powerful overture of the unfairly forgotten Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz.

Sergei Rachmaninov was born in imperial Russia, but he died in Beverly Hills, and his Symphonic Dances fuse the melancholy of exile with the rhythm, the glamour and the sheer verve of the jazz-age USA. Dream ballet? Showpiece for orchestra? Or simply the most personal symphony Rachmaninov never wrote? However you hear them, guest conductor Teresa Riveiro Böhm has made them the climax of a concert filled with powerful voices and dark poetry. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture gets things off to an electrifying start. Then BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Johanna Wallroth turns the leaves of the Richard Strauss songbook: miniature worlds of tenderness, melody and romance, perfectly suited to what one critic called the “pure magic” of her voice.

California Symphony’s Young American Composer-in-Residence (2023-26) Saad Haddad presents his second commission for the orchestra. 
Grażyna Bacewicz incorporates Polish folk themes in a piece that features intense moments of drama and a demanding and virtuosic lead role for piano, played here by internationally acclaimed pianist David Fung.
Tchaikovsky’s sixth and final symphony is also known as the Pathétique, but the composer originally called it the Passionate. Grand, sweeping, and with themes you’ll recognize from movies and pop culture, it’s one of the Russian melody master’s most popular and frequently performed works.

Celebrated for her “full, luxuriously toned upper range” (The Los Angeles Times), and “astonishing coloratura with radiant top notes” (Calgary Herald) particularly in the music of Bach and Handel, recent seasons have included performances with the New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Bach Collegium Japan, Wiener Akademie (Austria), NDR Hannover Radiophilharmonie (Germany), the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Early Music Festival, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Canada), Minnesota Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Mark Morris Dance Group, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue New York, The Choir and Orchestra of Trinity Wall Street, and Voices of Music. Future first guest conductor Maxim Emelyanychev leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's last symphony number 41. The addition "Jupiter" was added after the composer's death and is believed to refer to the Roman god of the same name, whose lightning can be heard in the opening chord of the first movement. German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt performs Grażyna Bacewicz's Second Cello Concerto and the program also includes Sergei Prokofiev's imaginative suite The Love for the Three Oranges .

The Tesla Quartet formed at the Julliard School in New York in 2008. From 2009-2012 they were the Graduate Quartet in Residence with the famed Takacs Quartet at the University of Colorado Boulder. They have won top prizes in several competitions, tour widely, and commissioned 12 new works during the Covid pandemic in 2020. They will perform the popular Haydn “Joke” Quartet, Opus 33, No. 2, and the Dvorak String Quartet No. 10, Opus 51, as well as introducing us to String Quartet No. 3 by Polish/Lithuanian composer Grazina Bacewicz (1909-1969).
