In declining physical and mental health, Tchaikovsky struggled with profound inner turmoil while composing his intensely introspective and emotionally charged Sixth Symphony. Using music as an outlet for his anguish, longing, and profound despair, he poured his soul into a work that is as far-reaching as it is personal. His death just nine days after its premiere only added weight to this defining work of the Romantic period. One of the many legends that surround the work is that Tchaikovsky’s brother Modest came up with the name "Pathétique" which in his native Russian suggests “impassioned suffering.” Whether or not the composer acquiesced to this christening before his sudden death, it is uncannily suitable for the devastating psychological drama the symphony lays bare. In the hands of Jaime Martín, time-worn scores like Tchaikovsky’s quickly turn into fresh, spellbinding moments, an ability which has quickly cemented him as a favorite guest collaborator of your Colorado Symphony.

A Romantic classic meets two 20th-century masterworks in a concert of widescreen orchestral drama. From its thunderous opening chords to its heartbreaking slow movement, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is an emotional tour de force. Ukraine-born Vadym Kholodenko joins the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Conductor Laureate Tadaaki Otaka. Framing the concerto are two orchestral showpieces: Bacewicz’s vibrant Concerto for String Orchestra – whose motoric outer movements contrast with a sublime Andante – and the daring invention of Lutosławski’s folk-inspired Concerto for Orchestra.

Professor of Music at Cal Poly Humboldt, Dr. Mineva has been hailed as a “vibrant and expressive performer” (New York Times). The season concludes with one of the monuments of classical music: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major. Beethoven himself fondly considered this symphony among his best works. The exquisite second movement was so popular that the audience demanded an encore at the premiere.

Light in all its colors is the focus of our spring symphony concert – in the month in which the trees glow in all shades of green: »In the beautiful month of May … «! Few symphonies are as radiant as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s so-called Italian Symphony, in which he musically processes his journey to Italy, just as he did with his trip to Scotland. However, the Italian Symphony is not a program symphony, but rather takes up the moods and attitude to life of the country south of the Alps and transforms them into music: there is the cheerful verve of the opening movement, the Sicilian furor of the final tarantella and the pastoral smile of the scherzo. And as a contrast: the evocation of a Good Friday procession, the pacing, the memory of beloved dead people – with only occasional rays of sunlight breaking through the clouds. This distant light is the main component of Pēteris Vasks dreamlike violin concerto Distant Light, which he wrote for Gidon Kremer towards the end of the 20th century. The violinist Vadim Gluzman, who has already made a breathtaking recording of the concerto, will be our guest again. The concert opens with the playful Concerto for Strings by Polish composer Graz˙yna Bacewicz – just made for our virtuoso string players!

Join BBC Radio 3 for a FREE lunchtime invitation concert with the Ulster Orchestra, featuring codes, variations and fresh musical perspectives on 08 May 2025 at the Ulster Hall, Belfast.

The programme opens with the Variations for Orchestra by Grażyna Bacewicz: a groundbreaking female composer, who studied composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger in the 1930s. She wrote it in 1957, and while its 8 variations aren’t based on a conventional melody, 3 motives standout for development In its opening section. Over the course of 10 minutes these are used to embrace a gamut of sound worlds and characters, with the composer’s well-documented humour amply on show.

The violist Lawrence Power is visiting OS again, and he is the soloist in Grazyna Bacewicz's Viola Concerto. Bacewicz was one of the most significant Polish composers of the 20th century, and although she is not heard that often in Denmark, she was one of the main names at the Musikhøst festival here in Odense in the mid-1990s. The concerto is divided into three movements – two lively ones and a beautiful, dark middle movement. Here, the contrast to the joie de vivre comes in the slow tempo, which carries more obscure feelings with it.

There is a bittersweet note in the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that people have been struggling to describe for centuries. Is it the happiness in the depths? Or the melancholy in the sweetness? Parallel to Le nozze di Figaro, the Piano Concerto No. 22 is a work that has exactly that character tone and which the Norwegian pianist Christian Ihle Hadland takes on: gripping and dance-like - and not banal for a second. Elena Kats-Chernin's Dance of the Paper Umbrellas opens the program just as light-footed as Mozart. Franz Schubert's 4th Symphony is nicknamed "Tragic", but takes the audience on a dramatic, musically stirring journey. Grażyna Bacewicz's fast-paced overture for orchestra sets the stage. Two of the most romantic artistic souls are on the program when the young Danish pianist Gustav Piekut again visits the Odense Symphony Orchestra. This time we will hear his nimble fingers in Chopin's romantic masterpiece, the endlessly sonorous 2nd Piano Concerto in an evening that also offers Schumann's brave 4th Symphony, which in many ways set new standards for the symphony as an art form, as well as a powerful overture of the unfairly forgotten Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz.

However you hear them, guest conductor Teresa Riveiro Böhm has made them the climax of a concert filled with powerful voices and dark poetry. Future first guest conductor Maxim Emelyanychev leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's last symphony number 41. The addition "Jupiter" was added after the composer's death and is believed to refer to the Roman god of the same name, whose lightning can be heard in the opening chord of the first movement. German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt performs Grażyna Bacewicz's Second Cello Concerto and the program also includes Sergei Prokofiev's imaginative suite The Love for the Three Oranges .

The Tesla Quartet formed at the Julliard School in New York in 2008. From 2009-2012 they were the Graduate Quartet in Residence with the famed Takacs Quartet at the University of Colorado Boulder. They have won top prizes in several competitions, tour widely, and commissioned 12 new works during the Covid pandemic in 2020. They will perform the popular Haydn “Joke” Quartet, Opus 33, No. 2, and the Dvorak String Quartet No. 10, Opus 51, as well as introducing us to String Quartet No. 3 by Polish/Lithuanian composer Grazina Bacewicz (1909-1969).

Our Masterworks series begins with a defiantly optimistic WWII-era overture by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz as she lived through the war in Warsaw. Sibelius’s haunting and exquisite Violin Concerto follows, delivering an achingly beautiful tribute to a dream slipping just out of reach. Last is Dvořák’s sun-soaked Eighth Symphony, a nostalgic reflection of summertime bird calls, windswept trees, and happier times.

Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski is also half Polish, and the Polish connections in this programme are strong: Scottish piano virtuoso Ronald Stevenson’s suite on Paderewski’s sole opera (Jablonski’s recording of selected piano works by Stevenson is released on Ondine on 4 October 2024), a selection of works by Szymanowski, and the intricate Second Sonata (1953) of Grażyna Bacewicz, whose works for piano and piano and orchestra he recently recorded to great critical acclaim.

SPCO Artistic Partner and violist extraordinaire Tabea Zimmermann returns to open the SPCO’s 66th season with the dramatic overture to Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni and Mozart’s beloved Sinfonia Concertante alongside SPCO Concertmaster, Steven Copes. The program also features Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, a celebratory launch to the season, akin to the uncorking of a bottle of champagne.

Jaime Martín conducts dramatic highlights from Prokofiev’s ballet score after charismatic Franco-Serbian soloist Nemanja Radulović sets off fireworks in the ultimate Romantic violin concerto. And, to begin, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales unleashes the strident energies of Grażyna Bacewicz’s thrilling Overture, which quotes the famous ‘V for Victory’ motif from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

For the show My Heart Wants Out, young students have written poetry, and readings are interspersed with classical music. This is a collaboration with Läsfrämjarinstitutet (”The Reading Promotion Institute”) and the community group Livet Bitch! Scenkonst, with whom the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra has previously worked on the production of Romeo and Juliet (2021 and 2022).

My Heart Wants Out

Sweden's Radio Symphony Orchestra meets Ukrainian musician colleagues on Ukraine's Independence Day. We will feel the presence of Ukrainian folk music, including in the newly composed Reflections on a Folk Song by Leonid Desyatnikov, but also experience music that borrows tones from completely different times and places, as in the modern classic Der Bote , where Valentin Silvestrov weaved together music by Mozart with a contemporary tonality. The music knows no borders, but the heart of this concert is in Ukraine.
