The Equilibrium Quartet, four members of the Orchestra who aim to re-balance inequality in music, present a chamber concert with a fascinating difference. They'll perform works from the first lady of Polish music, Grażyna Bacewicz, Panamanian folk, and the beautiful yet largely undiscovered music of Emilie Mayer, before easing gently into the Christmas season with Rebecca Clarke’s Combined Carols.

Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski is also half Polish, and the Polish connections in this programme are strong: Scottish piano virtuoso Ronald Stevenson’s suite on Paderewski’s sole opera (Jablonski’s recording of selected piano works by Stevenson is released on Ondine on 4 October 2024), a selection of works by Szymanowski, and the intricate Second Sonata (1953) of Grażyna Bacewicz, whose works for piano and piano and orchestra he recently recorded to great critical acclaim.

“Music begins where language ends.” Sibelius’s profound words echo deeply through this program steeped in nostalgia and emotional gravitas. Our Masterworks series begins with a defiantly optimistic WWII-era overture by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz as she lived through the war in Warsaw. Sibelius’s haunting and exquisite Violin Concerto follows, delivering an achingly beautiful tribute to a dream slipping just out of reach. Last is Dvořák’s sun-soaked Eighth Symphony, a nostalgic reflection of summertime bird calls, windswept trees, and happier times.

And, to begin, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales unleashes the strident energies of Grażyna Bacewicz’s thrilling Overture, which quotes the famous ‘V for Victory’ motif from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

Sweden's Radio Symphony Orchestra meets Ukrainian musician colleagues on Ukraine's Independence Day. We will feel the presence of Ukrainian folk music, including in the newly composed Reflections on a Folk Song by Leonid Desyatnikov, but also experience music that borrows tones from completely different times and places, as in the modern classic Der Bote , where Valentin Silvestrov weaved together music by Mozart with a contemporary tonality. The music knows no borders, but the heart of this concert is in Ukraine.

Combine these 20th-century works for two, three, and four musicians, and the result is an intriguing concert that expands horizons. Written in 1994, Jean Françaix’s lighthearted Trio for Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano is charming and witty. Folk and classical idioms intertwine in Erwin Schulhoff’s 1925 Duo for Violin and Cello, while Maurice Ravel’s revolutionary encounter with jazz reverberates throughout his electrifying second Sonata for Violin and Piano. The Borromeo String Quartet, heralded for their “edge-of-the-seat performances” (Boston Globe), takes on the intelligent intensity of the String Quartet No. 6 by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz.

Debuting conductor Marta Gardolińska leads the San Francisco Symphony in Felix Mendelssohn's evocative travelogue, inspired by a visit to the ruins of Holyrood Chapel in Edinburgh. Grażyna Bacewic wrote her Overture in 1943, during the German occupation of her native Poland. The premiere was delayed until her homeland was liberated from the Nazis two years later. Written in the aftermath of World War I, Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto is an urgent elegy, a late-life affirmation of Englishness.

Prolific Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, who was also a violinist, pianist, and accomplished author, is represented with her contemplative Partita for Orchestra. Internationally-acclaimed Russian violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky joins TŌN for Hungarian composer Joseph Joachim’s Variations for Violin and Orchestra. Then the orchestra gives the U.S. premiere of a recently discovered concerto by famed Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe. The program concludes with the energetic and passionate Second Symphony of Romanian composer George Enescu, written at a time when he was also one of the most in-demand concert violinists in the world.

Come celebrate Anton Bruckner’s 200th birthday as we perform one of the most important romantic composers of all time. Bruckner’s heroic 4th symphony premiered 150 years ago and has since become his most famous. Geradezu manisch beginnt Witold Lutosławskis klanggewaltiges »Konzert für Orchester« mit den immer gleichen Paukenschlägen über 38 Takte hinweg, und Samuel Barbers Violinkonzert endet in einem rasend schnellen, mechanistischem Perpetuum mobile. Eine atemraubende Tour de Force in Tönen. Gut, dass da die Dirigentin dieses Programms vom Leistungssport kommt – dem hatte sich die Polin Marta Gardolinska jedenfalls gewidmet, bevor die Musik ihre Profession wurde. »Unsere Arbeit ist der von Sportlern sehr ähnlich«, sagt sie. »Sie ist sehr intensiv, und für ein langes Konzert braucht man einfach viel Körperkraft.« Doch bevor sie das hr-Sinfonieorchester durch das kratzbürstige Barber-Finale steuert, wird erst einmal kräftig spätromantisch eingeseift. Als sein »Seifenkonzert« hat Samuel Barber sein Violinkonzert ja selbst bezeichnet, aber nicht wegen des lyrisch-gesanglichen Schäumens der ersten beiden Sätze. Vielmehr weil es finanziert wurde von einem amerikanischen Industriellen, dem Produzenten der Fels-Naptha-Haushaltsseife. Als Solistin kann man hier die junge Geigerin Maria Ioudenitch erleben, die derzeit bei Christian Tetzlaff an der Kronberg Academy studiert.

There’s a special kinship between Scotland and Poland – two nations with stirring histories and dauntless spirits. Grażyna Bacewicz stood her own ground in a time of tyranny, writing music as characterful as it is defiant. Karol Szymanowski imagined new realms of musical sensuality, and the dazzling young South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim is passionate about his silken, shimmering First Violin Concerto. Then, to finish, Witold Lutosławski launches fabulous musical fireworks into the grey skies of communist Poland. Fiery, playful, and utterly original his Concerto for Orchestra is one of post-war music’s true showstoppers, and it’s a special favourite of guest conductor Marta Gardolińska. Beethoven makes an All Hallow’s Eve appearance with the remarkable “Ghost” Trio. Our program closes with an American gem that deserves serious reappraisal. Arthur Foote, born in Salem, a distinguished member of the “Boston Six”, was noted for many fine chamber works. His Piano Quintet, a feast of romantic Americana, rounds out a rich autumn cornucopia.

Accordo is a string ensemble composed of present and former principal string players of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra. The group has been named “Best Chamber Ensemble” by the Minneapolis Star Tribune and “the dream team of chamber music” by Minnesota Monthly. Accordo has been performing since 2008 to consistently well sold and enthusiastic audiences.

Ruth Reinhardt’s Nashville debut features two piano concertos composed centuries apart. At one end of the spectrum is Bach’s 1730s Keyboard Concerto in A Major, at the other is Rounds by Jesse Montgomery. Written in 2022 in close collaboration with Awadagin Pratt, The Boston Globe praised Rounds for its “narrative flair and structural clarity.” Bookending the concert are Bacewicz’s contemplative Partita for Orchestra and one of the most beloved works in the repertoire, Brahms’ First Symphony.

The lively opener, by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, stands in the tradition of rousing concert overtures.

Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro was composed in 1905 to show off the virtuosity of players in the string section of the newly formed London Symphony Orchestra.
20th Century Polish composer and violinist Grażyna Bacewicz showcases each section—violins, violas, cellos and double basses—and makes each the soloist in her Concerto for String Orchestra.
Achingly beautiful, Eclogue for Strings by British composer Gerald Finzi was originally intended to be a grand piano concerto. The one-movement piece that emerged instead—never performed during the composer’s lifetime—is played by San Francisco-born Elizabeth Dorman.
Dvořák’s talent for melody-making is at the fore in Serenade for Strings, a rich and soulful piece than takes listeners on a journey from its mellow opening, through a graceful waltz, to a jubilant finale.

With its fiery passions surging from icy evocations, Sibelius’ sole concerto is one of the most cherished works in the violin repertoire. SCO Conductor Emeritus Joseph Swensen has long been a committed and much-lauded Sibelian: he accompanies young, New Zealand-born Geneva Lewis – until recently a member of the prestigious BBC New Generation Artists project – in this intensely emotional masterpiece.

The Tesla Quartet formed at the Julliard School in New York in 2008. From 2009-2012 they were the Graduate Quartet in Residence with the famed Takacs Quartet at the University of Colorado Boulder. They have won top prizes in several competitions, tour widely, and commissioned 12 new works during the Covid pandemic in 2020. They will perform the popular Haydn “Joke” Quartet, Opus 33, No. 2, and the Dvorak String Quartet No. 10, Opus 51, as well as introducing us to String Quartet No. 3 by Polish/Lithuanian composer Grazina Bacewicz (1909-1969).

Future first guest conductor Maxim Emelyanychev leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's last symphony number 41. The addition "Jupiter" was added after the composer's death and is believed to refer to the Roman god of the same name, whose lightning can be heard in the opening chord of the first movement. German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt performs Grażyna Bacewicz's Second Cello Concerto and the program also includes Sergei Prokofiev's imaginative suite The Love for the Three Oranges .

Celebrated for her “full, luxuriously toned upper range” (The Los Angeles Times), and “astonishing coloratura with radiant top notes” (Calgary Herald) particularly in the music of Bach and Handel, recent seasons have included performances with the New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Bach Collegium Japan, Wiener Akademie (Austria), NDR Hannover Radiophilharmonie (Germany), the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Early Music Festival, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Canada), Minnesota Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Mark Morris Dance Group, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue New York, The Choir and Orchestra of Trinity Wall Street, and Voices of Music. Ms. Panthaki is no stranger to classical and modern concert repertoire; she is in high demand for her interpretations of Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Poulenc, and Orff, as well as numerous new music premieres. Her discography includes the recently released recording of Handel’s Joseph and his Brethren with Nicholas McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque, solo Bach cantatas with the Cantata Collective, and Graupner’s opera Antiochus und Stratonica with the Boston Early Music Festival.

California Symphony’s Young American Composer-in-Residence (2023-26) Saad Haddad presents his second commission for the orchestra. 
Grażyna Bacewicz incorporates Polish folk themes in a piece that features intense moments of drama and a demanding and virtuosic lead role for piano, played here by internationally acclaimed pianist David Fung.
Tchaikovsky’s sixth and final symphony is also known as the Pathétique, but the composer originally called it the Passionate. Grand, sweeping, and with themes you’ll recognize from movies and pop culture, it’s one of the Russian melody master’s most popular and frequently performed works.

Sergei Rachmaninov was born in imperial Russia, but he died in Beverly Hills, and his Symphonic Dances fuse the melancholy of exile with the rhythm, the glamour and the sheer verve of the jazz-age USA. Dream ballet? Showpiece for orchestra? Or simply the most personal symphony Rachmaninov never wrote? However you hear them, guest conductor Teresa Riveiro Böhm has made them the climax of a concert filled with powerful voices and dark poetry. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture gets things off to an electrifying start. Then BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Johanna Wallroth turns the leaves of the Richard Strauss songbook: miniature worlds of tenderness, melody and romance, perfectly suited to what one critic called the “pure magic” of her voice.

Afternoon Performance: Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances

Two of the most romantic artistic souls are on the program when the young Danish pianist Gustav Piekut again visits the Odense Symphony Orchestra. This time we will hear his nimble fingers in Chopin's romantic masterpiece, the endlessly sonorous 2nd Piano Concerto in an evening that also offers Schumann's brave 4th Symphony, which in many ways set new standards for the symphony as an art form, as well as a powerful overture of the unfairly forgotten Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz.

There is a bittersweet note in the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that people have been struggling to describe for centuries. Is it the happiness in the depths? Or the melancholy in the sweetness? Parallel to Le nozze di Figaro, the Piano Concerto No. 22 is a work that has exactly that character tone and which the Norwegian pianist Christian Ihle Hadland takes on: gripping and dance-like - and not banal for a second. Elena Kats-Chernin's Dance of the Paper Umbrellas opens the program just as light-footed as Mozart. Franz Schubert's 4th Symphony is nicknamed "Tragic", but takes the audience on a dramatic, musically stirring journey. Grażyna Bacewicz's fast-paced overture for orchestra sets the stage. A rollercoaster of (spring) emotions!
