Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski is also half Polish, and the Polish connections in this programme are strong: Scottish piano virtuoso Ronald Stevenson’s suite on Paderewski’s sole opera (Jablonski’s recording of selected piano works by Stevenson is released on Ondine on 4 October 2024), a selection of works by Szymanowski, and the intricate Second Sonata (1953) of Grażyna Bacewicz, whose works for piano and piano and orchestra he recently recorded to great critical acclaim.

Our Masterworks series begins with a defiantly optimistic WWII-era overture by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz as she lived through the war in Warsaw. Sibelius’s haunting and exquisite Violin Concerto follows, delivering an achingly beautiful tribute to a dream slipping just out of reach. Sweden's Radio Symphony Orchestra meets Ukrainian musician colleagues on Ukraine's Independence Day. We will feel the presence of Ukrainian folk music, including in the newly composed Reflections on a Folk Song by Leonid Desyatnikov, but also experience music that borrows tones from completely different times and places, as in the modern classic Der Bote , where Valentin Silvestrov weaved together music by Mozart with a contemporary tonality. The music knows no borders, but the heart of this concert is in Ukraine.

Debuting conductor Marta Gardolińska leads the San Francisco Symphony in Felix Mendelssohn's evocative travelogue, inspired by a visit to the ruins of Holyrood Chapel in Edinburgh. Grażyna Bacewic wrote her Overture in 1943, during the German occupation of her native Poland. The premiere was delayed until her homeland was liberated from the Nazis two years later. Written in the aftermath of World War I, Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto is an urgent elegy, a late-life affirmation of Englishness.

Prolific Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, who was also a violinist, pianist, and accomplished author, is represented with her contemplative Partita for Orchestra. Internationally-acclaimed Russian violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky joins TŌN for Hungarian composer Joseph Joachim’s Variations for Violin and Orchestra. Then the orchestra gives the U.S. premiere of a recently discovered concerto by famed Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe. The program concludes with the energetic and passionate Second Symphony of Romanian composer George Enescu, written at a time when he was also one of the most in-demand concert violinists in the world.

Then, to finish, Witold Lutosławski launches fabulous musical fireworks into the grey skies of communist Poland. Ruth Reinhardt’s Nashville debut features two piano concertos composed centuries apart. At one end of the spectrum is Bach’s 1730s Keyboard Concerto in A Major, at the other is Rounds by Jesse Montgomery. Written in 2022 in close collaboration with Awadagin Pratt, The Boston Globe praised Rounds for its “narrative flair and structural clarity.” Bookending the concert are Bacewicz’s contemplative Partita for Orchestra and one of the most beloved works in the repertoire, Brahms’ First Symphony.

20th Century Polish composer and violinist Grażyna Bacewicz showcases each section—violins, violas, cellos and double basses—and makes each the soloist in her Concerto for String Orchestra.
Achingly beautiful, Eclogue for Strings by British composer Gerald Finzi was originally intended to be a grand piano concerto. The one-movement piece that emerged instead—never performed during the composer’s lifetime—is played by San Francisco-born Elizabeth Dorman.
Dvořák’s talent for melody-making is at the fore in Serenade for Strings, a rich and soulful piece than takes listeners on a journey from its mellow opening, through a graceful waltz, to a jubilant finale.

The Tesla Quartet formed at the Julliard School in New York in 2008. From 2009-2012 they were the Graduate Quartet in Residence with the famed Takacs Quartet at the University of Colorado Boulder. They have won top prizes in several competitions, tour widely, and commissioned 12 new works during the Covid pandemic in 2020. They will perform the popular Haydn “Joke” Quartet, Opus 33, No. 2, and the Dvorak String Quartet No. 10, Opus 51, as well as introducing us to String Quartet No. 3 by Polish/Lithuanian composer Grazina Bacewicz (1909-1969).

Future first guest conductor Maxim Emelyanychev leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's last symphony number 41. The addition "Jupiter" was added after the composer's death and is believed to refer to the Roman god of the same name, whose lightning can be heard in the opening chord of the first movement. German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt performs Grażyna Bacewicz's Second Cello Concerto and the program also includes Sergei Prokofiev's imaginative suite The Love for the Three Oranges .

Soprano Sherezade Panthaki enjoys ongoing international collaborations with many of the world’s leading conductors including Nicholas McGegan, Masaaki Suzuki, Martin Haselböck, Mark Morris, Nicholas Kraemer, Matthew Halls, Stephen Stubbs, and Gary Wedow. Celebrated for her “full, luxuriously toned upper range” (The Los Angeles Times), and “astonishing coloratura with radiant top notes” (Calgary Herald) particularly in the music of Bach and Handel, recent seasons have included performances with the New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Bach Collegium Japan, Wiener Akademie (Austria), NDR Hannover Radiophilharmonie (Germany), the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Early Music Festival, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Canada), Minnesota Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Mark Morris Dance Group, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue New York, The Choir and Orchestra of Trinity Wall Street, and Voices of Music. Ms. Panthaki is no stranger to classical and modern concert repertoire; she is in high demand for her interpretations of Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Poulenc, and Orff, as well as numerous new music premieres. California Symphony’s Young American Composer-in-Residence (2023-26) Saad Haddad presents his second commission for the orchestra. 
Grażyna Bacewicz incorporates Polish folk themes in a piece that features intense moments of drama and a demanding and virtuosic lead role for piano, played here by internationally acclaimed pianist David Fung.
Tchaikovsky’s sixth and final symphony is also known as the Pathétique, but the composer originally called it the Passionate. Grand, sweeping, and with themes you’ll recognize from movies and pop culture, it’s one of the Russian melody master’s most popular and frequently performed works. 

Sergei Rachmaninov was born in imperial Russia, but he died in Beverly Hills, and his Symphonic Dances fuse the melancholy of exile with the rhythm, the glamour and the sheer verve of the jazz-age USA. Dream ballet? Showpiece for orchestra? Or simply the most personal symphony Rachmaninov never wrote? However you hear them, guest conductor Teresa Riveiro Böhm has made them the climax of a concert filled with powerful voices and dark poetry. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture gets things off to an electrifying start. Then BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Johanna Wallroth turns the leaves of the Richard Strauss songbook: miniature worlds of tenderness, melody and romance, perfectly suited to what one critic called the “pure magic” of her voice.

Afternoon Performance: Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances

Two of the most romantic artistic souls are on the program when the young Danish pianist Gustav Piekut again visits the Odense Symphony Orchestra. This time we will hear his nimble fingers in Chopin's romantic masterpiece, the endlessly sonorous 2nd Piano Concerto in an evening that also offers Schumann's brave 4th Symphony, which in many ways set new standards for the symphony as an art form, as well as a powerful overture of the unfairly forgotten Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz.

Emerging conductor Ruth Reinhardt makes her SLSO debut in a program that burns with radiance. Warmth emanates from Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler Symphony, a statement of defiance in troubled times. Longing sings through the unforgettable melodies of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, performed by rising star Andrei Ioniță. Soulful darkness touches the SLSO’s strings in Bacewicz’s long-forgotten Concerto for Strings.

The violist Lawrence Power is visiting OS again, and he is the soloist in Grazyna Bacewicz's Viola Concerto. Bacewicz was one of the most significant Polish composers of the 20th century, and although she is not heard that often in Denmark, she was one of the main names at the Musikhøst festival here in Odense in the mid-1990s. The concerto is divided into three movements – two lively ones and a beautiful, dark middle movement. Here, the contrast to the joie de vivre comes in the slow tempo, which carries more obscure feelings with it.

Beethoven's 6th Symphony

Featuring the esteemed pianist Daniela Mineva, we will perform Grażyna Bacewicz’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, a late-Romantic style work inspired by Polish folk songs. Professor of Music at Cal Poly Humboldt, Dr. Mineva has been hailed as a “vibrant and expressive performer” (New York Times). The season concludes with one of the monuments of classical music: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major. Beethoven himself fondly considered this symphony among his best works. The exquisite second movement was so popular that the audience demanded an encore at the premiere.

A Grand Finale

Principal Conductor Dinis Sousa brings the season to a close, alongside pianist Benjamin Grosvenor and our very own Royal Northern Sinfonia.
