Come celebrate Anton Bruckner’s 200th birthday as we perform one of the most important romantic composers of all time. Bruckner’s heroic 4th symphony premiered 150 years ago and has since become his most famous. Also joining us is the 2024 Gilmore Young Artist winner, Kasey Shao, presented in collaboration with the Gilmore Piano Festival, to perform Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto. The program will open with an overture by composer Grażyna Bacewicz.

Prolific Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, who was also a violinist, pianist, and accomplished author, is represented with her contemplative Partita for Orchestra. Internationally-acclaimed Russian violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky joins TŌN for Hungarian composer Joseph Joachim’s Variations for Violin and Orchestra. Then the orchestra gives the U.S. premiere of a recently discovered concerto by famed Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe. The program concludes with the energetic and passionate Second Symphony of Romanian composer George Enescu, written at a time when he was also one of the most in-demand concert violinists in the world.

Debuting conductor Marta Gardolińska leads the San Francisco Symphony in Felix Mendelssohn's evocative travelogue, inspired by a visit to the ruins of Holyrood Chapel in Edinburgh. Grażyna Bacewic wrote her Overture in 1943, during the German occupation of her native Poland. The premiere was delayed until her homeland was liberated from the Nazis two years later. Written in the aftermath of World War I, Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto is an urgent elegy, a late-life affirmation of Englishness.

Renowned pianist Benjamin Hochman returns to the stage to play and conduct the orchestra.  This program will show a technical use of the piano and musical excellence that is sure to blow you away. Hear Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 as the harpsichord, violin, and flute take the spotlight.

Drawing inspiration from Dvořák’s late 19th-century journey to the United States, his “New World Symphony” embodies the spirit of exploration and adventure. Its dynamic themes and rhythms brilliantly portray the diverse cultural tapestry and expansive terrains of the Americas. And, in a delightful program highlight, Principal Clarinet Eric Abramovitz performs an audience favourite, Mozart’s enchanting Clarinet Concerto.

Soprano Sherezade Panthaki enjoys ongoing international collaborations with many of the world’s leading conductors including Nicholas McGegan, Masaaki Suzuki, Martin Haselböck, Mark Morris, Nicholas Kraemer, Matthew Halls, Stephen Stubbs, and Gary Wedow. Celebrated for her “full, luxuriously toned upper range” (The Los Angeles Times), and “astonishing coloratura with radiant top notes” (Calgary Herald) particularly in the music of Bach and Handel, recent seasons have included performances with the New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Bach Collegium Japan, Wiener Akademie (Austria), NDR Hannover Radiophilharmonie (Germany), the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Early Music Festival, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Canada), Minnesota Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Mark Morris Dance Group, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue New York, The Choir and Orchestra of Trinity Wall Street, and Voices of Music. Ms. Panthaki is no stranger to classical and modern concert repertoire; she is in high demand for her interpretations of Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Poulenc, and Orff, as well as numerous new music premieres. Her discography includes the recently released recording of Handel’s Joseph and his Brethren with Nicholas McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque, solo Bach cantatas with the Cantata Collective, and Graupner’s opera Antiochus und Stratonica with the Boston Early Music Festival.
