Welcome to Fleet Street, where the razors are sharp, and the pies are… questionable. Sweeney Todd slices through the competition as an 8-time Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon. With Stephen Sondheim’s deliciously devious score and Hugh Wheeler’s wicked wit, this gothic tale has thrilled audiences (and made them a bit nervous about barbers) since its Broadway debut. Sweeney Todd, the brooding barber with a bone to pick, returns to grimy 19th-century London in search of justice. But justice, it seems, is best served with a crust. Enter Mrs. Lovett, the entrepreneurial pie-maker whose business is going nowhere fast—until Todd’s special brand of “close shaves” gives her menu a sinister upgrade.

Birmingham Repertory Theatre

Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a new genre of theatrical performance emerged in the United States: the musical . Its birth dates back to September 12, 1866, when The Black Crook premiered at Niblo's Garden Theatre in New York . It was the result of a collaboration between two companies that had previously been unable to perform: the first, a singing and dancing company from Europe, unable to find a suitable venue, and the second, a drama company, due to excessive production costs. Derived from European operetta and adapted to American tastes, this show consists of a comedy, generally brilliant, set in America, whose onstage action is enhanced by acting, singing, dancing, and music—elements that are not fused but rather integrated and harmonized with one another. The musical is the protagonist of this concert in which we will be able to listen to some hits starting from All That Jazz , the opening song of Chicago (1975) by John Kander , which became so famous that it gave its title to the 1979 film All That Jazz. Equally famous is the song Being Alive , sung at the end of the second act by Robert, a thirty-five year old bachelor, the protagonist of the musical Company (1970) by Stephen Joshua Sondheim . Sung by the character Albin Mougeotte at the end of the first act of the musical Cage aux folles (1983) by Jerry Herman , is I am what I am, whose lyrics, which exalt diversity, have become a sort of anthem for the LGBT community, while, inspired by the famous novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera (1986) was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber , in collaboration with Charles Hart, author of the songs' lyrics, and Richard Stilgoe, who wrote the libretto and additional lyrics. On this occasion, a medley of the musical's main songs will be performed. The musical Guys and Dolls , set in the picturesque and sinful New York of the 1940s, dates back to 1950, and was composed by Frank Henry Loesser , who also wrote the lyrics . It is simply the namesake of the great composer and founder of the Second Viennese School, Claude-Michel Schönberg.

The hit Broadway musical about a Victorian-era barber who swears revenge on the corrupt judge who ruined his life. As London burns under the relentless bombardment of the Blitz, terrified citizens descend into the underground — huddled together in tight, airless tunnels where safety feels as fragile as the walls around them. Hope flickers like failing torchlight, and fear thrives in the shadows. In such a world, trust is scarce… and danger is always closer than you think.

Out of this darkness emerges Sweeney Todd, a wronged man returned from exile, seeking retribution against those who tore his life apart. His razors are sharp. His heart is harder. And every cut brings him closer to justice as he sees it.

Partnering with the resourceful — and dangerously inventive — Mrs. Lovett, Todd carves a path through a city already trembling with dread. Air raid sirens wail overhead. Secrets are whispered behind blackout curtains. And the ovens are about to get… busy.

Stephen Sondheim’s iconic musical thriller is reimagined against the backdrop of wartime Britain — where survival means doing the unthinkable, and vengeance is served piping hot.

Benjamin Barker returns to London after years of exile – with a new name and sinister intentions. As Sweeney Todd, he opens a barbershop above Mrs. Lovett's bakery on Fleet Street. He wants revenge on Judge Turpin, who once unjustly deported him to Australia in order to steal his wife and daughter. Todd's razor is meant to send Turpin to his doom. The macabre business model he devises with Mrs. Lovett suits him perfectly: a fresh shave is half the battle. The customers who take a seat in Todd's barber's chair end up one floor below – in Mrs. Lovett's meat pies, which soon become incredibly popular. While beggars wander the streets outside and sailors sing of love, madness takes hold of the barber – and sweeps everything away with it.

Their rivalry leads to an all-out street fight over territory.
