Benjamin Barker returns to London after years of exile – with a new name and sinister intentions. As Sweeney Todd, he opens a barbershop above Mrs. Lovett's bakery on Fleet Street. He wants revenge on Judge Turpin, who once unjustly deported him to Australia in order to steal his wife and daughter. Todd's razor is meant to send Turpin to his doom. The macabre business model he devises with Mrs. Lovett suits him perfectly: a fresh shave is half the battle. The customers who take a seat in Todd's barber's chair end up one floor below – in Mrs. Lovett's meat pies, which soon become incredibly popular. While beggars wander the streets outside and sailors sing of love, madness takes hold of the barber – and sweeps everything away with it.

Into the Woods is a magical and thought-provoking musical that intertwines several well-known fairy tales with an original story about a childless Baker and his Wife. When the Witch next door reveals that she placed a curse on their family, the couple must venture into the woods to collect four items — “the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold” — in order to break the spell. Along the way, they encounter Cinderella on her way to the ball, Jack climbing the beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood heading to Grandma’s house, and Rapunzel locked away in her tower.

Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns home after fifteen years. He seeks vengeance against a lecherous judge and the spineless beadle who framed him. Helped in his escape from exile by a virtuous but naive sailor, Anthony Hope, Sweeney plans to reunite with his wife Lucy and daughter Johanna. He soon reunites with Mrs. Lovett, whose failing pie shop is in the building where his barbershop used to be. Sweeney’s road to revenge leads him to re-open his barbershop where he attempts to kill the judge, now Johanna’s guardian. His attack fails and he goes mad, vowing revenge on not only the judge but all mankind. His revenge comes to fruition when he and Mrs. Lovett decide to add a special but gruesome ingredient to her pies. Sweeney’s thirst for blood and Mrs. Lovett’s inability to keep up with the demand lead to heartbreak, blackmail, and destruction beyond their comprehension.

First, be swept away by gossamer wings. Transporting you to a world of Chinese legends, Butterfly Lover’s Concerto tells the tale of two young, ill-fated lovers who are reincarnated as butterflies. Following is a suite of Asian-themed works which will wrap you in their musical embrace. The soundscape then turns to Shakespeare, by way of Russia and America, with Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture Romeo and Juliet and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story upping the emotional quotient from passion and conflict to memorable and energetic dance themes.

Spanning 40 years, Addison and Wilson Mizner are constantly looking for the next way to strike it rich. This quest turns into a test of morality and judgment for the two brothers that will change their lives in unexpected ways.

In a run-down theatre scheduled for demolition, former chorus girls reunite to honour their performances there during the interwar years. The theatre is ramshackle and the harshness of age has tarnished the rosy tint of their nostalgia. Sparkling ghosts of their youth perform old numbers, and the women’s unfinished business soon becomes clear.

He is an authority on film music and has reconstructed and arranged many classic soundtracks for concert settings. Since 1994, Wilson leads his own hand-picked orchestra, specializing in film and musicals, and performs annually at The Proms summer festival.

When Samurai Kayama and America-loving fisherman Manjiro are tasked with meeting the American gunboat docked on the coast of Kanagawa, little could they know that they would irreversibly change the “Floating Kingdom.” 

East West Players previously produced Pacific Overtures in 1979 with EWP founding Artistic Director Mako reprising his Tony-nominated performance as The Reciter. The musical was again produced by EWP in 1998 as the David Henry Hwang Theater’s inaugural performance. Supported in part by the David Lee Foundation.
