With their incestuous, adulterous love, they violate the guest and marriage laws that Wotan's wife Fricka watches over. Siegmund is therefore supposed to die in a duel with Hunding, but Wotan's daughter Brünnhilde, a Valkyrie, defies her father's will and fights for Siegmund. Wotan is forced to kill Siegmund himself. Brünnhilde is punished by her father: he surrounds her with a wall of fire and sinks her into a deep sleep.

He asks the marshal for a suitable candidate to deliver a silver rose to his very young bride Sophie - daughter of the newly ennobled, rich Lord of Faninal. The Marschallin suggests Octavian. She reflects melancholically on the transience of life. With a »light heart and light hands«, she wants to let Octavian go one day..

One day, when Senta's father returns home from a long voyage with a mysterious man, Senta is the only one who recognizes the Flying Dutchman in the sinister foreign captain. At the cost of self-destruction, she decides to redeem him.

Robert Jindra, principal guest conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, will present Béla Bartók's one-act opera Bluebeard's Castle from 1911. German bass Günther Groissböck will play the role of Bluebeard, while Judith will be performed by Hungarian mezzo-soprano Szilvia Vörös.

The final day of The Ring is staged with The Twilight of the Gods . This completes Sir David McVicar's directorial vision, which returns the Ring to its mythical foundations and narrative linearity, rightfully placing it among the benchmarks of the Western canon. Ancient tragedy, Baroque theater, and Elizabethan drama converge in a reading that identifies two episodes of comedy— Rheingold and Siegfried —and two episodes of tragedy, Die Walküre and, above all, Götterdämmerung , which marks the final arrival at catastrophe.

When Strauss and Hofmannsthal wrote «Der Rosenkavalier» – setting it in an imaginary Rococo Vienna and yet closely linked to the decadent fin de siècle – they created a profound social comedy. It is not without melancholy that the Marschallin lets her young lover Octavian go when he falls head over heels with Sophie, who hails from Faninal’s bourgeois household. As voluptuous as Strauss' score is, it contains tender moments of dream and melancholy. Director Lydia Steier stages Strauss’ opera according to an aesthetic concept by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. Diana Damrau sings the Marschallin.

Meet one of opera’s most unforgettable characters, Katerina Ismailova, in the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s (BSO) concert performance of Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. The BSO’s remarkable history with Shostakovich’s music dates back to the composer’s lifetime, and in recent years has included multiple Grammy Award–winning recordings and season highlights at Carnegie Hall. Of his “intimate relationship with [Shostakovich’s] music,” Music Director and Conductor Andris Nelsons says, “I feel like I know him, in a mystical way.” There’s no better way to hear this music than with the BSO at Carnegie Hall.

After meeting for the first time, the two are in love. Surprisingly, the Spanish King Philip II announces that he wants to marry Elisabeth himself. Elisabeth complies for reasons of state. The liberal Marquis Posa advises his desperate friend Don Carlo to become politically active for a better future for Flanders. However, this puts Don Carlo and Posa in dangerous opposition to the overpowering Grand Inquisitor.

Recital Günther Groissböck

Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the helm of Strauss’s most beloved score, following his acclaimed Met performances of the composer’s Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Salome. After her “resplendent” (Observer) 2025 portrayal of Strauss’s Arabella, soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen stars as the elegant Marschallin, alongside brilliant mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo as her impetuous younger lover, Octavian. Soprano Ying Fang is the lovely heiress who steals his heart, and bass Günther Groissböck reprises his uproarious portrayal of the bumptious Baron Ochs in Robert Carsen’s turn-of-the-century setting.
