In 1896, on the 50th anniversary of his concerto debut, Camille Saint-Saëns wrote a final piano concerto for himself as a soloist. It is considered his "Egyptian" concerto because he supposedly composed it in Luxor on the Nile. Indeed, the second movement in particular draws inspiration from Egypt (a Nubian love song and the sounds of crickets and frogs on the Nile), but also influences from Spain and East Asia. The energetic third movement is also inspired by Saint-Saëns's frequent travels, namely by the sound of ships' steam engines. Yet the composer knows how to dress it all in melodic elegance.

A grand program, weighty and deeply immersed in Romanticism: ultimate masterpieces by Brahms and Bruckner, interpreted by artists who have engaged with these works more intensely than almost anyone else. Bruckner dedicated his last symphony "to the dear Lord"—it doesn't get any lesser than that. The Austrian Manfred Honeck is among the most important Bruckner conductors of our time. He received three Grammy nominations in 2020 for his recording of Bruckner's Ninth with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; he simply finds the perfectly balanced approach to the grand symphonic architecture of this music. Leonidas Kavakos' recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto was no less celebrated, and here, too, balance is central: his interpretation is "the best to appear on CD in years," wrote the music magazine The Guardian. The Brahms concerto, the violinist himself says, is not comparable to other violin concertos—the violin here doesn't merely have to sing melodically. "Here we have this truly incredible connection with the orchestra. It has to sound as homogeneous as possible."

Before becoming Head of Music at Westminster Cathedral in London in 2021, Simon Johnson was organist at St. Paul's Cathedral, where he performed at a variety of royal events, including the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and the celebrations for her 90th birthday. The Eule organ in the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle, with its four manuals and 72 stops, is also very British and majestic. Its four manuals and 72 stops are modeled on the late-Romantic English town hall organs—in the first Toccata of the season, the Duisburg Philharmonic Choir will provide powerful support. Choir director Marcus Strümpe has included Anton Bruckner, among others, on the program, as the late-Romantic composer, as a virtuoso organist and composer of sacred music, was well versed in the combination of choir and organ. In Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's "Hear My Prayer," a soprano joins the organ and choir: the frequent alternations between solo voice and choir are reminiscent of the "anthem" tradition of the Anglican liturgy. William Harris and Herbert Howells, two prominent representatives of Anglican church music, are also on the program, while Louis Vierne, long-time chief organist at Notre-Dame de Paris, represents the rich organ scene in France. An exuberant romantic richness of sound characterizes his organ symphonies, a genre he himself invented.

The Viennese have the waltz * On the Beautiful Blue Danube* , the Praguers have the tone poem *The Moldau* , and the New Yorkers have the musical *West Side Story* . But we Nurembergers have Richard Wagner's opera * The Mastersingers of Nuremberg * as the "music of our city" – the greatest tribute to the Franconian metropolis ever composed. The prelude to Act 1, relatively short in duration but monumental in its impact, is a veritable symphonic poem that encompasses all of the opera's central plot motifs. Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 3, dedicated to Wagner in its original version, is monumental in every respect. Between these two monuments of late Romanticism is a famous masterpiece of early Classical music: Haydn's virtuoso C major concerto featuring the young Japanese rising star of the cello world, Michiaki Ueno. Benjamin Reiners, GMD in Chemnitz and conductor of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic, will be conducting. He has been a guest with us several times since 2012.

Two deeply religious composers open up the concert season of the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg in the Meistersingerhalle. Lil Lacy's flute concerto, written for the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra's long-time flautist, Thomas Jensen, is a work that celebrates life experience and the eternal change we as humans go through.


For Lil Lacy, this work has been a human and artistic journey. “I feel enormous gratitude,” she says. “Firstly, for having been given the opportunity to write a flute concerto, but also for the curiosity and openness with which Thomas has met me. The ongoing dialogue and exchange we have had around the work has been deeply inspiring and has opened up unique layers of sensuality, details and nuances in the music.” Lil Lacy and Thomas Jensen have had a collaboration based on mutual inspiration. From their very first conversations, it was clear that the work should bear the hallmark of a life story – a musical interpretation of the many phases a person goes through from before birth, to childhood, adolescence, adulthood and to a reflection on life. “I didn’t know from the beginning that it would be about life experience. However, this theme arose quite naturally in our conversations, as Thomas has such a rich career and is so curious about so many different musical genres and expressions. Being able to lean into a great life experience, both humanly and artistically, is something that creates perspective and possibilities. For me as a newer composer, it is a great gift to work with such a generous and trusting musician – and human being,” says Lil Lacy. For Thomas Jensen, the work has a deep personal meaning. With a long career behind him, where he has worked with Lil Lacy’s parents, jazz pianist Butch Lacy and singer Birgitte Frieboe, among other things, the collaboration feels almost destined.

At first, Pascal Dusapin considered writing a musical theater work based on Virginia Woolf's novel The Waves . It ultimately evolved into a kind of organ concerto, a "duo for organ and orchestra." Dusapin explains: "Very abstract questions occupied me while working on Waves , questions of tectonics—how different surfaces shift against and into each other." The forces of these tectonic plates, turned into music, initially unfold through the interaction and interaction of "normal" trumpets and signal trumpets. The signal trumpets are positioned to the left and right of the organ. They sound "as if from the organ," in the same boat. The organ itself also begins with these notes, with a characteristic rhythm; everything blends together, magnificently orchestrated.

A contemporary tribute opens tonight’s Prom: Ryan Wigglesworth’s for Laura, after Bach, dedicated to the memory of former BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Leader Laura Samuel and inspired by her recording of a Bach Partita, played at her funeral. Mozart’s stormy Piano Concerto No. 20 completes the programme, with Georgian pianist and former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Mariam Batsashvili as the soloist.

Singing has always been a priority in the Baltic states, but no other country in Europe has such a rich and diverse choral landscape as Latvia. The State Choir of Latvija, Latvia's largest professional ensemble of its kind, also comes from this environment. With unearthly sound power - from radiant soprano heights to unfathomable bass depths - this impressive ensemble not only causes a sensation in its homeland, but also regularly delights audiences in the world's major music metropolises. The Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra considers itself lucky to be able to welcome the approximately 70 singers from Riga again this season after their visit in the 2023/2024 season. Before its performance in Arnold Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder on July 9 and 10, 2025, the State Choir of Latvija will make an a cappella stopover in the Salvatorkirche. Under the direction of Māris Sirmais, an atmospheric program will be performed, which, starting with the romantic sounds of Anton Bruckner or Edward Elgar, touches on classical modernism and, above all, presents music by contemporary Baltic composers.

Two "young" works by Pierre Boulez meet Anton Bruckner's great last symphony. It remained unfinished, but opens the door wide to modernity. Pierre Boulez greatly appreciated Bruckner, often conducted him and played a key role in making Bruckner one of the recognized great symphonists today. In addition, "Figures - Doubles - Prismes" by Boulez can be heard. The title of the work says it all: figures are varied, doubled. In the final section, "Prismes", the previous work appears in a new light, a kind of retrospective on the early work in 1957, re-examined in 1968. Then a vocal work by Pierre Boulez: The poems of EE Cummings inspired him to an experiment. Cummings used language beyond its meaning as material for new, complex and ambiguous language compositions. Boulez has transferred the form and structure of these poems into music with his own sovereign mastery, combining text and music into an exciting and poetic whole.

A concert with the Staatskapelle Dresden under the baton of Tugan Sokhiev and with Sol Gabetta as a soloist: this is the stuff musical dreams are made of. Especially since Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 and Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 are outstanding works of their respective composers, which means the audience is in for an extra-special treat. »Since Beethoven, nothing even similar has been written…!«, the conductor Arthur Nikisch uttered when he gave the first performance of Bruckner’s Seventh in 1884.

When Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his first cello concerto in 1959, it was created in collaboration with his close friend Mstislav Rostropovich. The legendary cellist learned the concerto by heart in just three days and then made several suggestions for improvements. "If I do that, you'll be the only one who can play it. But I'm writing for everyone," the composer explained his decision not to accommodate the requests. Tugan Sokhiev, a conductor more than just a Shostakovich specialist, combines the work with Bruckner's Seventh in the concert – the symphony that, after its premiere under Arthur Nikisch, finally brought the composer his long-awaited breakthrough.

South Korean composer Unsuk Chin has spent most of her working life in Germany where, as a young artist in Berlin, she absorbed many of the acoustic enthusiasms of European modernists in the late 20th century while swiftly building a distinctive language of her own. Her cello concerto, widely described as a triumph at its first appearance many years ago, has been taken up by many cellists and most recently by our own Alisa Weilerstein. Weilerstein’s mastery of drama and plangent lyricism is the perfect match for Unsuk Chin’s defiant and expressive music.
