He takes us from outer space to the very deepest place in the heart of the ball when he builds his enormous musical sequences, which switch surprisingly effortlessly from great drama to subtle intimacy. Organ virtuoso that he was, he uses the orchestra as a gigantic luxury organ, which in a split second can switch from the finest little Austrian folk melody to terrifying cascades of sound - produced with an orchestra that is not much larger than in Beethoven's time, but which uses the entire register in new and surprising ways.

Dutch conductor Jaap van Zweden and American pianist Emanuel Ax return to the San Francisco Symphony for a stellar program featuring two Austrian giants. The passionate, far-reaching C-major Piano Concerto, K.503 is now recognized as one of Mozart’s finest—and most difficult—works in the genre. Olivier Messiaen called the brief third theme of the third movement the most beautiful sequence of bars that Mozart ever wrote. It wasn’t until his Seventh Symphony that Bruckner, age 60, enjoyed any popular success as a composer. The Seventh Symphony features a contrabass tuba and, for the first time outside The Ring cycle, four Wagner tubas. It’s a fitting tribute to Wagner, whom Bruckner memorialized in the symphony’s elegiac coda—calling it “funeral music for the Master.”

Through night to light – per aspera ad astra – numerous works and symphonies since Beethoven's Fifth Symphony have led. Would Franz Schubert have followed a similar path if he had completed the Symphony Fragment in B minor, as the "Unfinished" should correctly be called? After the abysmal, gloomy beginning of the work, the second movement already embarks on the path to light and contains passages of otherworldly beauty that have cast off all earthly weight. Bruckner's Seventh Symphony takes the key of this movement, the radiant E major, as its home key, so that the symphony, metaphorically speaking, already begins in the light. Conversely, as in Schubert's case, the second movement then marks the zone of gloom and despair. In the end, however, this Seventh Symphony closes in dazzling brightness.

Although Bruckner placed his symphonic work in the tradition of Beethoven, he could not equal the great Ludwig: his Ninth Symphony remained unfinished, with several incomplete versions of the finale. Aware of his imminent end, he left a majestic score that the extraordinary Marko Letonja, a regular guest of the OPRL, will magnify: a devastating scherzo framed by slow movements that resonate like a final farewell to life. Bruckner's sonic testament... At the end of his life, Richard Strauss composed a final bouquet of vocal pieces, the Four Last Songs, peaceful swan songs tinged with melancholy.

Let us venture to claim that we could all use a little more romanticism. In this regard, Bruckner’s deeply romantic Fourth Symphony fits the bill. Emerging from the delicate string tremolos in the opening measures, the horn evokes the sounds of nature and a palpable sense of longing for a more ideal world – savoured with a continuous stream of bright colours. Prior to that, there is an opportunity to solve a mystery surrounding the “Prague” Symphony: to this day, it remains unclear why Mozart did not write a minuet for his Symphony No. 38, leaving it with only three movements. Mozart’s biographer Alfred Einstein simply remarked that the symphony said everything it had to say in three movements. The impressive trajectory leading from gloomy realms to sparkling joie de vivre in the “Figaroesque” key of D major confirms his judgment.

When Herbert Blomstedt ascends the conductor’s rostrum, music truly becomes a way of life. The 98-year-old Conductor Laureate of the Staatskapelle embodies a humility and clarity that are deeply rooted in his art. His performances of Bruckner have long been regarded as benchmark interpretations. They are free of pathos and imbued with intellectual rigour, tonal transparency and inner calm. Bruckner’s exploration of musical form culminated in the Fifth Symphony, which premiered in 1876. The composer himself described it as his »most contrapuntally daring symphony«. Placing the highest demands on musicians and listeners alike, the work has an understated grandeur. The finale brings a brilliant fugato, truly an aural apotheosis that abjures vanity.

Among the most famous movements of any of Bruckner’s symphonies, the Adagio from Symphony No. 7 is melodically rich and expansive in scope, resolving into serene acceptance. Miguel Harth-Bedoya considers the music from Cinderella to be some of Prokofiev’s most beautiful and dynamic; he has selected movements from the original ballet score to recreate the beloved fairy tale.

In 1896, on the 50th anniversary of his concerto debut, Camille Saint-Saëns wrote a final piano concerto for himself as a soloist. It is considered his "Egyptian" concerto because he supposedly composed it in Luxor on the Nile. Indeed, the second movement in particular draws inspiration from Egypt (a Nubian love song and the sounds of crickets and frogs on the Nile), but also influences from Spain and East Asia. The energetic third movement is also inspired by Saint-Saëns's frequent travels, namely by the sound of ships' steam engines. Yet the composer knows how to dress it all in melodic elegance.

Bruckner was himself a church musician and plays the orchestra's instruments like the stops of an organ. Thus, the combination with works for the "Queen of Instruments" is a natural fit. A grand program, weighty and deeply immersed in Romanticism: ultimate masterpieces by Brahms and Bruckner, interpreted by artists who have engaged with these works more intensely than almost anyone else. Bruckner dedicated his last symphony "to the dear Lord"—it doesn't get any lesser than that. The Austrian Manfred Honeck is among the most important Bruckner conductors of our time. He received three Grammy nominations in 2020 for his recording of Bruckner's Ninth with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; he simply finds the perfectly balanced approach to the grand symphonic architecture of this music. Leonidas Kavakos' recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto was no less celebrated, and here, too, balance is central: his interpretation is "the best to appear on CD in years," wrote the music magazine The Guardian. The Brahms concerto, the violinist himself says, is not comparable to other violin concertos—the violin here doesn't merely have to sing melodically. "Here we have this truly incredible connection with the orchestra. It has to sound as homogeneous as possible."

Few literary works had as significant an influence throughout the 19th century as The Boy's Magical Horn (Des Knaben Wunderhorn); its mix of everyday experience and the supernatural and bizarre were a perfect match for the Romantic movement. Before becoming Head of Music at Westminster Cathedral in London in 2021, Simon Johnson was organist at St. Paul's Cathedral, where he performed at a variety of royal events, including the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and the celebrations for her 90th birthday. The Eule organ in the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle, with its four manuals and 72 stops, is also very British and majestic. Its four manuals and 72 stops are modeled on the late-Romantic English town hall organs—in the first Toccata of the season, the Duisburg Philharmonic Choir will provide powerful support. Choir director Marcus Strümpe has included Anton Bruckner, among others, on the program, as the late-Romantic composer, as a virtuoso organist and composer of sacred music, was well versed in the combination of choir and organ. In Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's "Hear My Prayer," a soprano joins the organ and choir: the frequent alternations between solo voice and choir are reminiscent of the "anthem" tradition of the Anglican liturgy. William Harris and Herbert Howells, two prominent representatives of Anglican church music, are also on the program, while Louis Vierne, long-time chief organist at Notre-Dame de Paris, represents the rich organ scene in France. An exuberant romantic richness of sound characterizes his organ symphonies, a genre he himself invented.

The Viennese have the waltz * On the Beautiful Blue Danube* , the Praguers have the tone poem *The Moldau* , and the New Yorkers have the musical *West Side Story* . But we Nurembergers have Richard Wagner's opera * The Mastersingers of Nuremberg * as the "music of our city" – the greatest tribute to the Franconian metropolis ever composed. The prelude to Act 1, relatively short in duration but monumental in its impact, is a veritable symphonic poem that encompasses all of the opera's central plot motifs. Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 3, dedicated to Wagner in its original version, is monumental in every respect. Between these two monuments of late Romanticism is a famous masterpiece of early Classical music: Haydn's virtuoso C major concerto featuring the young Japanese rising star of the cello world, Michiaki Ueno. Benjamin Reiners, GMD in Chemnitz and conductor of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic, will be conducting. He has been a guest with us several times since 2012.

Lil Lacy's flute concerto, written for the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra's long-time flautist, Thomas Jensen, is a work that celebrates life experience and the eternal change we as humans go through.


For Lil Lacy, this work has been a human and artistic journey. “I feel enormous gratitude,” she says. “Firstly, for having been given the opportunity to write a flute concerto, but also for the curiosity and openness with which Thomas has met me. The ongoing dialogue and exchange we have had around the work has been deeply inspiring and has opened up unique layers of sensuality, details and nuances in the music.” Lil Lacy and Thomas Jensen have had a collaboration based on mutual inspiration. From their very first conversations, it was clear that the work should bear the hallmark of a life story – a musical interpretation of the many phases a person goes through from before birth, to childhood, adolescence, adulthood and to a reflection on life. “I didn’t know from the beginning that it would be about life experience. However, this theme arose quite naturally in our conversations, as Thomas has such a rich career and is so curious about so many different musical genres and expressions. Being able to lean into a great life experience, both humanly and artistically, is something that creates perspective and possibilities. For me as a newer composer, it is a great gift to work with such a generous and trusting musician – and human being,” says Lil Lacy. For Thomas Jensen, the work has a deep personal meaning. With a long career behind him, where he has worked with Lil Lacy’s parents, jazz pianist Butch Lacy and singer Birgitte Frieboe, among other things, the collaboration feels almost destined.

Pascal Dusapin on Waves
At first, Pascal Dusapin considered writing a musical theater work based on Virginia Woolf's novel The Waves . It ultimately evolved into a kind of organ concerto, a "duo for organ and orchestra." Dusapin explains: "Very abstract questions occupied me while working on Waves , questions of tectonics—how different surfaces shift against and into each other." The forces of these tectonic plates, turned into music, initially unfold through the interaction and interaction of "normal" trumpets and signal trumpets. The signal trumpets are positioned to the left and right of the organ. They sound "as if from the organ," in the same boat. The organ itself also begins with these notes, with a characteristic rhythm; everything blends together, magnificently orchestrated.

The soundscapes of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra's chamber concerts are as diverse as the personalities of the musicians who perform in them. The demands of the orchestra pit are often determined by the scale and diversity of voices. The Hamburg State Orchestra's Philharmonic Concerts become time-plays, transcending the boundaries of the ordinary: In this concert, Stephen Hough interprets Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, entirely in the spirit of its creator, both as pianist and composer—he replaces the second movement with a newly composed piece inspired by Beethoven's original. Beethoven encounters us today as a mirror of the past and, through Hough, as a part of the here and now. This unabashed musical interplay opens up new perspectives on our musical culture, our thinking and being, and our way of receiving music.

We would like to continue what ended with standing ovations in 2024 this year, and are therefore inviting the orchestra, founded by Claudio Abbado in 1986, back to the Basilica of Eberbach Monastery at the end of August.
