Anton Bruckner war jener fromme Komponist, der mit seinen visionären und weltentrückten Werken wahrlich Berge versetzen konnte. Bei vielen seiner Sinfonien und Messen handelt es sich um singuläre Kunstwerke, die eigentlich für einen Kirchenraum konzipiert waren – denn dort war er zu Hause: „Wer hohe Türme bauen will, muss lange beim Fundament verweilen. […] Eigentlich habe ich – was meine Freunde jetzt „groß“ nennen – nur fertiggebracht, weil ich von Jugend an Ehrfurcht gehabt habe vor allem Echten und Heiligen.“ Besonders in seiner Jugend und in seinen Jahren als Dom-Organist im Linzer Stift St. Florian bildete ebenjenes heilige Fundament das Gesamtopus Johann Sebastian Bachs. Lange eiferte er ihm nach und versuchte ihm künstlerisch gerecht zu werden. Er konnte es wohl auch, denn Bruckners Orgel-Spiel zeichnete sich durch seine technische Finesse aus. Es gelang ihm wie keinem Zweiten, die Linzer Weihestätte mit mächtigen Klangwellen zu füllen. Als Tonkünstler war er ein großer Bewunderer der Musik Bachs und seiner Orgelwerke, wobei insbesondere die Bruckner‘schen Choräle deutlich den Einfluss des großen Meisters zeigen und eine ergreifende Gottesfurcht vermitteln, die im Übrigen in vielen seiner Kompositionen präsent zu sein scheint. Vor allem in seiner Sinfonie Nr. 4, die den Beinamen „Romantische“ trägt, folgt Bruckner dem Ansatz Baruch de Spinozas, dass Gott in der Natur allgegenwärtig sei. Doch was heißt bei Bruckner eigentlich „romantisch“? Die Sinfonie ist durchdrungen von einer tiefen Sehnsucht nach spiritueller Erfüllung und einer Bewunderung für die Natur. Sie entführt in eine Klangwelt voller majestätischer Schönheit und erhabener Größe, die in einem kraftvollen, geradezu galaktischen Schlussakkord kulminiert und damit den Bogen vom Träumerischen und Naturalistischen bis hin zum allumfassend Transzendentalen spannt. Und obwohl in E.T.A. Hoffmanns Aufsatz „Alte und neue Kirchenmusik“ der Komponist Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina gemeint war, könnte das folgende Zitat auch für Bruckners „Vierte“ gestanden haben: „Die Liebe, der Einklang alles Geistigen in der Natur, wie er dem Christen verheißen, spricht sich aus im Akkord, der daher auch erst im Christentum zum Leben erwachte, und so wird der Akkord, die Harmonie, Bild und Ausdruck der Geistergemeinschaft, der Vereinigung mit dem Ewigen, dem Idealen, das über uns thront und doch uns einschließt.“

Anton Bruckner was the pious composer who could truly move mountains with his visionary and otherworldly works. Many of his symphonies and masses are unique works of art that were actually designed for a church space - because that was where he was at home: "If you want to build high towers, you have to spend a long time on the foundations. [...] Actually, I only managed to create what my friends now call "great" because from my youth I had awe of everything that was genuine and holy." Especially in his youth and in his years as cathedral organist in the Linz monastery of St. Florian, that same holy foundation formed the entire opus of Johann Sebastian Bach. For a long time he emulated him and tried to do him artistic justice. And he was probably able to do it, because Bruckner's organ playing was characterized by its technical finesse. He succeeded like no other in filling the Linz sanctuary with powerful waves of sound. As a composer, he was a great admirer of Bach's music and his organ works, with Bruckner's chorales in particular clearly showing the influence of the great master and conveying a moving fear of God that seems to be present in many of his compositions. In his Symphony No. 4 in particular, which is nicknamed the "Romantic", Bruckner follows Baruch de Spinoza's approach that God is omnipresent in nature. But what does "romantic" actually mean for Bruckner? The symphony is permeated by a deep longing for spiritual fulfillment and an admiration for nature. It takes you into a world of sound full of majestic beauty and sublime grandeur, which culminates in a powerful, almost galactic final chord, spanning the spectrum from the dreamy and naturalistic to the all-encompassingly transcendental. And although ETA Hoffmann's essay "Old and New Church Music" was referring to the composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, the following quote could also have stood for Bruckner's "Fourth": "Love, the harmony of everything spiritual in nature, as promised to Christians, expresses itself in the chord, which therefore only came to life in Christianity, and so the chord, the harmony, becomes the image and expression of the spiritual community, of the union with the eternal, the ideal that reigns over us and yet includes us."

Anton Bruckner's work reached its peak in the 8th Symphony - and what a peak it was! Bruckner worked on the composition for a good three years and at the end he had the longest symphony that music history had seen up to that point. At the same time, it was his last completed symphony. In it, Bruckner revealed his artistic maturity and ability to create monumental soundscapes. The composer himself described the mighty finale as "the most important movement of my life" and wrote the exclamation "Hallelujah!" beneath the notes in his autograph. When the main themes of all four movements pile up on top of each other at the end of the fourth movement, it is the end point of an 80-minute symphonic journey and one of the most exciting moments a composer has ever created. Tugan Sokhiev conducts the late-romantic masterpiece, which is one of the cornerstones of the Munich Philharmonic's repertoire.

Considered by many to be his symphonic masterpiece, Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5 represents the culmination of the first period of his time in Vienna. He had relocated to the city in 1868 from Linz, where he had been the organist at the ‘Old’ Cathedral and produced many of his fine choral works.

Curiously, Bruckner never heard this symphony performed by an orchestra. This performance, using instruments of the type that would have been familiar in Vienna at the time, gives us the rare chance to hear the symphony its composer imagined.

“A wayfaring craftsman, who has had a great sorrow, goes out into the world and wanders aimlessly,” said Mahler of his Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (“Songs of a Wayfarer”); returning Artistic Partner Dashon Burton gives voice to this wistful cycle of four Lieder which hint at Mahler’s own experience with unrequited love. In honor of Bruckner’s 200th birthday, Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts one of the best-loved pieces in Bruckner’s repertoire: his “Romantic” Fourth Symphony with its pastoral warmth, stunning brass chorale, and energetic hunt. The Mysterious

Anton Bruckner, known as the creator of enormous symphonic colossi, actually composed chamber music too! The 38-year-old wrote his C minor string quartet as a study project during his lessons with Otto Kitzler. It was only rediscovered in 1950 and premiered shortly afterwards. Bruckner, however, composed the string quintet between his work on the 5th and 6th symphonies after the Viennese conductor and violinist Joseph Hellmesberger had asked him to do so "repeatedly and urgently". The result was a pocket-sized symphony, as Bruckner managed to transfer his symphonic ideas to a small chamber ensemble. When Mozart settled in Vienna in 1781, he met a friend from his days in Salzburg: the horn player Joseph Leutgeb, for whom Mozart not only composed his horn quintet, but later also his four horn concertos. The doubling of the viola shifts the sound balance into the soft middle range and gives the horn quintet its sonorous sound.

In Te Deum, Bruckner is a musical architect building a veritable cathedral—a grand monument chiselled to perfection and brimming with devotion. As he was unable to complete his ninth and final symphony, he suggested that Te Deum replace its last movement. The result, performed by four internationally renowned soloists and the Chœur Métropolitain, is simply majestic.

Among the ten psalm settings by Charles Ives, the setting of Psalm 90 stands out as the highlight and, according to Ives' wife, was the only composition that completely satisfied him. Ives was a master at combining hymn-like elements with the modern sound effects of the choir and creating a fascinating sense of familiarity through the instrumentation with four church bells. Bruckner's F minor Mass follows, a masterpiece of symphonic choral music whose premiere was called off because the conductor considered the work "too long and unsingable." A hasty judgment that Bruckner himself was able to refute with a celebrated premiere under his direction. To mark the Bruckner year, this concert program with Thomas Hengelbrock at the podium can be heard not only in the Isarphilharmonie, but also in the St. Florian Monastery in Upper Austria. In Bruckner's long-standing place of work, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra has been putting on benchmark Bruckner performances since the Celibidache era. Then as now, the Munich Philharmonic Choir takes on the demanding choral parts.

The season opener is also the inauguration concert for Copenhagen Phil's new chief conductor, Christoph Gedschold. Gedschold is one of the most interesting names among the upcoming generation of top German conductors - and in addition to being Copenhagen Phil's new chief conductor, he is also chief conductor of the Leipzig Opera and thus in permanent collaboration with one of the world's absolute leading orchestras, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. The 47-year-old German maestro has a great passion for the religious aura of Bruckner's sonorous symphonic universe.

Since 2018, the International Bruckner Festival Linz has begun annually on 4 September, the birthday of its namesake. The birthday concert to kick off the festival always takes place in Ansfelden, the place where it all began for Anton Bruckner, where he was born in the servants' quarters of the school building and baptised on the same day in the neighbouring parish church.

In 2024, the well-wishers could hardly be more prominent: The Cleveland Orchestra, known as the most "European" of the American orchestras, and its chief conductor Franz Welser-Möst, who hails from Linz, will do the honours and pay tribute to the jubilarian with an open-air performance in the open space between the parish church and courtyard.

This enchanting evening will take place at the prestigious KKL Luzern, starting at 18:30. Presented by the Lucerne Festival, this concert promises an unforgettable experience for classical music enthusiasts.

The program for the evening features two monumental pieces: C. Schumann's Piano Concerto and A. Bruckner's Symphony No. 7, edited by Leopold Nowak. The talented Beatrice Rana will grace the stage with her piano performance, under the baton of the esteemed conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, leading the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

This concert is not just a performance but a celebration of musical mastery and history. Beatrice Rana, who made her debut at Lucerne in 2017 with the LFO, returns to perform Clara Schumann's only piano concerto, a piece composed in her early teens and premiered by herself in 1833. The evening will also pay homage to Anton Bruckner's Seventh Symphony, his most successful work, first conducted by Arthur Nikisch in 1884. This symphony, especially known for its slow second movement composed in anticipation of Richard Wagner's death, showcases Bruckner's deep admiration for Wagner through its harmonic colouring and the use of Wagner tubas.

Since its formation by Claudio Abbado in 2003, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has seen musicians from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) form its core. This summer, around 20 MCO musicians will participate in four orchestra concerts, continuing the tradition of excellence. The collaboration between Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the MCO, including a highly acclaimed recording of W.A. Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, highlights the deep musical connection and shared history on the Lucerne Festival stage.

Join the orchestra to experience the works of Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner – two late-Romantic musical titans – and to celebrate Runnicles’s position as the leading Scottish conductor of his generation.

With his Seventh, the long-suffering Anton Bruckner finally achieved the breakthrough he had longed for. Although this unique, fundamentally lyrical symphony ends in a wonderful, radiant E major, at its centre is the great C-sharp minor Adagio, in which moving funeral music leads to a grandiose climax and immediately transforms into an achingly sublime epitaph for Richard Wagner, who had recently died. Felix Mendelssohn's immortal Violin Concerto also expresses great emotions, but more compactly. Passion, virtuosity, songfulness and, in the finale, cheerful, capricious fairy sprits make it a standard audience favourite, here performed by Janine Jansen and the Gstaad Festival Orchestra under Jaap van Zweden.

The first grand symphonic concert of the summer with the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, conducted by Jaap van Zweden, is on the horizon. Bruckner’s most impassioned, luminous, and almost joyously exuberant Symphony No. 7 takes the spotlight, often dubbed the “Symphony of Tremolos”. The inaugural movement kicks off in a mysterious “primordial mist”, with violins crafting a long, softly played tremolo. The Adagio is especially notable, serving as a tribute to Richard Wagner. Bruckner had just started working on his Symphony No. 7 when his “blessed, dearly beloved, immortal master”, as Bruckner affectionately referred to Wagner, passed away in Venice in February 1883. In the Adagio, Bruckner introduces the Wagner tuba for the first time in one of his compositions, paired with a quote from Wagner’s Te Deum (“… non confundar in aeternum”: “In eternity, I shall not be confounded.”). Until then, the sombre tones of the Wagner tuba had not ventured beyond Wagner’s orchestra pit. Opening the evening is one of the most remarkable violinists of our era, Janine Jansen, Professor at the Haute école de musique Vaud Valais Fribourg (HEMU) in Sion and the newly appointed Artistic Co-Director of the Sion Festival. The Gstaad Festival Orchestra accompanies her in Mendelssohn’s famous E Minor Concerto.

For the tenth time, the Gstaad Conducting Academy participants take centre stage for the grand finale concert. After two weeks of intense work under the exceptional guidance of Jaap van Zweden and Johannes Schlaefli and accompanied by our Gstaad Festival Orchestra, the anniversary edition concludes with a flourish. It’s a special moment for everyone involved, especially as the prestigious Neeme Järvi Prize awaits, an honour that was bestowed just one year after the Academy’s inception for the first time. Santtu opens our 2024 residency with Schumann’s last symphony: the ‘Rhenish’. In 2022 Yunchan Lim became the youngest ever winner of the Van Cliburn Competition, America’s most distinguished contest for outstanding pianists. He makes his Proms debut tonight with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Järvi, performing Beethoven’s final piano concerto, the ‘Emperor’, a work of heroism and virtuosity in which the soloist brings order to a world of sound and fury. The dashing final chapter of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 1 proved enough to herald a major symphonic career, but the programme opens at an opposite extreme, with Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür’s Aditus (‘entrance’ or ‘approach’), a sizzling opener of existential, expressionistic drama.

Beethoven railed against fate in his Symphony No. 5, capturing ideals of fortitude, defiance and bravery in an instant. Welcome June and the leading edge of summer! Our final concert begins with Anton Bruckner’s rousing “Romantic” Symphony, so named by Bruckner himself and inspired by his vision of a day in the life of a medieval village from dawn to dusk. The audience will hear the morning horn call welcoming the day ahead, the thundering hooves of mounted knights departing the castle, the frenzy of a hunt, and the revelry of a village meal and festival to end the long and eventful day. Then, the Symphony closes this concert and its 2023-2024 season with the help of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who gave the world perhaps the second-most well-known four-note opening salvo in the classical music canon with the opening notes of his Piano Concerto no.1, among the most popular and most performed piano concertos. Virtuoso pianist Awadagin Pratt – famed for his formidable technique as well as his love for pranking and colorful concert attire – joins the Symphony for a fiery finish. Join us at the Royal Festival Hall for an unforgettable evening as Alexandre Kantorow, the phenomenal French pianist, takes the stage to perform Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmonia Orchestra. This concert, happening on Thursday, 9 May 2024, at 7:30 pm, promises to be a showcase of intense emotions and poetic musicality, under the baton of conductor Manfred Honeck in his debut with the Philharmonia.

The program will open with Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2, a piece known for its uninterrupted 20 minutes of musical poetry, followed by an interval and then Bruckner's Symphony No. 9. Bruckner's final symphony, left incomplete at his death, offers a profound and soul-searching experience, ending in a sublime peace that serves as a fitting swansong for the composer.

Alexandre Kantorow, celebrated for his gold medal and Grand Prix win at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, has since captivated audiences worldwide, including a sell-out Southbank Centre debut last year. His performance alongside the Philharmonia is eagerly anticipated and is not to be missed.

Tickets are priced between £15 and £70, with priority booking now open and general booking starting at 10 am on Monday, 30 October.
