Singing has always been a priority in the Baltic states, but no other country in Europe has such a rich and diverse choral landscape as Latvia. The State Choir of Latvija, Latvia's largest professional ensemble of its kind, also comes from this environment. With unearthly sound power - from radiant soprano heights to unfathomable bass depths - this impressive ensemble not only causes a sensation in its homeland, but also regularly delights audiences in the world's major music metropolises. The Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra considers itself lucky to be able to welcome the approximately 70 singers from Riga again this season after their visit in the 2023/2024 season. Before its performance in Arnold Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder on July 9 and 10, 2025, the State Choir of Latvija will make an a cappella stopover in the Salvatorkirche. Under the direction of Māris Sirmais, an atmospheric program will be performed, which, starting with the romantic sounds of Anton Bruckner or Edward Elgar, touches on classical modernism and, above all, presents music by contemporary Baltic composers.

Pierre Boulez would have turned 100 this year. The Baden-Baden Festival Hall is celebrating the city's famous honorary citizen in several concerts - this one is certainly one of the highlights. Two "young" works by Pierre Boulez meet Anton Bruckner's great last symphony. It remained unfinished, but opens the door wide to modernity. Pierre Boulez greatly appreciated Bruckner, often conducted him and played a key role in making Bruckner one of the recognized great symphonists today. In addition, "Figures - Doubles - Prismes" by Boulez can be heard. The title of the work says it all: figures are varied, doubled. In the final section, "Prismes", the previous work appears in a new light, a kind of retrospective on the early work in 1957, re-examined in 1968. Then a vocal work by Pierre Boulez: The poems of EE Cummings inspired him to an experiment. Cummings used language beyond its meaning as material for new, complex and ambiguous language compositions. Boulez has transferred the form and structure of these poems into music with his own sovereign mastery, combining text and music into an exciting and poetic whole.

When Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his first cello concerto in 1959, it was created in collaboration with his close friend Mstislav Rostropovich. The legendary cellist learned the concerto by heart in just three days and then made several suggestions for improvements. "If I do that, you'll be the only one who can play it. But I'm writing for everyone," the composer explained his decision not to accommodate the requests. Tugan Sokhiev, a conductor more than just a Shostakovich specialist, combines the work with Bruckner's Seventh in the concert – the symphony that, after its premiere under Arthur Nikisch, finally brought the composer his long-awaited breakthrough.

South Korean composer Unsuk Chin has spent most of her working life in Germany where, as a young artist in Berlin, she absorbed many of the acoustic enthusiasms of European modernists in the late 20th century while swiftly building a distinctive language of her own. Her cello concerto, widely described as a triumph at its first appearance many years ago, has been taken up by many cellists and most recently by our own Alisa Weilerstein. Weilerstein’s mastery of drama and plangent lyricism is the perfect match for Unsuk Chin’s defiant and expressive music.

In their own way, both are farewell works: the double concerto with which Johannes Brahms concluded his orchestral work, and the unfinished Symphony No. 9 by Anton Bruckner. Not every farewell has to be tearful: while Brahms swears his friendship with one of his most loyal artistic companions, Bruckner once again expresses his certainty of faith in music. In addition, we are looking forward to seeing Cornelius Meister, who grew up in Hanover, at the conductor's desk again in this final symphony concert of the season!

Can an insider tip be a milestone? The works in this concert prove it. Bela Bartók is one of those composers who are performed far too rarely in our region - not even such solitary creative highlights as the music for string instruments, percussion and celesta . Folklorism and avant-garde, construction and expressivity, excited motor movement and shocking emotional climaxes - all of this is brought into a unique balance in the work. At the same time, Bartók also reinvented the sound of strings, which is reflected in the unusual title. The half-hour work, which even despises 20th century music, was an unprecedented triumph for Bartók at its premiere and was performed around fifty times in ten different countries within a year. Since then, it has been considered a cult piece of modernism.

»Mahler is a must!« That was absolutely clear to Jakub Hrůša when our journey together began in 2016 – as his late Romantic music is »genetically very close« to both him and ourselves. We have already performed five of his symphonies together in recent years. This programme includes the enchanting »Blumine« movement, which Mahler erased from his autobiographical first symphony and described himself as a »blissful infatuation«: he wrote it in 1884 as a young conductor when he had a crush on a soprano. However, his affection was not returned – and a year later, the »Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen« (»Songs of a Travelling Companion«) emerged from his emotional misery. Together with Konstantin Krimmel, we embark on the restless wanderings of the lovesick artist. After that we say: Not only Mahler is a must. For some time now, Jakub Hrůša has also been working more intensively on Bruckner, as he has recognised that only an orchestra that »really loves this music enough« will be able to make it work. He described the phase in which we immersed ourselves in the Symphony No. 4 in the 2018/2019 season as a »blissful experience with Bruckner« – and it was deepened even further: In the 2020 pandemic, we recorded our Chief Conductor’s personal take on all three versions of the work for a phenomenal and award-winning recording. In this programme, the »Romantic« is performed in the 1878/1880 version – first in Bamberg, as is traditional, of course. Then we will once again become »travelling companions« ourselves and present the works in two of the best halls in Europe: in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and (for the 10th time already!) in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie – where we have come to love and appreciate the inspiring acoustics.

Our former chief conductor Christioph Eschenbach is back on the podium of the Konzerthausorchester and is bringing a highly talented young pianist with him: The 19-year-old Simon Haje will play Beethoven's fourth piano concerto from 1805, which already points in the direction of Romanticism. Robert Schumann was not the only one who loved the work, which is the first of its genre to begin directly with the solo instrument. The audience also liked it extraordinarily well straight away. Bruckner's Symphony No. 3 did not fare so well at first, which is why the easily unsettled composer revised it more often than any other of his nine symphonies. It was not until 1890 (17 years after the completion of the first version) that musicians and Viennese audiences finally stopped objecting and the work was finalised!

When Anton Bruckner wrote his F minor Mass, he had had difficult months behind him. In the spring of 1867, he said, personal and professional setbacks had driven him to the brink of madness. The Linz Cathedral organist suffered a nervous breakdown from which he had to recover in a sanatorium. When he was able to return to work in August of the same year, he composed as if in a frenzy. Delighted by his regained creative power, he achieved a brilliant feat: a Mass of symphonic proportions and shocking expressiveness that was to go down in music history as his "great one." For the SWR Vokalensemble, the performance of this last setting of Bruckner's Mass is a reunion with the conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, the WDR Cologne Radio Choir and the SWR Symphony Orchestra this season.

Happy 85th birthday on 20 February 2025! We wish this to our Honorary Conductor, for whom one thing is for sure: »Music gives you youth, freshness and lots of new beginnings.« Christoph Eschenbach always leaves an impression with his unmistakable aura: he is not a podium matador by any means, but rather comes across at times like a Buddhist monk with his convincing gestures and penetrating eyes full of warm-heartedness. A conductor who prefers silence rather than many words – and one who sees himself as a »musician among musicians«. This results in captivating interpretations with a great sense of mutual understanding, including such works close to his heart as in this year’s programme: Christoph Eschenbach once said that Bruckner was one of his »greatest treasures«. He discovered his love for Bruckner’s music while listening to a radio programme as a boy. And it still fascinates him to this day, so he explores the fascination of Bruckner’s first work with us – this »cheeky little fellow«. It is truly a great blessing that we have been able to come together with such a charismatic artistic personality for such a long time. It is like a longstanding and very close love affair that is constantly being revitalised – also with Saint-Saëns’ »Organ Symphony«: this powerful piece was recorded with Christoph Eschenbach and our orchestra at the Bamberg Cathedral back in 1987 for an audio release. We have every reason to be excited about how the work will sound together with our house organist Christian Schmitt on the concert organ our audience loves so much – after all, our Honorary Conductor remains curious in his old age: »I want to still be conducting when I’m 100, because I might be able to discover even more at the age of 99 than I can at the moment.«

Swiss composer Frank Martin extracts six monologue-like passages from Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s reworking of the medieval, “Everyman. The play of the rich man's death”, which traces the psychological development of the title character – from realisation of his impending death to revolt and despair, through to final acceptance of death. Martin’s essentially tonal, but extremely individually enriched music nestles closely with the text, until it fades off consolingly in C major. Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6 is is somewhat overshadowed by its more popular neighbours. The composer, a great admirer of Richard Wagner, pays homage to his idol with a quote from Tristan and Isolde in the finale. Vladimir Jurowski, taking a strictly chronological approach to the Austrian symphonist’s œuvre, interprets this complex, rhythmically striking piece, described by its composer as the “perkiest” of his symphonies, which will now be performed for only the fourth time in the history of the Musical Academy.

The works of the 3rd Chamber Concerto are all about love and solidarity in word and sound: When Johannes Brahms set about composing the “Two Songs”, it was his close friendship with his long-time companion, the violinist Joseph Joachim. Brahms wanted to create a musical monument to his love and composed the “Spiritual Lullaby” based on a text by Emanuel Geibel for his wedding, but withdrew the composition and revised it. The composer then published both songs together with “Quenched Longing” based on a text by Friedrich Rückert to mark another happy event: the baptism of his godchild, Joseph Joachim’s son. In both compositions, one can hear the unbridled joy of life, born of love. Leoš Janáček's (late) love for Kamilla Stösslová, who was almost 40 years younger than him, was, however, under a completely different, much worse star. In his second string quartet, with the programmatic nickname "Intimate Letters", his feelings for the young woman are omnipresent. Just a year before his death, Janáček left behind the frivolous testimony of a great love: eruptive, provocative and passionate.

Experience a special one-night-only event celebrating Bruckner’s transcendent Eighth Symphony conducted by Peter Oundjian. The Eighth is a spiritual masterpiece with a listening experience akin to entering a majestic cathedral. Music of sheer, breathtaking magnificence, the symphony was rewritten before its premiere when conductor Hermann Levi, one of Bruckner’s longtime champions, looked at the manuscript and deemed the work impossible to perform. The revised version, while magnificent, omits or rewrites some of the most beautiful passages of the original, significantly changing the effect of the piece. In a premiere performance by an American orchestra, the Colorado Symphony performs a new version from scholar Paul Hawkshaw which seeks to restore the original intent of a work Bruckner himself called “the most significant...of my life.”

Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony is a piece that you simply must hear live. It’s sometimes compared to a “cathedral in sound”, and no question, it’s got majesty to spare. But Bruckner was on a lifelong spiritual quest, and Domingo Hindoyan feels a deep kinship with this very personal masterpiece. First, though, we welcome the winner of the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition, and while we don’t yet know who they are, we do know that they’ll be incredible!

A few months after the birth of his son Siegfried, Richard Wagner composed the Siegfried-Idyll with which David Afkham and the Staatsorchester Stuttgart open this symphony concert. It was premiered as a birthday present for his wife Cosima in the stairwell of their villa in Tribschen. Wagner noted in the score: "Tribschen idyll with Fidi birdsong and orange sunrise." Anton Bruckner, eleven years his junior, was a great admirer of Wagner. His Fourth Symphony, which he gave the nickname "Romantic", was his long-awaited breakthrough. Shifting between dreamy passages and waves of dramatic intensification, it heads towards a radiant finale.

Anyone looking for an alternative to the usual version of two violins, viola and violoncello or the wind instruments can discover something new - such as the suite for four horns by Eugène Bozza, whose music captures the beauty of his Provençal homeland. Traditionally, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra welcomes the New Year with an entertaining and sophisticated program in the festive ambience of the Wiesbaden Kurhaus - this time under the direction of the young Lithuanian conductor Izabelė Jankauskaitė . The "Assistant Conductor" of this season's Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, who first attracted international attention in 2022 by winning the Neeme Järvi Prize from the renowned Gstaad Conducting Academy, will present a rousing musical program based on the Viennese waltz with the Brazilian violinist Guido Sant'Anna as part of the "Wiesbaden Master Concerts".

Philippe Jordan is better able to stage great symphonic drama than almost any other conductor of his generation. The music director of the Vienna State Opera is an expert in musical theater, but is also in demand as a guest conductor of international orchestras. When he conducts Anton Bruckner in his anniversary year, the music of the Austrian late romantic will be transformed into a great symphonic narrative, full of references to Richard Wagner, whom he admired so much. Bruckner's Eighth, his last completed symphony, was described by the composer himself as a "mystery." Jordan will surely reveal some of its secrets.

Herbert Blomstedt sees Anton Bruckner as “the greatest symphonist since Beethoven”. The conductor is recognised worldwide as an authority on this music, acclaimed for his affinity to Bruckner’s distinctive, darkly-glowing tonal language and its powerful climaxes. Herbert Blomstedt now addresses the composer’s last symphony, in which Bruckner bids a very personal farewell to the world. In the concert’s first half, Leif Ove Andsnes is the soloist in Mozart’s festive Piano Concerto No. 21.
