Bruckner and Volkov, Prokofiev and Gringolts: two superb musicians, two stupendous works.
Prokofiev’s music can be on the gnarly side, often as spiky and unpredictable as the composer himself. But his Violin Concerto No.1 is downright romantic, especially in its dreamy opening movement. Described as ‘sensational’ by reviewers, violinist Ilya Gringolts has been universally acclaimed for his performance of this concerto. Ilan Volkov, in his first concert as our new Principal Guest Conductor, is equally renowned for his performances of Bruckner’s symphonies. Here he leads one of the composer’s finest, noble in construction, and with a touching tribute to Wagner at its centre. A stirring and uplifting experience is guaranteed.

Anton Bruckner dismissed his Symphony in F minor as a mere “student work”. Yet it is far more than that. The first symphony he completed, it reveals a composer setting out with extraordinary ambition – yet it was never performed during his lifetime. For conductor Simone Young, it testifies to Bruckner’s hope of establishing himself as one of the great symphonists of the 19th century: “It promises that perseverance and dedication to one’s calling will ultimately prevail.” This will be the symphony’s first performance by the BRSO. The concert will open with Bach’s Ricercar a 6 in Anton Webern’s colourful orchestral arrangement. In between the two works will be one of the great classics of the repertoire, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor – performed by Augustin Hadelich, whose intensity and sensitivity have established him as one of the outstanding violinists of our time.

Austrian composer Bruckner may have left his Symphony No 9 incomplete, but it still serves as a summation of his life, heard here in its three-movement form. The overwhelming Adagio stands as the work’s emotional, even religious, heart, while the pounding Scherzo is among the most bombastic and inspiring of anything Bruckner conceived.

Festive radiance, symphonic solemnity and challenging virtuosity maintain a perfect balance in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto in C major. The work opens the concert given by the Staatskapelle Berlin conducted by Christian Thielemann which features a benchmark interpretation by the legendary pianist Rudolf Buchbinder who can look back on a career of more than 60 years. The second half is devoted to Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 whose sonorous natural idylls including the “song of the great tit Zizipe” (Bruckner) communicate a “religious and mysterious Romanticism à la Lohengrin” in the words of the composer.

Mozart’s Symphony No. 32 in G major is one of his shortest contributions to this genre. He probably used it as an overture for the opera La villanella rapita by his Italian contemporary Francesco Bianchi. Mozart contributed not only overtures, but also arias to stage works by other composers. Soprano Claudia Muschio presents two of these together with conductor Lothar Zagrosek, who is once again leading the Stuttgart State Orchestra almost twenty years after his departure as General Music Director. Anton Bruckner was deeply impressed by Mozart’s somnambulistic ability: “I deeply admire Mozart and try to preserve his clarity and beauty in my own work.“ The Austrian Romantic surprised his contemporaries with this confession. Throughout his life, Bruckner was accused of not structuring his compositions clearly enough. As a result, he reworked almost all of his nine symphonies several times. A rare exception is his Seventh, which was immediately well received. Bruckner succeeded in creating an exceptionally balanced work - with impressive themes and dramatic progressions.

Here, motivated amateur musicians can once again play alongside the professionals. Bruckner's Te Deum also has an epic quality: for the deeply religious composer, this powerful hymn was his ticket to heaven. For this performance, the singers from the opera chorus and the Wiesbaden City Choir will join forces.

Alongside Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner is among the composers who significantly shaped the symphony genre in the 19th century. For him, a trained organist, they were always also spiritual expressions. Bruckner's last work, his Ninth Symphony, is akin to a cathedral in its ambition. He composed his Ninth for approximately nine years until his death, creating his symphonic legacy, which he is said to have dedicated "to the dear Lord."

We look forward to immersing ourselves in diverse musical worlds under the direction of Susanna Mälkki – including that of Mozart, for whom play was an important part of his life: He particularly loved billiards and skittles, as well as chess and trick-tock – or he would sit at the card table and gamble with Tarock, Brandeln, Piquet, or Pharaoh. This enthusiasm is also audible in his often playful music. Together with Bertrand Chamayou as soloist, we will perform one of his most popular works: Piano Concerto No. 23 from 1786, which was composed around the same time as his comic opera "Le nozze di Figaro" – a fact that is particularly evident in the surprising scene changes of the finale. Also on the program in Würzburg: A composition by Liszt, who wrote significant symphonic poems. He drew inspiration for his last contribution to this genre, entitled "From the Cradle to the Grave," from a drawing by a Hungarian painter.

Béla Bartók left his homeland of Hungary and emigrated to the United States in 1940. The war and the political situation in his homeland meant that he could not bring himself to stay in Europe. Nevertheless, he never felt at home in New York, where he settled. In the Third Piano Concerto, one can perhaps also trace a strong homesickness. Bartók's music is in many ways rooted in traditional Hungarian music, even though it has its own very personal musical language. This is also evident in the Third Piano Concerto, which, despite being written when the composer was ill with leukemia, has a bright and dance-like character. The concerto was the last work Bartók wrote, and he never got to experience the premiere in 1946.

The composition of the Ninth Symphony , begun in 1889 but completed only in the first three movements, coincided with Bruckner's final years, marked by solitude and a progressive decline. He seemed to escape both the triumphant premieres of his compositions and new love affairs, such as Karoline, daughter of Josephine Lang, an old flame of 25 years earlier, who had wanted to marry him but refused to convert to Catholicism, and Adele, the daughter of a decorator, known as the veiled lady at his funeral. Despite this, worsening nervous problems forced the composer, in the autumn of 1890, to ask the emperor for retirement as court organist and for a six-month sick leave from the Conservatory, which granted him a pension on 15 January. Other public honors, such as the appointment of Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Vienna on November 7, 1891, brought some moments of joy in the difficult final years of Bruckner's life. As if foreseeing his approaching death, he was gripped by the frantic desire to complete his Ninth Symphony . In the last three years of his life, Bruckner's health worsened, and despite everything, he resumed his university classes on October 29, 1894, in dramatic condition. Despite his precarious physical condition, Bruckner continued to compose, and on November 30, he completed the Adagio and began the Finale of the Ninth . On Christmas Eve, he sat at the organ for the last time in Klosternburg, concluding his performance with a false note after his foot slipped on the pedalboard. On October 11, 1896, while sitting at the piano, he was working on the Finale of the Ninth , when he felt a strong shiver, asked for hot tea, took to his bed and died, without being able to complete this last symphonic work. The Symphony , performed posthumously in Vienna on February 11, 1903 under the direction of Ferdinand Löwe, who had prepared a revision of the first three movements, was revived in the original version, this time revised by Robert Haas, under the direction of Siegmund von Hausegger in Munich on April 2, 1932. As for the last movement, the “SPCM” Finale will be performed, about which Dr. John Philips, author of the present edition, wrote in his program notes:

After the New Year's Concert with Beethoven's 9th Symphony, including the jubilant "Ode to Joy," Stefan Blunier , a regular and welcome guest in Duisburg, returns to the podium of the Philharmonic a few months later for a no less overwhelming symphony: Anton Bruckner's 7th Symphony, a tremendous cathedral of sound and a moving reaction to the death of Richard Wagner, whom he admired and for him the "blessed, ardently beloved immortal master." Before this mighty work with its overwhelming aesthetic, the program features a piece that Carl-Sönje Montag describes with the words "virtuosity, elegance, and joy." He is actually the deputy principal bassoonist of the Duisburg Philharmonic, but for this concert he switches sides and stands as soloist in front of the orchestra. The first movement is "inviting and downright life-affirming," says Montag, "with its virtuoso passages and large interval leaps; the final rondo is folksy and humorous," while in the slow middle movement, "the cantable bassoonist's soul is allowed to sing out in melodic arches reminiscent of Hummel's teacher, Mozart." In short: for Carl-Sönje Montag, the piece is one of the three most important bassoon concertos in the Classical-Romantic repertoire, alongside those of Carl Maria von Weber and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart—not bad company.

Spring Concert: Bruckner's Seventh Symphony

Herkulessaal der Residenz

Bruckner's Second Symphony is often referred to as the "Symphony of Pauses." But do not worry: these pauses are not silent, but full of tension and give the music room to breathe. A music that was initially considered unplayable by contemporaries. The Vienna Philharmonic initially rejected the work, deeming it far too long. Bruckner shortened it, rented the large hall at the Musikverein at his own expense, rehearsed thoroughly with the orchestra - and was successful. And what a success it was, the applause of the premiere audience on October 26, 1773, seemed never-ending. Bruckner himself later referred to it as the "most memorable day of my life." Today, the symphony is somewhat overshadowed by its successors, but unjustly so. Everything that Bruckner enthusiasts appreciate: the grand arcs of tension, the delicate as well as the powerful moments, the abrupt pauses and new beginnings - they are all already present here. Christoph Eschenbach is considered a Bruckner specialist; that is why we have invited him to conduct it.

Applause like this was new for the notoriously unsuccessful Anton Bruckner: After the premiere of his Seventh Symphony, he was “applauded for a quarter of an hour at the end” – and the work’s appeal endures to this day. Herbert Blomstedt suspects that the popularity of the Seventh lies in the fact that its themes are simple and have a “Wagnerian breadth”. Blomstedt himself is an authority on Bruckner, as his concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker have repeatedly demonstrated. His performances are acclaimed for their fine sensitivity for the emotional depth and the dramatic tension of this music.

Raphael Attila Vogl demonstrates the diverse sounds of the organ in a program that brings works from Bach to Bruckner to life through impressive transcriptions. The opening piece is Carl Maria von Weber's Overture to "Der Freischütz," which surprises with dramatic contrasts and a romantic sound ideal - in the version for organ, it unfolds with an almost orchestral force. Johann Sebastian Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto in G major, originally intended for strings, becomes a virtuosic challenge in the organ transcription, emphasizing the clarity and brilliance of the Baroque period. With an excerpt from Max Reger's String Quartet in E-flat major, Vogl adds a chamber music touch that preserves the sonic intimacy of the original while exploring the vastness of the instrument. The conclusion is the finale from Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 - a monumental work whose transcendent power gains even more grandeur in the organ arrangement. Invited by the Dresden Philharmonic.

Anton Bruckner spoke to the conductor Arthur Nikisch about divine visions – perhaps this is a key to understanding his mystical choral motets? Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is also no stranger to periods of retreat and inner contemplation. Both composers transport their listeners to another world. It remained his last major orchestral work, which Johannes Brahms completed in 1887—a "final act of stupidity," as he announced to his publisher Simrock with characteristic irony. Brahms dedicated the Double Concerto for Violin and Cello to the violinist Joseph Joachim, with whom he had been friends for decades. This friendship had recently reached a crisis, however, and to break the ice between them, Brahms sent the score to his friend. Joachim gratefully accepted the offer; thus, a rapprochement was established, and the furious finale proved to be a veritable celebration of reconciliation between the two. A uniquely well-coordinated duo, the siblings Tanja and Christian Tetzlaff, come to Lübeck for this double concerto.

This year’s Remembrance Concert commemorating the destruction of Dresden on 13 February 1945 features Igor Stravinsky’s »Mass«, a deliberately sober, liturgically reduced Mass setting. The composer did not produce a bombastic celebration of Christ’s sacrifice but rather a piece of quiet contemplation. Anton Bruckner’s Ninth feels rather like a testimonial. The composer dedicated the symphony to »our dear Lord« as an act of the deepest devotion. The three completed movements take us on an emotional journey from loss and devastation to hope before the unfinished work fades into silence. Daniele Gatti unites these two compositions to create a poignant tapestry of mourning, remembrance and contemporary spirituality.
