Between 1905 and 1934, Gustav Holst worked as music director at St. Paul's Girls' School in London. When a soundproof study was set up for him there, he wrote his Suite in C as a thank you, later renamed the St. Paul's Suite. It begins with a lively jig, followed by a cheerful, light-hearted ostinato movement. In the third movement there is a sudden change in character to a gloomy, melancholic gesture, until the suite returns to a light-hearted and light-hearted character in the fourth movement with the processing of two English folk songs.

Thomas Trotter returns to Huddersfield with a programme centred on his transcriptions of works by Holst. Two contrasting pieces by Duruflé open the recital, as featured on Trotter’s acclaimed recording from King’s College Cambridge, and Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours ends on a playful note.

Holst’s Second Suite is among the most beloved of the classic wind band repertory and if it weren’t for the folk tunes they were based on, they may as well be music for a British royal. Other material presented on this program creates distinct moods, from the hustle and bustle of Lisa DeSpain’s Bicycle Shop to the calm playfulness of Samuel Coleridge Taylor’s Children’s Intermezzo.

For the second concert we present an all-British program to honor the land of Mr. Zander's birth. First, Purcell's Chacony in G Minor as realized by Benjamin Britten, who was an early mentor to the conductor and a significant guide to his musical development. British cellist Alexander Baillie, a quintessential, complete musician, returns yet again to Boston! Baillie's enveloping warmth and hugeness of spirit are exactly the qualities the Elgar Cello Concerto requires. With this performance, he returns for his EIGHTH concerto appearance with the BPO (he has played Dvořák, Dutilleux, Lutoslawski, Elgar, Bridge, Haydn C Major and Shostakovich First). And he doesn't just play the Elgar: he IS the Elgar Concerto, as you will hear and see.

Elgar’s ‘stout and steaky’ picture-postcard scenes of London life join anniversary composer Holst’s Hammersmith, commissioned for the BBC Military Band, in saluting the city. Vaughan Williams’s teacher Stanford (who died 100 years ago) completes the programme, with a selection of reflective songs performed by leading British baritone Christopher Maltman.

The Cloud Messenger recounts an ancient tale in which a man sends a message of love to his distant wife via a passing cloud. This performance, marking 150 years since Holst’s birth, comes after Elgar’s ever-popular, bittersweet Cello Concerto and the gentle exhalations of Jonathan Harvey’s Tranquil Abiding, inspired by Buddhist meditation.

Let us serenade you with the melodies of Strauss’ Serenade, a short and sweet tribute to romance directly influenced by the composer’s grand predecessor, Mozart. The ode to lyricism continues with Holst’s Lyric Movement performed by Principal Viola Brant Bayless, who captures the depth and freedom of the piece. In a showcase of his instrumental prowess, Bayless follows with Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 5—the viola pitted in a melancholy monologue against the rich, dark timbres of the wind instruments. Finally, descend into Schoenberg’s achingly beautiful Transfigured Night, directly inspired by Richard Dehmel’s poem. This story tells of heartbreak and redemption as a woman confesses to her new partner that she is carrying another man’s child, yet he responds that their love will shape this child into one who is theirs. They embrace and continue their walk with a new transfigured perspective on life under the light of the moon and stars.

We close our 80th Masterworks season with a return appearance from Melissa White, the HSO’s 2023-2024 Joyce C. Willis Artist in Residence performing the soaring melodies of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. According to Carlos Simon, his intent for Amen! was “to re-create the musical experience of an African American Pentecostal church service that I enjoyed being part of while growing up in this denomination.” Each movement flows into the next to reflect the way the worship service flows. Inspired by the astrological characters of each planet, Holst’s The Planets bears the richness and emotional warmth of humanity, encapsulating the theme of the entire program bringing people together through the spirit of music.
