In their new program, "Albion, Now," they take the audience on a journey through the contemporary British music scene. Christian Mason's vibrant "Sardinian Songbook" encounters Errollyn Wallen's lyrical sound language of "Five Postcards," Anna Meredith's wild swarm of flies in "Tuggemo," in which strings and electronica buzz around each other, and other discoverable new creations from Great Britain—formerly known as Albion. ROCO continues its Unchambered Series with an intimate performance featuring harpist Laurie Meister, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Julia Ideson Library. Set in one of Houston’s most iconic historic spaces, this program weaves together music and memory to highlight the expressive beauty of the harp and the building’s storied past. The concert includes a newly commissioned piece by Errollyn Wallen that is sponsored by The Houston Public Library Foundation. The work is created in homage to the library’s many murals painted by women employed by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression, capturing the enduring spirit of creative resilience.

For the first time, Iceland, with the Harpa in Reykjavik, is participating in the European Concert Hall Organization's annual "Rising Stars" program, which sends young artists on tour through the continent's major concert halls. And with Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, a singer from the Nordic island nation was directly nominated. She loves the poetic, mystical traditions of her country and is currently performing brilliantly not only on the major opera stages in Basel and Berlin, but also realizing unusual projects as a photographer and video artist.

PCMS delights in highlighting the Jasper Quartet, one of today’s preeminent American string quartets which also happens to call Philadelphia home. Hailed as being “expressively assured and beautifully balanced” (Gramophone), the ensemble is joined for this concert by Julietta Curenton, a flutist known for her “bold and dramatically characterized playing” (Dallas Morning News) and a “tone that draws in one’s ear with sounds and ideas that simply cannot be resisted” (Philadelphia Inquirer).

We start where it all began, back in 2015, with the first piece the ensemble ever played in the Queen Elizabeth Hall – Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade. This wild orchestral ride brims with energy and excitement, and has become something of a signature piece for the orchestra who are long time champions of the composer.

Then it’s an all-star line-up for one of the most renowned works for multiple soloists by Beethoven, as Tai Murray, Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Isata Kanneh-Mason join the orchestra to play Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. The three musicians, all alumni of the orchestra, come together for the first time, bringing their extraordinary talent to this mighty piece.

The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music proudly announces its grand finale event for the 2024 season, taking place on Sunday, August 11, at 7 PM at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. This symphonic journey, titled "Passage," features an exhilarating lineup of guest artists and premieres that promise to captivate and inspire audiences.

Highlighting the evening is violin virtuoso Philippe Quint, who will grace the stage with his exceptional talent. The program includes the West Coast premieres of four remarkable compositions, each bringing its unique cultural and musical narratives to the forefront.

The concert kicks off with "Baião N Blues" by Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad. This piece is a vibrant fusion of the traditional Brazilian Baião rhythm and the soulful essence of American blues, showcasing Assad's flair for blending diverse musical genres.

Following this, Belize-born British composer Errollyn Wallen's "Violin Concerto" will make its West Coast debut. This concerto, a product of a years-long collaboration with Philippe Quint, is deeply personal, reflecting Quint's childhood memories and showcasing his technical prowess and emotional depth.

American composer Pierre Jalbert's "Passage," also receiving its West Coast premiere, pays a modern tribute to Beethoven's Fourth Symphony. Jalbert's composition is a journey through contrasting movements, bridging centuries and evoking a profound sense of the present.

The finale of the evening, "Mariachitlán" by Mexican composer Juan Pablo Contreras, transports the audience to the vibrant streets of Jalisco, Mexico. This piece is a celebration of mariachi music, infused with the spirit and traditions of the region, and promises to end the festival on a high note.

Join the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (ASMF) as they celebrate the centenary of their founder, the renowned Lincoln-born violinist and conductor Sir Neville Marriner, with a special homecoming concert. Sir Neville Marriner, who was born in Lincoln and attended Lincoln School, founded the ASMF in 1958. Under his leadership, the ensemble revolutionized the classical music scene with their exceptional performances and extensive discography. This concert will honor Marriner’s legacy with a program that reflects his early championing of Baroque music and his significant contributions to the classical genre.

Respighi’s imaginative orchestrations of lute music and Bloch’s challenge to his skeptical students bookend a program of works influenced by traditions of an earlier style of music. In between, Jennifer Corning Lucio, Fort Worth Symphony’s principal oboe, performs Vaughn Williams’ pastoral oboe concerto and the baroque concerto grosso form gets a jazz-inflected rethinking by Errolyn Wallen, “the renaissance woman of contemporary British music.”

Reinvention has always been a theme within classical music—
be it Handel blatantly reusing his own tunes, Mendelssohn giving us his own take on Bach, or Stravinsky ‘remixing’ the classical form. Bringing that tradition right up to date is Dido’s Ghost, effectively providing a sequel to Purcell’s masterpiece Dido and Aeneas, which is performed in its entirety, as if a flashback, in Wallen’s work. Dido’s Ghost bridges worlds and eras, and past blurs into present in an acclaimed new opera that’s direct from premiere performances in London and Edinburgh.

A Far Cry puts that theory to the test with a program of string trios. Sterling Elliott is young, but he has already been making a name for himself—he was the winner of the Senior Division of the 2019 National Sphinx Competition and a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient. He will join Marcelo and YOUR orchestra to perform Elgar’s iconic Cello Concerto, made famous by the historic performances by Jacqueline du Pré. Written in the aftermath of the First World War, it reflects Elgar’s grief and sense of loss through its memorable melodies and lush harmonies.

Jean Sibelius’ Karelia Suite opens with stirring, folk themes celebrating the rich heritage of Finland. Dani Howard’s Trombone Concerto, performed by virtuoso soloist Peter Moore [BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist 2015–17], illuminates the resilience of the human spirit in times of hardship. Errollyn Wallen’s Mighty River, composed to mark the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade in Britain, flows with rhythmic vitality and cultural resonance, echoing the cries and echoes of human hearts and voices. The programme culminates in Borodin’s hypnotic and theatrical Polovtsian Dances. Under the direction of dynamic conductor Michael Seal [Associate Conductor, CBSO], this concert invites audiences to feel the pulse of society, the drama of human experience, and the exhilarating power of music.

The 13-member Palaver Strings and Noe Music’s dear friend Nicholas Phan join forces for A Change Is Gonna Come, a stirring exploration of America’s rich legacy of protest songs. This program, based on their 2024 GRAMMY-nominated album, weaves together traditional anthems and contemporary works inspired by social movements and historical events, including Nico Muhly’s Stranger, Akenya Seymour’s Fear the Lamb, and the premiere of Errollyn Wallen’s Protest Songs. Spanning genres and eras, the performance confronts our past and present, celebrating protest as one of our most precious rights. As Gramophone notes, “There is liberation in the timelessness of these songs and settings… a tapestry of protest.”
