Inspired by Federico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria, Sweet Charity explores the turbulent love life of Charity Hope Valentine, a hopelessly romantic but comically unfortunate dance hall hostess in New York City. With a tuneful, groovy, mid-1960s score by Cy Coleman, sparkling lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and a hilarious book by Neil Simon, Sweet Charity captures all the energy, humor, and heartbreak of Life in the Big City for an unfortunate but irrepressible optimist.

In the late 1940s, Stine, a bookish writer of detective stories, struggles to adapt his crime novel into a workable screenplay. As Stine tries to maintain some integrity in the backstabbing world of Hollywood, his protagonist, a hardboiled private eye named Stone, fights for survival in a city full of criminals and opportunists. The musical explores two parallel storylines with a clever design choice: Stine’s world is in full color, while Stone’s appears in black and white. With wit, humor, and a fantastic Cy Coleman score, City of Angels captures the snappy dialogue of a Raymond Chandler novel and the glitzy showmanship of classic Hollywood; the result is a crowd-pleasing musical unlike any other.

Winner of five 1990 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and boasting a swinging score by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity), City of Angels tells the dueling stories of successful young writer Stine, struggling to maintain creative control of his latest crime novel as it's being adapted into a major motion picture, and the hard-boiled adventures of his Private Investigator protagonist, Stone. Keeping the two worlds separate is hard enough, but when the line between Stine's reality and Stone's film-noir fantasy begins to blur, hilarity and thrills ensue. A glorious musical comedy which is equal parts love letter to Golden Age Hollywood and homage to classic detective yarns such as The Maltese Falcon, City of Angels will keep your toes tapping as you sit on the very edge of your seat.

Sweet Charity follows the romantic trials and tribulations of Charity Hope Valentine, “a girl who wanted to be loved.” Charity is a partner-for-hire at a dance hall in New York City and although the job may be decidedly undesirable, her hopeful romanticism and unfailing optimism help her reach for a life beyond. In the past, she’s been strung along and hung out to dry by a series of bad relationships and lousier men. When she meets the shy and neurotic Oscar, seemingly from another world, will she finally find true love at last?
