With his work described as “An exacting and fascinating meeting of art, music and science” (Jazzwise) and “extraordinary listening experiences” (Westdeutsch Zeitung), composer, performer, and sound installation artist Matthew Goodheart interleaves live performance and immersive sound environments in a hybrid world of composition, improvisation, interactive electronics, and spatial sound installation. Utilizing a technique known as “reembodied sound,” in which instruments are actuated via tactile transducers so that they appear to sound autonomously, he investigates the interrelationship between acoustics, space, sound production, and technology. In this concert, he will present a set of recent solo works combining transducer-actuated metal percussion and piano in an evolving series of eclectic and ethereal soundscapes.

Haydn’s exuberant and life-affirming oratorio The Creation tops off the summer’s theme “The Adoration of the Earth.” During his first visit to London, Haydn attended one of the Handel festivals held in Westminster Abbey. He was so overwhelmed by Messiah and Israel in Egypt that he determined to compose an oratorio himself that could stand alongside Handel’s supreme masterpieces in the genre. The work was an immediate success and received many performances all over Europe. As in opera and most oratorios, The Creation has named characters. Soloists represent the archangels Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael, and later Adam and Eve. Parts One and Two describe the six days of Creation. In Part Three, Adam and Eve make their appearance and celebrate the newly created world and their happiness together.

“At every turn, he effortlessly communicates his delight in the music he leads,” raved the St. Louis Post-Dispatch of conductor Nicholas McGegan, whose effervescent concerts are always highlights of the season. Joining him is the Siberian-born violinist Maxim Vengerov, recognized as one of the world’s greatest string players. Claiming to have heard a performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto while still in the womb, the precocious Vengerov was taken at age 5 to meet a famous violin teacher. When she asked "Do you have strength in these hands,?" he punched her in the stomach as hard as he could. "Fortunately, she was in a good mood that day, and she accepted me as a student," he said later. Vengerov will play Mendelssohn’s flowingly lyrical Violin Concerto, a work full of beautiful tunes and a joyously vibrant finale. It’s no wonder this work has been an audience favorite since its premiere in 1845.
