The Frenchman Pierre Boulez and the American Elliott Carter met for the first time in Paris in the early 1950s. A friendship for life immediately developed between these composers. The Ensemble Musikfabrik and Bas Wiegers now commemorate these two important composers of modernism with cult pieces of new music. And one of the soloists is pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who owes a lot to Boulez and Carter.

Called “a brilliant musician and an extraordinary visionary” by The Wall Street Journal, pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard is renowned for his masterfully intuitive performances of works both cutting edge and deeply historic. This afternoon performance of musical fantasias is a prime example, opening with a piece by J. P. Sweelinck—a foundational Dutch fantasia composer of the late 16th century—and proceeding through roughly 400 years of works from the expansive, evolving tradition. Established in 1988 by Ralph Kirshbaum in memory of the great cellist Pierre Fournier, this international award aims to assist exceptional young cellists. Selected finalists take part in live auditions over two days in front of our distinguished panel of judges. American cellist Annie Jacobs-Perkins is our 2023 Winner.

Inspired by unfinished symphonic sketches by Schubert, Luciano Berio decided to “cement the gaps” with his own musical reflections and restorations and created a 20th century classic. Oliver Knussen, inspired by Shakespeare’s Ophelia chanting “snatches of old tunes”, snatched snippets of Schumann and Debussy for his highly compressed set of dances. In the 21st century Elliott Carter’s last orchestral piece, a “series of short interrelated episodes”, is an often lyrical and moving farewell to life, whilst a similar dark beauty occupies the genre defying music of North West based Phoenix Rousiamanis. Manoj Kamps makes their debut with Ensemble 10:10.

 ATHELAS has the great honor of inviting to a concert with the recipient of the Léonie Sonnings Musikpris 2024, the French-Swiss flautist Emmanuel Pahud. The concert on March 10 in Den Sorte Diamant is not only the first award recipient gives in connection with the award reception, but also the only one in concert in Copenhagen. We are proud to have conductor Anu Tali on stage at this fireworks display of a concert.
