The clarinet also sent Beethoven and Brahms into ecstasy, but here at this portrait concert, the Ensemble's new clarinetist, Frederik von Würden, shows that there are other and more expressions in the diverse Clarinet. Monet blue and other pastel colors by Debussy, classical-sounding chamber music by Mel Bonis, the great romantic sound in Paul Juon's trio, the completely modern, where all the outer limits of the clarinet are almost blown up in a solo sonata by Denisov and the oriental tone language by Katchaturian.

Faculty artist Joaquín Valdepeñas conducts top students in Russian composer Edison Denisov’s adventurous 1961 piece for eleven wind instruments and timpani, followed by Mozart’s sublime Serenade for 13 Winds known as the “Gran Partita.” It’s one of the composer’s most beloved works in any genre and undoubtedly one of the greatest masterpieces ever written for wind band. In Peter Shaffer’s play Amadeus, the character Salieri gives a vivid and emotional description of the adagio movement, saying” "On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse - bassoons and basset horns - like a rusty squeezebox. Then suddenly - high above it - an oboe, a single note, hanging there unwavering, till a clarinet took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight! This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I'd never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling. It seemed to me that I was hearing a voice of God."

This special recital, part of her Master of Music studies under the guidance of Taimur Sullivan, promises to be a memorable showcase of talent and musical exploration. Accompanied by Nathan Canfield on piano, Natalia will present a diverse program including her own arrangement of J.S. Bach's Flute Sonata in E Minor, BWV 1034, Roshanne Etezady's "Streetlegal," a unique adaptation of Maurice Ravel's Sonatine for Soprano Saxophone and Piano by David Walter, John Anthony Lennon's "Distances Within Me," and Edison Denisov's Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano.

This event is scheduled for Monday, June 3, 2024, at 8:30pm CDT, in the Regenstein Master Class Room, located within the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, 60 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, IL 60208.
