Philip Glass Piano Etudes

Gaillard Center

One of the most influential composers of our time, Philip Glass created his complete set of twenty piano etudes as both a personal challenge and a musical diary. Presented in celebration of Glass's 90th birthday, this rare, large-scale performance brings his complete set of twenty piano etudes to life, featuring ten pianists including Timo Andres, Inon Barnatan, Aaron Diehl, Lara Downes, Conor Hanick, Daniela Liebman, Jenny Lin, Christian Sands, Demetrius Doctor and Tom Hicks. Philip Glass will not be performing. Produced by Pomegranate Arts.

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus, directed by Nicholas Quardokus, will join the CSO and talented soloists for this uplifting season finale concert weekend. Haydn’s “London” Symphony and Dvořák’s Te Deum are also included in the roster of music from renowned composers.

Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy

Glass has written more than 30 operas, 14 symphonies, 13 concertos, numerous soundtracks to films, nine string quartets, a growing body of work for solo piano and organ, and collaborated with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Leonard Cohen and David Bowie. He describes himself as a composer of “music with repetitive structures” and says that “If I’m to be remembered for anything, it will probably be for the piano music, because people can play it.”
