Opening Night welcomes the return of GRAMMY Award-winning Aoife O’Donovan whose enchanting melodies and evocative lyrics weave an unforgettable musical tapestry about the women heroes in her piece America, Come. This work is inspired by the lives and letters of the Women’s Suffrage Movement in a musical exploration of voting rights for women during the 1920’s. Then, immerse yourself in the soundscape of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 composed during his heroic election into the Bohemian Academy of Sciences. Every note in the Symphony explores a journey through landscapes and stirring melodies, sure to captivate you with its grandeur and passion.

Aoife O’Donovan will then take the stage with Hawktail as her band, performing songs from the Grammy-award winning musician’s 4th studio album All My Friends (out March 22, 2024).

A century after winning the right to vote, how much has really changed for American women? That question lies at the heart of Grammy Award- winning singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan’s upcoming album All My Friends, set for release this March. Inspired by the letters and speeches of suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt, the album ponders the nation’s evolution amidst a lush soundscape featuring brass, orchestra, girls’ choir, and O’Donovan’s own mysterious and compelling voice. The 2022 Folk Alliance International Song of the Year winner, who was last seen at Spoleto in 2019 performing with her acclaimed trio, I’m With Her, is joined by members of the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra for a musical event 100 years in the making.

A Boston-area native, she returns to Celebrity Series following her celebrated 2021 Celebrity Series at Home streaming concert with Chris Thile.

GRAMMY® Award-winning artist Aoife O’Donovan operates in a thrilling musical world beyond genre. Deemed “a vocalist of unerring instinct” by the New York Times, she has released two critically-acclaimed and boundary-blurring solo albums including In the Magic Hour, which Rolling Stone hailed for its “Impressionistic, atmospheric songs [that] relay their narratives against gorgeous pastoral backdrops.” O’Donovan spent the Winter and Spring of 2021 in the studio with acclaimed producer Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Rhiannon Giddens) recording Age of Apathy, her third full-length solo album, out January 21, 2022.

Under the baton of Music Director Eric Jacobsen, the VSO will perform Copland's suite of music from the ballet, expanded for full orchestra, bringing to life the sounds that have deeply influenced the American cultural landscape. The evening will also highlight the Grammy Award-winning songwriter Aoife O’Donovan, who, alongside her husband Eric Jacobsen, will explore the theme of voting rights for women through her musical piece "America, Come." Inspired by historical figures Carrie Chapman Catt and President Woodrow Wilson, O’Donovan's performance promises to be a powerful tribute to the suffrage movement.

The concert will open with Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man," setting the stage for a night of profound musical exploration. GRAMMY Award–winning singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan joins the ensemble to perform America, Come, an original suite inspired by the lives, letters, and speeches of Carrie Chapman Catt and President Woodrow Wilson in the summer of 1920, when the suffragists made their pivotal march to Tennessee. The program opens with the brisk, timeless overture to Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.
