The story of the moonstruck character of Pierrot in Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire elicited a set of paintings by artist Kirsty Matheson, commissioned for Spitalfields Festival and the Hebrides Ensemble, and showcased through digital projections this evening.

Hear Schoenberg’s mesmerising, expressionistic work in this concert, alongside music by Scottish-Greek composer Electra Perivolaris that in turn draws its inspiration from Kirsty Matheson’s artwork.

When Sir James MacMillan speaks, the world takes notice – and at his Ayrshire community music festival, The Cumnock Tryst, he’s helping a generation of composers find their own individual voice. Tonight, he conducts the first Scottish performance of Ghosts, his new concerto for orchestra. Judging from that title (and knowing MacMillan’s passionate belief in the communicative power of music), there’s every reason to expect a lot more than just a colourful workout for a full symphony orchestra. MacMillan introduces it himself and also presents a dazzling, thought-provoking spread of new music from his younger colleagues at The Cumnock Tryst: a vibrant, typically generous celebration of the state of the art in Scottish classical music.

London Sinfonietta returns to Kings Place, presenting an evening of music by Scottish composers exploring the idea of love and our deepest human need for connection.

Judith Weir’s evocative music sets the scene, before the Public World Premiere of a privately commissioned work Love Bade me Welcome by James MacMillan setting poetry about divine love by George Herbert.

The Atenea Quartet makes its Wigmore Hall debut as part of a UK-wide tour. YCAT artist, and recipient of numerous prizes at international competitions, the quartet frequently performs across Europe, including in prestigious festivals, such as the Lucerne Festival, Barcelona String Quartet Biennale and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

Violinist Njioma Grevious brings her "vibrant and compelling" artistry to the Music Room following her previous performances as a founding member of the Abeo Quartet (2023-24 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence).  She is a winner of both the Robert F. Smith First Prize and the Audience Choice Award at the 2023 Sphinx Competition and received a prestigious 2024 Avery Fisher Career Grant. She has an active solo career and has made recent debuts with the Chicago and National Symphony Orchestras.
