Rodgers & Hammerstein’s beloved musical returns to the Alice Busch Opera Theater in a bold new production directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by James Lowe. Set on the cusp of statehood, Oklahoma! celebrates the dreams and complexities of settlers forging new lives on the frontier. This fresh staging evokes both the grandeur of the American landscape and the optimism of the artists who created the work as World War II raged. Oklahoma! is many things: a landmark of musical theater, a grand love story, and an invitation to reflect on the promise of America.

Journey to a secluded upstate town, away from all the hustle and bustle but suspiciously short on cell reception. What will happen when a New York City transplant points out what the kids have been missing? Will the over-protective parents see the error of their ways, or will the grandparents need to step in to save the day? Glimmerglass is proud to present our annual youth opera on the Alice Busch Opera Theater mainstage again this season. This newly commissioned one-hour opera is fun for the whole family; all ages are welcome as we celebrate the talents of some of the youngest performers in our community alongside our Festival artists and world-class production team.

Voltaire’s biting wit, Bernstein’s toe-tapping, heart-warming melodies, and a barrel-load of laughs make for a wild ride across the “best of all possible worlds.” Yet from Montevideo to El Dorado, calamity seems to follow poor Candide and Cunegonde everywhere they go; what’s the use of optimism when the odds seem stacked against you?
