In association with Crow’s Theatre, Tapestry Opera presents a new production of the 2016 world-premiere, award-winning ROCKING HORSE WINNER by Gareth Williams and Anna Chatterton, directed by Michael Hidetoshi Mori with Musical Direction by Kamna Gupta.

Winner of five Dora Mavor Moore Awards, including Outstanding Production and Outstanding Direction, ROCKING HORSE WINNER is a modern adaptation of D. H. Lawrence’s masterful short story. This powerful one-act opera combines magical realism and lyrical minimalism to offer an intimate, psychological look at love, luck, greed, and obsession.

This is the story of Ava and her son Paul. Their house, and an old rocking horse, whisper words that only Paul can hear. When the voice of the house grows more urgent in whispering, “there must be more money,” Paul enlists his lucky rocking horse to tell him the names of live horse race winners. He begins betting with great success, but each win comes at an enormous cost.

Dragon’s Tale dives into the rich and sometimes tense dynamics of first and second-generation immigrants, exploring the fable of Chinese poet Qu Yuan as a foil to the journey of a young Chinese-Canadian woman Xiao Liang and her ailing father. Undeniably, Dragon’s Tale bursts with soaring music, song and storytelling, spanning continents and generations.

Created by the world-renowned team behind Tapestry Opera’s smash-hit Iron Road, composer Chan Ka Nin, one of Canada’s most accomplished Chinese-Canadian composers, and award-winning playwright and librettist Mark Brownell. Directed by Tapestry Opera’s Artistic Director, Michael Hidetoshi Mori, with Musical Direction by David Fallis.
