In association with Crow’s Theatre, Tapestry Opera presents a new production of the 2016 world-premiere, award-winning ROCKING HORSE WINNER by Gareth Williams and Anna Chatterton, directed by Michael Hidetoshi Mori with Musical Direction by Kamna Gupta.

Winner of five Dora Mavor Moore Awards, including Outstanding Production and Outstanding Direction, ROCKING HORSE WINNER is a modern adaptation of D. H. Lawrence’s masterful short story. This powerful one-act opera combines magical realism and lyrical minimalism to offer an intimate, psychological look at love, luck, greed, and obsession.

This is the story of Ava and her son Paul. Their house, and an old rocking horse, whisper words that only Paul can hear. When the voice of the house grows more urgent in whispering, “there must be more money,” Paul enlists his lucky rocking horse to tell him the names of live horse race winners. He begins betting with great success, but each win comes at an enormous cost.

For our ‘Christmas’ concert, we are showcasing the wonderful female vocalist, Zoe Francis, who is making her first visit to the Club. Zoe Francis started singing jazz while living and working in New York, and soon became a regular fixture on the scene, working with many of the finest musicians there, including Harry Allen, Warren Vache and Chris Flory. Zoe has released four albums so far to critical acclaim, all showcasing her beautiful voice as well as her exquisite choice of material. With her love of the Great American Songbook, from the pen of Strayhorn, Mercer, Van Heusen, Allen and others, Zoe’s ability for capturing the bittersweet, poignant nature of these songs brings them to life and elevates her performances to the truly exceptional. Joining Zoe for tonight’s concert will be the iconic Scottish guitarist Jim Mullen, along with a brilliant rhythm section.
