The Hollywood-themed first half begins with Bernard Herrmann’s iconic music for the film Psycho. Conductor Nicholas Hersh makes his Masterworks debut with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, “Reformation,” written to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, when Martin Luther established the Protestant Reformation. It includes the famous Dresden Amen. A noted arranger, Hersh introduces the first performance of his own orchestration of Clara Schumann’s piano collection “4 Pièces caractéristiques.”

Erich Korngold’s hit suite from Much Ado About Nothing offers an early glimpse at his wildly successful partnership with Max Reinhardt, more than a decade before they fled Europe and made Hollywood history. Schoenberg’s Accompaniment to a Cinematographic Scene is—almost certainly intentionally—not so much a film “accompaniment” as it is a full-fledged main attraction. In a world where film and music are inseparably linked, Music@Menlo will focus its lens on the relationship between composers and “the seventh art.” Music has always played a paramount role in the movie theater, supporting the rich emotional connection between the audience and the silver screen, and many composers have been deeply influenced by cinema’s traditions, tropes, and heritage. This Focus Residency will explore the why and how behind several such composers’ works as our camera moves through all the angles: music written for cinema, because of it, mimicking it, and even establishing the cinematic sound. Join us for a fascinating look into the life and works of several composers, featuring Dmitry Shostakovich and his relationship to Soviet cinema; the chamber music of Nino Rota, the man behind The Godfather; Patrick Castillo, a name so dear to Music@Menlo, and his fascination with Ingmar Bergman; the vibrant world of Libby Larsen and her dive into the smoky atmosphere of film noir; and, of course, the “Father of Soundtrack,“ the “Haydn of Film Music“ himself: Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

The March concert will be an expedition between worlds, featuring guest marimbist Ji Su Jung, who will bring to life Kevin Puts’ Marimba Concerto, taking our ears and minds on a trek to somewhere ethereal. The performance opens with Korngold’s Theme and Variations that offers notes of simplicity and shyness. It begins with a swift tempo that evolves into a slow and sweet variation. For Puts’ Marimba Concerto, the WSO will welcome guest artist, Ji Su Jung and her distinctive musical voice known for its depth and lyricism. Jung has studied marimba since the age of three and has since performed numerous concertos with leading orchestras and conductors, earning her the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2022. The evening ends on a diaphanous note with Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (1945) which tells the story of Prince Ivan who defeats the evil Kastchei with the help of the Firebird, who offers Prince Ivan one of her enchanted feathers after he spares her life while hunting in the forest.

From February 16–28, Gianandrea Noseda leads a nine-city European tour, his first international tour with the NSO, and the orchestra’s first since 2016. The NSO will visit some of Europe’s most important concert halls performing for audiences in Spain, Germany, and Italy, joined by pianist Seong-Jin Cho and violinist Hilary Hahn.

Erroll Flynn jumps, fences, shoots with a bow and arrow and speed-talks his way through the classic Warner Bros. film The Adventures of Robin Hood from 1938. He does this opposite Basil Rathbone as Sir Guy of Gisbourne and Olivia de Havilland as Lady Marian. Not an eye is dry. But the real protagonist of the film is Korngold's incomparable music, which also won an Oscar. Poignant, sweeping, eerie and romantic are the tones that play such a significant role in The Adventures of Robin Hood from 1938. It is the music from this film that opens the concert. And who is this unrivaled film composer who has written all the music for tonight's programme? Erich Wolfgang Korngold was a child prodigy. He wrote operas in his teenage years, had a piano sonata premiered by Arthur Schnabel himself when he was 12-13 years old, and Gustav Mahler, Giacomo Puccini and Richard Strauss hailed him as a genius. He fled to the United States under Nazism and promised that he would not compose music for the concert hall as long as Hitler was in power. During that period, he established his name as the film composer above them all. When World War II ended, the first major work he composed was a violin concerto. And in the same way that you can hear that Korngold makes use of his background in the concert hall when he composes film scores, he also makes use of his immortal film themes in this violin concerto. He actually does the same in his symphony from 1952, albeit a little more discreetly. Both the violin concerto and the symphony are romantic and full of emotion, like Korngold's film scores, but there is room for greater reflection, and the slow movements in both works have a poignant mixture of fervor and seriousness in contrast to the bravura of some of the faster movements. Both ends of the spectrum are familiar to our chief conductor Pierre Bleuse, and with him on stage is the young violinist Alexandra Conunova.

The exceptional young instrumentalists of the Kronberg Academy perform with one of the academy’s renowned professors: violist Tabea Zimmermann, recently appointed chair of the Hindemith Foundation. Brahms’s Clarinet Trio, here performed by viola, piano, and cello, is one of the composer’s transcendent final works and a mainstay of the chamber music repertoire. Hindemith was a gifted violist as well as a highly innovative composer, and his fourth string quartet—a work of great contrasts—is arguably his most popular (though still a rare treat in concert). Korngold’s Piano Quintet is a lavish and idiosyncratic early work, composed at the height of his popularity in Germany.

This concert brings to life many moments inspired by dramatic scenes in film such as Pulitzer Prize Winner, Caroline Shaw’s deeply-affecting Entr’acte for string orchestra which is a soulful work inspired by the classical traditions of Haydn. Shaw says, "I love the way some music (like the minuets of Haydn's Op. 77) suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition". For those drawn to mid-century Hollywood film, Bernard Hermann’s (composer extraordinaire) Scene d'Amour from 'Vertigo' is a lush, timeless classic sure to jog some movie memories. The program will conclude with Erich Korngold’s music from The Sea Hawk – a film score that continues to captivate listeners and bring audiences together for a heroic, victorious finale.

Guest conductor Kazem Abdullah balances a busy career conducting operas and symphonic literature, with numerous engagements in both genres around the world. For this program, he leads the orchestra in Erich Korngold’s Symphony in F-sharp. Korngold divided his time between the concert hall and composing film scores, writing the music for 16 Hollywood movies and winning two Oscars in the process. Completed in 1952, Korngold’s only symphony melds his talent for melody with tradition in a profound work of beauty.

Exploring the people, composers, and literature silenced by Nazi Germany, Silenced Voices, features a world premiere commission by Victoria Bond, “Anne Frank’s Tree.” Through a musical meditation on Anne’s Tree as a symbol of hope, Bond connects audiences to the sapling of Anne’s tree that grows at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.  2022 IVCI Silver Medalist, Julian Rhee, performs the stirring Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Additional banned composers Schreker and Korngold will also be featured.
