The focus is on the music for Erich Wolfgang Korngold's fairytale ballet "The Snowman": Colombine and her admirer Pierrot attempt to escape from the clutches of Uncle Pantaloon – and succeed with the help of a snowman. The story is narrated. Finally, things get particularly festive with Otto Nicolai's Christmas Overture, featuring ever-changing variations of the chorale "Vom Himmel hoch."

Erich Wolfgang Korngold was just eleven years old when he composed the ballet The Snowman . The piece's musical brilliance caused such a sensation that even the emperor took notice of the child prodigy's creation and commissioned a performance at the Imperial and Royal Court Opera. This year, excerpts from The Snowman, reminiscent of Tchaikovsky's great ballets, will open the Christmas concert, in which the KSO and the City Theater Chorus will strike a festive, contemplative, and cheerful tone—including Mozart's Ave verum corpus and Leroy Anderson's exhilarating Sleigh Ride .

“More for a Caruso than a Paganini,” Korngold said, is how he wrote his Violin Concerto. This means: a bold embrace of lyrical richness. Renaud Capuçon, with his rich, velvety violin tone, is the ideal interpreter, and Shostakovich’s 11th Symphony provides a stark counterpoint. This symphony is like a history lesson. Its title, “The Year 1905,” refers to Bloody Sunday in St. Petersburg and the massacre of demonstrating workers in front of the Tsar’s palace. The tension, the confrontation between the people and the authorities, the grief for the dead are vividly audible here. Revolutionary songs, workers’ anthems, protest songs—this is the material from which Shostakovich crafts a powerfully evocative symphony—one that resonates just as strongly with its year of composition, 1957, with the Hungarian Uprising that had just been brutally suppressed, as it does with our own time. With this performance, Alain Altinoglu and the hr Symphony Orchestra continue their recording of all Shostakovich symphonies this season. Also physically demanding, energetic, and featuring a powerful percussion section, is "Alaraph," a work by Focus artist Unsuk Chin, being heard for the first time in Germany. The title comes from one of the so-called "heartbeat stars," whose pulsation resembles the heart rate in an electrocardiogram.

With Korngold's lush orchestral sound as cinema for the ears, the epic soundtrack to The Sea Hawk promises pure drama. And Sibelius? He is considered the epitome of the Nordic sound. No composer has shaped Finland musically like he has. His Second Symphony is more than "just" music; it is also a story of protest, of hope, of the Finnish struggle for freedom. It is not for nothing that it bears the nickname "Symphony of Independence." A manifesto in music, powerful, courageous, timeless.

Elgar’s Enigma Variations contain one of the most fascinating mysteries in British classical music. Consisting of a theme and 14 variations—some dark and searching, others playful and assertive—the orchestral work builds upon a wistful theme that was written as a countermelody to an unknown piece that Elgar never shared. A century later, no one has cracked the code to the secret tune. Roberto González-Monjas opens the program with another set of variations, this time by Korngold, overflowing with golden harmonies and a folkish warmth.

Johann Strauss II, the legendary Viennese Waltz King, was born in Vienna 200 years ago in 1825. However, he died a German, namely a citizen of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Out of love for Adele, the Imperial and Royal Court Ball music director renounced his Austrian citizenship and converted from Catholicism to Lutheranism – and this only because the Pope did not annul the Catholic marriage between Strauss and his second wife, Lilli. As an art connoisseur, Duke Ernst II gladly opened the doors to celebrity and was willing to make Strauss "his" citizen. Following naturalization, the Strauss couple were married in the court chapel of Ehrenburg Palace. In gratitude, Strauss dedicated the polka française "Neues Leben" (New Life) to the Duke. The anniversary concert "Straussiana" will feature works by Strauss's contemporaries, admirers, and the master himself. Of course, his non-blood-related namesake, Richard Strauss, who was himself a master of the late Romantic waltz, will also be featured. Star cellist Alexey Stadler will open his residency with "Don Quixote," a tone poem on a theme of chivalric character.

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE), founded in 1981 by former members of the European Community Youth Orchestra, has long been one of the world's leading orchestras. Still organized as a project-based independent ensemble, this ensemble has been a regular guest at the Musikfest since 1994, and this year marks its twelfth appearance. With Robin Ticciati, Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and newly appointed Honorary Member of the COE, the program showcases the richness of music from the first half of the 20th century. All of the composers featured in the program were closely connected to a wide variety of musical movements, thus demonstrating a truly pluralistic approach to style, yet never questioning tonality in their works of great expressive density. And when the South African soprano Golda Schultz sings songs and arias by Gershwin, Weill, Korngold and Bernstein at her music festival debut with her wonderfully warm, extremely expressive and technically flawless voice, then happiness is complete!

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe present arias with a captivating Broadway flair, as if tailor-made for the brilliant and shimmering voice of South African soprano Golda Schultz, whose career is fast on the rise at the world’s major opera houses. Immigrants Stravinsky, Korngold, and Weill meet second-generation Americans Gershwin and Bernstein – their music reveals both personal dislocation and bold innovation. These works are contrasted with Beethoven’s concise and humorous Symphony No. 8 as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe once again demonstrates its top credentials as a Beethoven orchestra.

As in our Freitagskonzert 8, we are travelling to Vienna in the last chamber concert of the season, to a time of decadence, decay and overwrought nerves. But also to a time of awakening, of rewiring these nerves, which were treated by Doctor Freud and his colleagues. Intoxicating chamber music awaits us, centred around the shortest but best-known piece on the programme: the Adagietto from Mahler’s 5th Symphony, immortalised by the Visconti-film Death in Venice. The piano really roars here, taking over the harp part from the original version … Alexander Zemlinsky’s Piano Trio is the oldest piece on the programme and looks back to the past, as it is strongly influenced by Johannes Brahms. Mahler’s symphony was composed around five years later and looks back and forward at the same time – a seemingly timeless work. And Korngold’s Suite from 1930? Written for the left hand of the war-wounded pianist Paul Wittgenstein (like works by Ravel, Prokofieff, Britten and many others), it is no longer the bold work of a child prodigy of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, but a grandiose homage to the splendour of music that has fallen out of time and hangs in no man’s land, between sparseness and opulence, optimism and pessimism, forward and backward-looking …

A new and wonderful combination of orchestra and conductor leaves its calling card: the Wiener Symphoniker, or Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and Petr Popelka. The Czech musician – who, incidentally, was associate principal double bass of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden until 2020 – is considered a shooting star on the conductor’s podium. Together, they offer audience favorites: after beginning with Beethoven, the Viennese orchestra and its chief delve into romantic sound worlds. Following this, the golden age of Hollywood will be revisited through Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto, a piece that incorporates themes from his influential film scores, masterfully performed by Johan Dalene, Gramophone’s 2022 Young Artist of the Year.

The climax of the night will be Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, "Pathétique." This passionate symphony, a work of profound emotion and technical mastery, showcases Tchaikovsky at the pinnacle of his creative power. The audience will be taken on a journey through its blazing brass, lyrical woodwind, and heartfelt strings, culminating in a poignant descent into silence that marks the end of the symphony and our season.

»I love surprises and breaking with conventions, as long as they are subtle.« When it comes to developing dramaturgically sophisticated concert programmes, Jakub Hrůša always proves to be a creative mind and also enjoys experimenting. He is now combining two deeply profound musical creations: Charles Ives’ famous work from 1908 revolves around the question of existence. It ultimately remains unanswered in the room, and the magical piece ends on the exact same note with which Shostakovich»s Symphony No. 11 begins – so that the two compositions merge into one another impressively in our concert. The gripping symphony is subtitled »The Year 1905« and refers to the »St Petersburg Bloody Sunday« — but the work also reflects the just as tragic events of 1957 when it was written. Our Chief Conductor has selected the violin concerto by a composer who originated from his home town of Brno and had to seek refuge in exile in America: Korngold kept his head above water there by writing film music, which left traces in his violin concerto – for which we welcome Bomsori Kim as soloist. An exciting programme full of mesmerising undertow that is thought-provoking but also goes straight to the heart – especially through the conducting of Jakub Hrůša, who said of his favourite recipe: »It is important to find a balance in which you create with emotional charge and at the same time respect the craft. That’s when the best moments happen. And when the audience engages in this kind of valuable interaction, nothing stands in the way of happiness.«
