There are ghosts and devils scattered over tonight's concert with a loose hand. The "Geistertrioen" is arguably among Beethoven's best-known piano trios and certainly not a work you should fool yourself into hearing performed in the concert hall. And what is it that is so ghostly about it? It is its long and strikingly instrumented second movement that creeps somberly under the skin and seems more like background music to a horror film than any other work by Beethoven. Speculation that the music originates from drafts of an opera based on Shakespeare's Macbeth is probably not correct. Rather, the nickname is about the fact that Beethoven's student Carl Czerny noticed that the music made him think of the ghost scene in another work by Shakespeare - namely Hamlet . And the extremely appropriate nickname has stuck since this dramatic and deeply emotional work saw the light of day in 1808.

Aarhus Chamber Music Festival: SOUNDS OF DEATH

Join us for an enchanting evening of chamber music under the stars at the beautiful Caramoor in Katonah, NY, on Friday, July 5, 2024. The Calidore String Quartet, renowned for their exquisite interpretations of chamber music repertory, will be joined by the extraordinary harpist Bridget Kibbey for a performance that promises to be a highlight of the summer season. The concert begins at 7:30 PM in the Spanish Courtyard, a setting that will add an extra layer of magic to the night's repertoire.

This special performance, titled "The Sacred and the Profane," will feature masterworks from the French Belle Époque, showcasing the dramatic and versatile sounds of the harp. The effects of war are profound and far-reaching. Such is the case with Erwin Schulhoff and André Caplet, whose lives changed drastically and were shortened by World Wars I and II. This concert pays tribute to their earlier work paired alongside an early work of Johannes Brahms — his titular Sextet No. 2 written at a time in his life marked by the sudden loss of his mother and a broken engagement to the singer Agathe von Siebold.

Awartime injury forced the talented conductor André Caplet to give up his post as musical director at the Paris Opera. And so the musician, who was born in Le Havre in 1878, soon devoted himself entirely to composition. As a pupil of Claude Debussy, he abandoned his teacher’s Impressionism in favour of the avant-garde, for example in the music he composed for the modern concert harp. In 1919, Caplet wrote a »Fantastic Tale« for harp and string quartet inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s story »The Masque of the Red Death«. The work wonderfully captures both the dark and ghostly atmosphere of the tale while reflecting on the composer’s own experiences of war.
