Conductor Rune Bergmann scales the vast, shimmering expanse of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony (listed as one of the 20 greatest symphonies of all times by BBC Music Magazine), an ode to Richard Wagner that infuses that operatic legend’s breadth and intensity (and even his custom-designed Wagner tubas) into a grand symphonic tapestry. Bringing the effervescent Concerto for Two Pianos that Mozart first played with his sister, the identical twin pianists Christina and Michelle Naughton show off their “extraordinary and satisfying rapport” and their ability “to finish each other’s sentences instinctively.”

Czech conductor Petr Popelka makes his Atlanta Symphony Orchestra debut in an all-Czech program, opening with music by Vítězslava Kaprálová—a Renaissance woman and force of nature who pierced glass ceilings as a composer and conductor in the early 20th-century. Christina and Michelle Naughton join the ASO for Martinů’s Concerto for Two Pianos. To round out the evening, Popelka leads the Orchestra in the haunting and exuberant Symphony No. 8 by Antonín Dvořák.

Whatever the Naughton twins play, the results are always impeccable and their personalities delightful as well. They are bringing a two piano rarity to us by Max Bruch. Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 will leave you dancing in the aisles and Tchaikovsky’s final symphony has always been a personal favorite of mine.
