The harp takes centre stage in this free early-evening performance by members of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

In the early years of the 20th century, the Paris instrument-makers Pleyel had commissioned Debussy to write a piece to show off the capabilities of a new model of harp. Their rival company, Erard, fought back by commissioning from Ravel this mini-concerto for harp, strings and woodwind, that would make the most of the technical and expressive potential of their instruments. The result is certainly some of the most attractive advertising music ever written.

This special performance features the talented Edmonton-native violinist, Juliette Kang, who returns to captivate the audience with her rendition of Marjan Mozetich’s breathtaking violin concerto, "Affairs of the Heart," alongside Ravel’s impressive "Tzigane." The concert will also celebrate Saint Cecilia’s Day with Handel's joyful "Concerto grosso" from his musical ode, "Alexander's Feast," and will showcase Haydn’s "Symphony No. 31 Horn Signal," known for its prominent and unusual use of the horn section.

UTNMF: University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra

We begin with El Dorado, a work for harp and strings. The work describes a journey/quest for the elusive city completely made of gold. The greedy marching conquistadors, beautiful tropical landscapes, hidden dangers with moments of peacefulness and contemplation.

​The program continues with two iconic works by Czech composers, Smetana and Dvorak. Smetana writes, "​I had no intention of composing a quartet according to a formula or according to the usual conception of the form...
Consequently this Quartet created its own form. I wanted to picture the tones in the course of my life."

Dvorak's Dumky Trio describes the style of  a Slavic (some sources state specifically Ukrainian) folk song marked by abrupt changes from soulful to exuberant.

LSO’s chamber orchestra returns to the magnificent Saint Paul United Methodist Church. After opening with Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galánta, LSO is joined by principal harpist Katie Wychulis and harpist Julie Smith to perform Marjan Mozetich’s double harp concerto, The Passion of Angels. The program closes with Franz Joseph Haydn’s stately London Symphony.
