For its first concert of 2026, Cascade Symphony performs Beethoven’s iconic Fifth Symphony along with music by Richard Wagner, Leos Janacek and Edouard Lalo. Cellist Sunnat Ibragimov, an Uzbekistan native and current Seattle Symphony member, previously served as Principal Cellist of the prestigious Tanglewood Festival Orchestra. He has performed with major orchestras in Asia and North America and is pursuing doctoral studies at the renowned Peabody Institute. He joins Cascade Symphony to perform Edouard Lalo’s lyrically romantic cello concerto.

Drama meets Romance: When the Norwegian national poet Henrik Ibsen and his compatriot, the Norwegian Edward Grieg, met in Rome in 1866, they immediately hit it off. It's no wonder that Ibsen later asked the composer to write the music for his play "Peer Gynt" - at that time, it was almost unthinkable to stage a major theater production without incidental music. But as good as the music was - it would have long been forgotten if Grieg had not compiled it into two suites for orchestra. Today, the work, with the flute melody from "Morning Mood" or the striking sounds of the bassoon in "In the Hall of the Mountain King," is considered quintessential romantic music. As a grand finale to the Dresden City Festival, the Dresden Philharmonic will present it open-air on Theaterplatz under the direction of Tabita Berglund - who could be more suitable for this than the newly appointed First Guest Conductor from Norway?

Hungarian composer Béla Bartók explores folk melodies of his home country in the personal orchestral composition Hungarian Pictures. The Santa Maria Philharmonic welcomes guest violin soloist Jessica Guideri to help close the concert and season with a performance of Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, the late 19th Century French composer’s musical depiction of Spain.

Ring in spring with the HSO! This blissful concert features HSO Concertmaster Leonid Sigal, the Hartford Chorale, and guest conductor Jacomo Bairos and celebrates beauty, hope, and growth. William Grant Still’s moving piece Spirituals: A Medley brings you a sense of renewal that carries throughout the program. Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole was an inspiration for Tchaikovsky to compose his famous violin concerto, and he enthusiastically described the piece as having “a lot of freshness, lightness of piquant rhythms, of beauty and excellently harmonized melodies”.  Vivaldi’s Gloria is one of sacred music’s most uplifting choral works and its radiance and poignant sound will ring throughout the concert hall.

TSO’s own concertmaster, Rossitza Goza, is the featured soloist for this fantastical evening. Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole is a virtuosic and colorful composition for violin and orchestra. It was composed in 1874 and stands as one of the most popular and frequently performed violin concertos in the Romantic repertoire. Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique is a groundbreaking and influential composition that premiered in 1830 and remains one of his most renowned works.

Our second concert of the indoor Masterworks season features Fantaisie Norvegienne by Eduardo Lalo played by Ukrainian guest violinist Vladyslava Luchenko. This gem of a work is nestled in between John Marsh’s Symphony No. 6 in D and Schubert’s Symphony No.5. A contemporary of Haydn, John Marsh wrote in a classical gallant style. While Schubert’s Symphony No.5 looks forward to the romantic era, Lalo’s language is Romanticism at its best. Beginning violin at the age of five, Luchenko made her solo debut with the Kiev Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of eleven. Today she performs on a Francesco Gobetti violin of 1710, on loan from a private collection.

Music Director candidate Robert Moody, currently Music Director of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, leads this romping season-opening concert. Arturo Márquez’s Danzón is a vibrant and rhythmic orchestral piece that embodies the essence of Mexican dance and culture. With its infectious melodies and lively rhythms, it invites listeners to sway and embrace the joyous spirit of danzón. In contrast, Édouard Lalo’s Cello Concerto in D minor is a masterpiece of the Romantic era, characterized by its lyrical and passionate melodies performed here by Concert Artist Guild and Sphinx Competition first-prize winner Gabriel Martins. Finally, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is a testament to the composer’s genius, known for its relentless energy and rhythmic drive. Its second movement, the Allegretto, is particularly famous for its haunting beauty and emotional depth, making it one of Beethoven’s most iconic compositions.

Josep Pons and the BBC Symphony Orchestra present a Spanish-themed Prom with a French accent. Debussy and Ravel paint Spain in their own distinctive colours: Ravel with the raw heat and insistent thrum of his Boléro and Debussy in the vivid musical vignettes of Ibéria. Meanwhile Spanish violinist María Dueñas – a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist and winner of the 2021 Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition – is the soloist in Édouard Lalo’s most famous work, the Symphonie espagnole, which marks the French Romantic composer’s 200th anniversary. The concert opens in Andalusia, with music from Falla’s tragic opera La vida breve, set in sun-soaked Granada.

Balanchine’s La Source, set to the music of Léo Delibes, has been hailed as the choreographer’s tribute to the charm and sophistication of French dancing. Originally composed as a pas de deux, it was later expanded with the addition of an ensemble. Alexei Ratmansky turned to the lesser-known Édouard Lalo for inspiration for his Namouna, A Grand Divertissement, a ballet that likewise draws on classical French steps and style as it depicts a romantic tale of thwarted love eventually rewarded, combining pure dance, hints of drama, and lively moments of wit.
