Towards the end of the 19th century, Spanish motifs became popular in music - the most famous result is perhaps Bizet's Carmen . With his Spanish accent, Édouard Lalo also had a special feeling for Spain. We hear this in his exuberant and virtuoso violin concerto. Here, dramatic parts meet rhythmic flamenco motifs. Everything is mixed into an exuberant southern fiesta. The highly sought-after violinist Clara-Jumi Kang performs the concerto on a Stradivarius from 1702.

Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel’s Overture, a bold and joyful work, hints at the greatness she might have achieved had she been allowed to follow in her beloved brother Felix’s footsteps. This September, ERSO welcomes back conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier, whose program of French music received wide acclaim in March 2025. Once again, Tortelier will explore the rich world of 19th-century French composers, beginning with the overture to Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz, a pioneer of modern orchestration. Marcel Johannes Kits will perform a rare gem of the cello repertoire: the concerto by Édouard Lalo. The evening will conclude with one of the best-known works by the short-lived composer Ernest Chausson—his Symphony in B-flat major.

Drama meets Romance: When the Norwegian national poet Henrik Ibsen and his compatriot, the Norwegian Edward Grieg, met in Rome in 1866, they immediately hit it off. It's no wonder that Ibsen later asked the composer to write the music for his play "Peer Gynt" - at that time, it was almost unthinkable to stage a major theater production without incidental music. But as good as the music was - it would have long been forgotten if Grieg had not compiled it into two suites for orchestra. Today, the work, with the flute melody from "Morning Mood" or the striking sounds of the bassoon in "In the Hall of the Mountain King," is considered quintessential romantic music. As a grand finale to the Dresden City Festival, the Dresden Philharmonic will present it open-air on Theaterplatz under the direction of Tabita Berglund - who could be more suitable for this than the newly appointed First Guest Conductor from Norway?

Our second concert of the indoor Masterworks season features Fantaisie Norvegienne by Eduardo Lalo played by Ukrainian guest violinist Vladyslava Luchenko. This gem of a work is nestled in between John Marsh’s Symphony No. 6 in D and Schubert’s Symphony No.5. A contemporary of Haydn, John Marsh wrote in a classical gallant style. While Schubert’s Symphony No.5 looks forward to the romantic era, Lalo’s language is Romanticism at its best. Beginning violin at the age of five, Luchenko made her solo debut with the Kiev Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of eleven. Today she performs on a Francesco Gobetti violin of 1710, on loan from a private collection.

Arturo Márquez’s Danzón is a vibrant and rhythmic orchestral piece that embodies the essence of Mexican dance and culture. In contrast, Édouard Lalo’s Cello Concerto in D minor is a masterpiece of the Romantic era, characterized by its lyrical and passionate melodies performed here by Concert Artist Guild and Sphinx Competition first-prize winner Gabriel Martins. Finally, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is a testament to the composer’s genius, known for its relentless energy and rhythmic drive. Please pardon our Maestro for invoking a little of his own agenda for this concert, which he has filled with some of his favourite music. Strauss’s Vienna Bonbons is sublime, Lalo’s Cello Concerto, particularly as performed by Rachel Mercer, is a musical treasure trove, and Dvorak’s Eighth Symphony is a melodic smorgasbord from the very first note. Yes, this is an indulgence for our Music Director, but these magnificent pieces of music might become some of your favourites too!

Dances set to music from 19th-century France comprise this program. Balanchine’s La Source, set to the music of Léo Delibes, has been hailed as the choreographer’s tribute to the charm and sophistication of French dancing. Originally composed as a pas de deux, it was later expanded with the addition of an ensemble. Alexei Ratmansky turned to the lesser-known Édouard Lalo for inspiration for his Namouna, A Grand Divertissement, a ballet that likewise draws on classical French steps and style as it depicts a romantic tale of thwarted love eventually rewarded, combining pure dance, hints of drama, and lively moments of wit.
