As the MSO celebrates 100 years this season, it seemed only fitting to bring some of my MSO colleagues with me on stage to showcase their talent and our unique pairing. While the organ can be quite a loud instrument, it can also be used in a softer and more subtle way. With works like Handel’s G minor Organ Concerto and movements from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Coleridge-Taylor’s Nonet, this program will demonstrate the versatility and more intimate side of our instrument. I’m also excited that the audience will get a chance to hear many of the musicians they hear in the orchestra perform some works as soloists with the organ. With this program, the orchestra wants to give its audience a real Christmas present. In the program, we have tried to collect the most beautiful Christmas melodies and the most famous Christmas songs. Everything from Sibelius' Christmas Carol, Koppången and Klang min vackra bjällra , to Sleigh Ride and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, which are also included in the program. To help us, we have Norrköping-born Olle Persson as soloist and the choirs Bel Canto and Musikaliska Sällskapets Kammarkör. It almost couldn't get better. Here you really get the chance to fill up on all the energy and Christmas spirit needed for the holidays.

Given the enormous success of SSO’s Nutcracker performance in December 2023, Tchaikovsky’s first symphony, called Winter Daydreams, will be the highlight of the winter season. Surely everyone of us has skated several laps of our local ice rinks to Waldteufel’s Skater’s Waltz with smiles on our faces and joy in our hearts. The SSO is pleased to present these and another seasonal favourite, The Sound of Music, at this most wonderful time of the year.

From the timeless melodies of Europe to the rhythmic beats of Latin America and beyond, this concert bridges cultures and traditions, uniting hearts in the warmth and goodwill of the season.

Themed “Music From Film” the orchestra will be performing music composed for and featured on the silver screen at our Summer Concert. The concert will take place at Bramshaw Village Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday 15 June 2024. Conducted by Simon Wilkins, the orchestra will be playing a selection of music featured in and composed for film, including 2001 Space Odyssey, The Mission, Fantasia, The King’s Speech, Jean de Florette, Apocalpyse Now, Lord of the Rings, Rocketman, Apollo 13 and more!

The ETSO season concludes with the World Premiere of a piece commissioned by the orchestra. Written by Dr. Kyle Gullings, Associate Professor of Music Theory and Composition at UT Tyler, “Gridiron Symphony” celebrates the traditions surrounding the East Texas passion for high school football. The concert also features other sports-themed works, including Olympic-inspired pieces by John Williams, Vangelis’s popular theme from “Chariots of Fire,” and Charles Ives’s take on the Yale-Princeton football rivalry. The entire family will enjoy this uplifting end to the 2023/2024 season.
