The biggest night in classical music is back! After eight weeks and over 80 concerts, the 2025 BBC Proms celebrates with a Last Night spectacular, packed with musical surprises and star turns. Elim Chan conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in all the traditional favourites – anthems, folk songs and singalongs – with solo performances by ‘captivating’ soprano Louise Alder and ‘sensational’ trumpeter Alison Balsom. There’s a nod to this season’s Bernard Herrmann celebration, a mischevous sorcerer’s apprentice from Dukas, and premieres by Camille Pépin and Rachel Portman.

The Snowman

Most music lovers are familiar with the “Great B’s,” Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, but this is not the only alliterative group of brilliant composers. In our December concert, we invite listeners to celebrate the “Great P’s.” Highlights include three selections from operas by the master of drama, Giacomo Puccini, and a violin concerto by the master of orchestration, Sergei Prokofiev, featuring rising-star violin soloist Beau Henson. The concert opens with music by film score composer Rachel Portman, and includes the moving Agnus Dei from the Polish Requiem by the brilliant composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

This fall, Resonance Works presents the Pittsburgh premiere of Rachel Portman's modern masterpiece, The Little Prince, based on the beloved book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. This new production created by acclaimed stage director Keturah Stickann in collaboration with conductor and Artistic & General Director Maria Sensi Sellner features 12-year-old America's Got Talent phenom Victory Brinker in the title role and internationally-lauded baritone Daniel Teadt as The Pilot, alongside the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus and Resonance Chamber Orchestra.

A young prince travels the universe and, determined to be reunited with his beloved Rose, explores his new surroundings looking for a way back to his tiny asteroid home planet. During his journey, he meets a number of colorful, and often puzzling, characters—each, in turn, sharing their mite of wisdom and helping (and sometimes hindering) the Little Prince’s attempt to return to Asteroid B-612.

Cynthia Lee Wong‘s Carnival Fever is inspired by the Alexandre Dumas novel, The Count of Monte Cristo. The chapter “Carnival at Rome” paints exuberant atmosphere, bright colors and fun, held in tension with a sense of things going wildly out of control, an undercurrent of danger and revenge.  Alexandre Desplat won the 2018 Academy Award for his score written for the film The Shape of Water. The score gives voice to the film’s two mute characters, a cleaning woman and an amphibious creature (the latter voiced by an accordion playing in South American bandoneon style, suggesting the creature’s geographical home).  Bay Area based composer Mason Bates once again combines orchestra and electronica in his composition, The B-Sides. He writes, “[Like] the forgotten bands from the flipside of an old piece of vinyl, The B-Sides offers brief landings on a variety of peculiar planets, unified by a focus on fluorescent orchestral sonorities and the morphing rhythms of electronica.”  Rachel Portman composed the score for Cider House Rules, a 1999 Academy Award winner.  Aaron Copland mastered an assortment of musical idioms over his long career, ranging from avant-garde to popular formats. El Salon Mexico was his first work in his most popular style, representing “an uncomplicated form of American nationalism.”

But perhaps it's the other way around: Perhaps his music sounds so alien today because we've become accustomed to everything having a filter—even the horrific. For while Khachaturian, through direct witnessing, poured war into music, autocracies are regaining strength, eroding democracy.
