Fascinating histories merge in a program of eclectic rarities, a world premiere, and a heroic classic. Musical gadfly Frank Zappa took one of the themes from his band Mothers of Invention and created the electrifying symphonic work Dog Breath Variations. Joseph Boulogne, a French Chevalier of African descent, was the music instructor of Marie Antoinette, a champion fencer, and composer of the delightfully animated Symphony No. 2. Composer-in-residence John Wineglass returns with another anticipated premiere: a new concerto called Democracy for versatile clarinetist Mariam Adam. The concert concludes with Beethoven's iconic portrait of Napoleon: the gripping and revolutionary Symphony No. 3, "Eroica."

This concert brings together three remarkable voices of the Classical era in music that moves from charm and drama to joy and hope. Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges sets the stage with the lively and elegant overture to L’amant anonyme, full of sparkle and theatrical flair. Approaching a genius: With his "Journey to Mozart," Daniel Hope embarked on his first musical adventure into the Mozart cosmos in 2018. A world of sound that is always worth exploring and bringing to life anew. "His music has something otherworldly, untouchable, almost unattainable. And yet he was so human," says Hope. In his new version of "Journey to Mozart," the violinist approaches the Salzburg master by once again allowing his contemporaries to have their say: In addition to famous colleagues such as Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Glück, this time the program also includes a violin concerto by arguably the most extraordinary musician of Mozart's time: Joseph Bologne, the son of a French nobleman and a slave from Guadeloupe, made a career during the French Revolution both as a violin virtuoso and composer, as well as an accomplished fencer in the Légion des Américains et du Midi.

The four movements of Symphony No. 39 are marked by Mozart’s brilliant orchestration, melody, and structure. This concert also features Mozart’s lively, lyrical Bassoon Concerto – a piece that highlights the bassoon’s unique sound and technical capabilities, showcasing the tremendous skill and virtuosity of our own Principal Bassoon Gabe Azzie – and the bright, jovial Symphony No. 2 by Mozart’s contemporary Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

We can only imagine how much courage, self-confidence and steadfastness the African-American Julia Perry had to muster on her way to becoming a composer, at a time when the doors of classical music were not open to women or people of color. And yet she pursued her goal unswervingly, studying first with Luigi Dallapiccola and later with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Her career began in 1951 with the "Stabat Mater", but it was never given the attention it deserved. A fate that Florence Price had already suffered at the end of the 19th century. She was also a woman and an African-American - and, against all odds, managed to compose an impressive number of around 300 compositions. And a century earlier, Joseph Bologne also had to struggle with racism and discrimination, for he was born in Guadeloupe to a slave and a French nobleman and was later admired at the court of Paris as the "black Mozart". With Brandon Keith Brown, the conductor is vehemently committed to ensuring that people of color, both past and present, are finally given the attention they deserve. As part of the "New Ways" project "Music-Axis-Times", the concert aims to help finally establish this repertoire that has been suppressed for too long and to give people of color a visible place on the stage.

As if embarking on a musical journey through time, we can trace how personal expression and individual voices emerge with increasing clarity from the early Haydn to the late Beethoven. The overture to the opera L'amant anonyme by the dazzling Mozart contemporary Joseph Bologne opens the program and sets the stage for cellist Julia Hagen's performance of Joseph Haydn's  Concerto in C major – a work that, with its brilliant tone and alternations of solos and orchestral ritornellos, initially exudes a strong late Baroque spirit, ultimately culminating in virtuosic boldness in the finale.
