Jealousy and hatred lead to a cruel and sudden death in the tragic opera Pajazzo  by Ruggiero Leoncavallo. The story is about a traveling theater company. Its leader Canio is constantly jealous of his wife Nedda. Many will surely recognize Canio's great aria Vesti la gioubba (Laugh Pajazzo). When it is time to perform the company's performance, Canio breaks down, this time in the guise of Pajazzo. In blind rage, he gives Nedda the option of giving him the name of her lover or death. Nedda refuses, and Canio stabs her and her lover who tries to save her. He is immediately arrested and shouts the famous words to the audience: La commedia è finita! (The comedy is over).

Pagliacci, an opera in two acts with a prologue, by Ruggero Leoncavallo, follows in the fortunate wake of Cavalleria rusticana, which had paved the way for the strand of verismo theatre. The libretto, prepared by the composer himself, is based on a crime story, a crime of passion that really happened in Montalto Uffugo, the village in Calabria where the composer lived as a young man. Performed at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan on 21 May 1892, under the baton of Toscanini, the opera achieved international fame in a very short time. The popular setting, where violent feelings are rendered by a convulsive vocalism, is the backdrop to the drama of jealousy of Canio, the head of an itinerant company. Thanks to the subtle narrative device of the theatre within the theatre, of real life consumed in the comedy performed on stage, Leoncavallo enhances the dramatic charge of the subject. The demon of jealousy that devours the protagonist, an unhappy man in reality and in fiction, cannot but lead him to the final catastrophe, with the heinous murder of his adulterous wife Nedda and her unfortunate lover.

Great Voices is a concert series initiated in the 2025/26 season by Boris Kudlička , the new director of the Grand Theatre - National Opera. It will feature an elite group of Polish opera singers of international renown, who have had the opportunity to invite international artists to collaborate with them. “The artist is a man, and he must write for men. … and you will see true hatred and its bitter fruit.” In the Pagliacci prologue, Tonio tells us what this opera is about – it seeks to put the reality of life on the stage. This applies for both works, which will now enjoy their first new staging at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 46 years (1978). Together Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo simply exemplify verismo. The basic situation: A woman is unfaithful. Another reveals this to the husband, and he, spurred on by this woman, takes bloody revenge on the lover. Cavalleria rusticana is about Turiddu, who returns to find his old flame Lola again, but she is now married to the carter, Alfio. Turiddu then consoles himself by seducing Santuzza. But the old love is reignited, and Lola betrays her husband, and Turiddu his girlfriend. In Pagliacci, the plot revolves around Nedda and her husband Canio, the leader of a group of comedians. Nedda’s love for him has grown cold, so she turns to the farmer, Silvio.

The classic tale of lust, jealousy, and murder inside a troupe of comedians, featuring the iconic tenor  aria “Vesti la giubba”.  New production by Octavio Cardenas and Daniel Chapman set in 1930’s Italy,  inspired by Italian neorealist cinema.  Starring Robert Stahley and Alaysha Fox.

Pagliacci (Clowns) offers a tale of art imitating life, and vice-versa, for a troupe of traveling players. Nedda, her husband Canio, and their fellow actors Beppe and Tonio, arrive at a new town, and they explain the show that they will be performing that night: “the troubles of Pagliacco.” The troupe then joins villagers for a drink before the performance, at which Canio reveals that while he plays the clown on stage, in real life he is quickly enraged about the attention his wife receives from other men. Nedda is frightened by Canio’s dark revelation, but later agrees tentatively to elope with Silvio, who is her secret lover. Canio learns of Nedda’s deception, and later that evening, while in character on stage, he acts out his shame, and rage, demanding to know the name of his wife’s love.  Their play ends in violence, both onstage and off, with Canio declaring “La commedia è finita!!” – “The comedy is finished!”

Gianni Schicchi is the scheming title character who plots to gain revenge, riches, and happiness through one extraordinary con. The story begins when the rich Donati family learns that their recently deceased patriarch, Buoso Donati, has left all his wealth to a monastery, much to their dismay. Rinuccio, his nephew, had hoped that his inheritance would enable him to marry his sweetheart, Lauretta, even though she and her father, Gianni Schicchi, are newcomers to Florence and not accepted by the elitist Donati family.

Although initially shunned by the snobby old family, Gianni Schicchi gives in to Rinuccio’s pleas to help the Donati family, and agrees to meddle with the will by impersonating Buoso.  And then the hijinks begin!

"Il segreto di Susanna" is a sophisticated comedy that explores the misunderstandings and secrets between a newlywed couple, with a plot that anticipates the screwball comedies of the 1930s. Its counterpart, "Pagliacci," presents a darker narrative of love, betrayal, and revenge within a troupe of traveling performers, culminating in a dramatic and bloody conclusion. This juxtaposition of Wolf-Ferrari’s elegant comedy against Leoncavallo’s harrowing tragedy offers a unique theatrical experience that showcases the diverse emotional landscapes of opera.

The productions boast a talented cast including Clare Presland, Richard Burkhard, and John Savournin, who reunite for John Wilkie’s stylish revival of "Il segreto di Susanna." David Butt Philip, celebrated as the leading tenor of his generation, makes his role debut as Canio in "Pagliacci," under the direction of Martin Lloyd-Evans and conducted by Francesco Cilluffo. The performances also feature Alison Langer as Nedda and Harry Thatcher as Silvio, promising exceptional vocal and dramatic presentations.

Performances are scheduled from July 17th to August 3rd, 2024, with evening shows at 7.30pm. Pagliacci tells the story of an acting troupe: the aging actor Canio learns that his younger wife Nedda is having an affair with another man. Nevertheless, he has to put on a good face every evening on stage as “Bajazzo”. Canio threatens to break because of it.

The ability of the composer Ruggero Leoncavallo to reconcile the playful theater-on-the-theater level, the ambiguous emotional situation and the dark mood makes this opera a thrilling crime thriller.

In Giacomo Puccini's first opera Le Villi, the composer's talent as a melodist and harmonizer - his typical "melancholic tone" - can be clearly heard. Anna and Roberto celebrate their engagement. Soon afterwards, Roberto has to travel to Mainz to collect an inheritance, where he falls for a seductive stranger. Anna feels betrayed by him and dies of grief. Her soul unites with the Willis, the souls of dead women who suffered a similar fate. Roberto finally returns full of remorse, but he is drawn into a frenzied dance by the Willis...

A traveling troupe of commedia dell’arte brings with them not only a play that is frighteningly true to life, but also a host of secrets and jealousies. In Pagliacci—Clowns—composer Ruggero Leoncavallo created not the usual love triangle, but a love quadrangle, with three men—Canio, Tonio, and Silvio—all fighting for the love and attention of one woman, Nedda. Using the classic ‘play within a play’ format, the real lives of the characters act as a mirror to their parts in the play, with tragic consequences. As the on-stage drama melds with real-life passions, the two stories explode in a finale of manipulation, jealousy, violence, and of course, death. This is commedia after all.

In Pagliacci, composer Ruggero Leoncavallo created not the usual love triangle, but a love quadrangle, with three men all fighting for the love and attention of one woman. Using the classic ‘play within a play’ format, the characters’ real lives act as a mirror to their parts in the play, with tragic consequences. As the on-stage drama melds with real-life passions, the two stories explode in a finale of manipulation, jealousy, violence, and of course, death. This is commedia after all.

Pagliacci tells the story of an acting troupe: the aging actor Canio learns that his younger wife Nedda is having an affair with another man. Nevertheless, every evening he has to put on a good face on the stage as "Bajazzo" and play the game. Canio threatens to break up.

In Giacomo Puccini's first opera Le Villi, the composer's talent as a melodist and harmonist - his typical "melancholic tone" - is clearly heard. Anna and Roberto celebrate their engagement. Soon after, Roberto has to travel to Mainz for an inheritance, where he falls for a seductive stranger. Anna feels betrayed by him and dies of grief. Her soul reunites with the Willis, the souls of dead women who have suffered a similar fate. Roberto eventually returns, full of regrets, but the Willis engage him in a frenzied dance...

Performed for the first time at Teatro Dal Verme in Milan on 21 May 1892, Pagliacci is a manifesto of the Giovane Scuola. However, the grim story narrated by Leoncavallo develops through a musical dramaturgy with characters that were remarkably innovative for that period, so much so that they can be considered an anticipation of aspects that will be found in a reworked form in early twentieth century theatre. The fall of the so-called ‘fourth wall’ – with the appearance outside the curtain of the Prologue, which disqualifies the theatrical conception of the author –, the tragic reality that bursts onto the scene of the comedy, when Canio’s jealousy results in the double murder of Nedda and her lover, are all precursors of Pirandello’s ‘metateatro’ or theatre within theatre. In the same way, the crime of passion, physical deformity as a sign of inner perversion, and the squalid life of comedians are all themes that are present in this single act, all of which will be found in various authors of early twentieth century Expressionism: from Berg to Hindemith, and the pair Brecht and Weill. As for the Commedia dell ‘Arte stock characters evoked by Leoncavallo’s tale, they in particular will go on to be a source of inspiration for composers such as Malipiero, Strauss, Busoni, and Casella. All of this shows that, his immediate melodic appeal aside (a mention of ‘Vesti la giubba’ suffices, which is so popular with the general public), the masterpiece of the Neapolitan composer deserves a more careful evaluation.

Always an audience favorite for its dramatic, passionate music and colorful scenes, “Pagliacci” (The Clown) is a Verismo style opera, featuring realistic characters thrust into everyday life crises. Italian composer Ruggero Leoncavallo wrote both the wrods and the music in 1892, and not only is the opera based on a true story, but it is perhaps Opera’s original “Reality Show.”

The story follows a raucous band of traveling clowns, jugglers, and actors who arrive in a small italian town to perform their boisterous comedy act. Amid the circus-like atmosphere, tensions arise behind the scenes between the actor playing Pagliaccio, the lead clown, and his young wife. Pagliaccio suspects his wife is having an affair. As his personal conflict is mirrored in the drama they are portraying on stage, the boundaries between performance and reality begin to blur. Consumed with jealousy, suspicion, and rage, Pagliaccio is unable to separate his own life from the fictional play they are enacting. A real-life tragedy unfolds on stage while the audience of villagers mistakes the emotionally-charged drama as expert acting.

Pietro Mascagni's opera Cavalleria rusticana and Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci are two works now almost inextricably linked; composed in 1890 and 1892 respectively, they both evoke the sounds, scents, and atmosphere of southern Italy, but in their brutality and harshness, they also reflect the naturalistic approach of Verismo at the end of the 19th century.

Men and women of flesh and blood take centre stage in Cavalleria rusticana as in Pagliacci. Reality becomes theatre and, when the masks come off, theatre becomes reality. In both of these short works, obsessive love and jealousy give rise to violent emotions and passionate musical outbursts. When they brought rural Italy to the opera stage, Pietro Mascagni and Ruggero Leoncavallo inaugurated verismo in music. Director Damiano Michieletto is reprising his 2018 production, which made a lasting impression with its powerful neo-realist transposition to an Italian village in the mid-twentieth century. For her debut at La Monnaie, conductor Alevtina Ioffe promises to bring out the emotional depth of these scores with their unparalleled dramatic force.

When, in 1888, the music publisher Edoardo Sonzogno announced a competition for young Italian composers, who were invited to submit a one-act opera, he had not the slightest inkling that the victorious piece would become a timeless blockbuster. The 25-year-old Pietro Mascagni sent Cavalleria rusticana, which he had just completed. The premiere, in 1890 in Rome, was a true sensation, and the verismo opera, depicting ordinary contemporary people, villagers and low social classes, would remain Mascagni’s greatest success. Ruggero Leoncavallo decided to follow suit and duly composed his very first opera, Pagliacci, in the verismo style. Premiered in 1892 in Milan, the piece met with an enthusiastic response. In 1893, the two operas were first staged as a double bill, and ever since they have been frequently performed together.
