Pianist

Violinist Njioma Grevious and pianist Zhihua Tang bring a captivating program featuring Messiaen’s ethereal Theme and Variations alongside Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 2, a work brimming with lyricism and fiery virtuosity. Grevious, a graduate of The Juilliard School and winner of the 2024 Avery Fisher Career Grant, is a dynamic soloist and chamber musician celebrated for her expressive artistry. Tang, an esteemed collaborative pianist and associate professor at Michigan State University, is known for her exceptional musical depth.

Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is “one of the most thrilling and influential compositions in chamber music,” describes DSO Assistant Concertmaster Hai-Xin Wu. Written and premiered in a prison-of-war camp during the early days of the Second World War, the French composer, inspired by his belief, found resources in such a dark place to create a brilliant and enduring masterpiece.

The DSO concludes its chamber recital season at Steinway Gallery with two piano trios from the Romantic era. Clara Schumann's Piano Trio in G minor is a deeply expressive work that showcases Schumann's skill as a pianist and composer. Paired with Brahms's Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, both pieces display a lively and intricate interplay between piano and strings.
