A little Italian boy is brought to France, enchants the king and has a stronger and more lasting influence on French musical life than any other: Jean-Baptiste Lully 's miraculous rise from an underage serf to "Conseiller secrétaire du roi" is not due to his musical talent. It is his dance numbers and parodies that enchant the future Sun King. He composes his own ballets and remains the Sun King's undisputed favorite composer for 25 years. He is the founder of the French national opera and writes the music for more than 50 stage works, as well as songs, motets and dances. His death is as dramatic as his life: during a rehearsal, the 55-year-old composer rams the heavy conductor's baton into his foot. The wound becomes infected and Lully, the dancer, dies because he refuses to have his foot amputated.

One hundred seventy-six years before the scandalous premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, composer Jean-Féry Rebel was indeed rebelling against the baroque style with his cacophony of dense chords that turned chaos into the creation of the world around us. Dutch baroque specialist and exponent of historical performance practice Ton Koopman is back with us - not as a harpsichordist, but as conductor of the Konzerthausorchester. After Bach's festive overture in D major, whose movements include the famous „Air“, and one of Mozart's early piano concertos, things get wild: In the opening movement of his last work, Jean-Féry Rebel (1666-1747), violinist and composer at the French court, captured the primordial chaos in tones that were unheard of at the time, before order gradually unfolds musically in the course of the other movements (not performed here) in the vast expanse of the universe. Instead, at the end of the concert you can enjoy the harmony of Mozart's early G minor Symphony, one of two of his symphonies that are not in a major key.
