This program spans three eras of classical music: the Romantic, the avant-garde, and the contemporary. Anthony Manzo, solo bassist of San Francisco’s New Century Chamber Orchestra, makes his Festival debut in Dvořák’s sonorous and sunny String Quintet in G Major, and violinist Yura Lee and pianist Zoltán Fejérvári present a riveting dialogue of rhythmic complexity in Bartók’s vibrant Sonata No. 1. Dutilleux’s Les Citations weaves a rich tapestry of sound with its unusual instrumentation of harpsichord, oboe, bass, and percussion.

No series featuring the music of Bach would be complete without his music for voice. Collaborating with the Savannah VOICE Festival to present Mark Delavan (who played Gianni Schicchi in the collaborative Puccini production at SMF 2015), the Bach Cantata in the first half is contrasted by a second half of songs by Copland and Weill. How interesting would it have been for Bach to have sat in the audience to hear the songs by Copland and Kurt Weill and to see his response?

Some 200 years after Bach’s death, 20th Century composers were still heavily inspired by the Baroque Era and the compositional techniques used (fugue, counterpoint, etc.), Stravinsky being one such composer. The fact that this will unquestionably still be the case in 2050, makes Bach’s music an eternal inspiration.

This concert features two composers that were most definitely not influenced by JS Bach, and in the case of Tchaikovsky, Bach’s music was very much “back and beyond.” Although he acknowledged his technical skills, he in no way regarded Bach as a musical legend.

Four longtime friends of the Festival—violinists Benny Kim, Daniel Phillips, Ida Kavafian, and Jennifer Gilbert—solo in one of the most beloved and well-known works of the classical music repertoire: Vivaldi’s sparkling, infectious, and brilliantly evocative The Four Seasons.

Two lush, 19th-century sextets—one for strings by Brahms and one for piano and winds by Thuille—feature on this program, which opens with Moszkowski’s spirited, early-20th-century Suite in G Minor for Two Violins and Piano.

Poulenc’s delightful Trio for Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano and Beethoven’s Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano—the first of its kind—make up the first half of this program, while the second half features pianist Nicolas Namoradze in Korngold’s magnificent and virtuosic Suite for Piano Left-Hand, Two Violins, and Cello.

Beethoven & Poulenc Trios

Two of today’s most electrifying classical musicians—violinist Paul Huang and pianist Zoltán Fejérvári—join the Miami String Quartet for Chausson’s lyrical and bravura Concerto in D Major on a program that also includes one of Mendelssohn’s teenaged masterpieces: the String Quartet in A Minor—a work that features several nods to Beethoven, who died only a few months before the piece was written.

The dynamic Miami String Quartet plays one of the most beloved works for string quartet, Dvořák’s American Quartet, which the composer wrote while living in the US, and another Czech delight: Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet, a lively suite of international dance miniatures that span the waltz to the tango. The Miami opens the program with a work that marks Schubert’s entrée into his mature compositional years: the Quartettsatz.
