LACO presents music that unifies us during times of dissonance with the premiere of Derrick Skye’s multicultural exploration, To Be A Horizon, which engages in an endless pursuit of connection in order to deconstruct musical and cultural divides. Beethoven’s transitional Symphony No. 4 provides a contrast, celebrating Beethoven’s legacy of breaking musical boundaries.

“Few string quartets can command the stage like the Calder Quartet,” declared The Washington Post of this versatile and vibrant ensemble that excels equally at composer collaborations and standard-setting performances of classics. They set out to do just that with two programs mixing it up with chamber music milestones and thrilling new voices. In this program, Antoine Hunter, a superbly gifted dancer/choreographer, founder of Urban Jazz Dance Company, and advocate for the Deaf community, expresses his experience in a hearing world through dance.

This season, Musical Interludes explores the work and legacies of three influential music educators: Antonio Salieri, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Nadia Boulanger. In the second concert of the 23/24 season we focus on the work of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, renowned for his richly textured orchestrations and use of Russian folk melodies. Join us for an exquisite afternoon of chamber music at the Winter Chamber Music Festival, featuring the renowned Calder Quartet. This event is scheduled for Sunday, January 14, 2024, at 3:00pm CST, taking place in the prestigious Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The Calder Quartet, celebrated for their imaginative and skillful creations, will present a diverse program including works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Thomas Adès, Caroline Shaw, and Claude Debussy.

The Calder Quartet, consisting of Benjamin Jacobson and Tereza Stanislav on violins, Jonathan Moerschel on viola, and Eric Byers on cello, has been hailed by the Los Angeles Times for consistently reaching new levels of excellence. Their performance is anticipated to be a highlight of the festival, showcasing their ability to explore a broad spectrum of repertoire and fulfill the composer’s vision with every performance.

The program for the afternoon includes Beethoven's String Quartet No. 3 in D Major, Op. 18, No. 3, Thomas Adès' The Four Quarters, Caroline Shaw's Entr'acte, and Debussy's String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10. This selection promises an engaging experience for all attendees, from classical music aficionados to those new to chamber music.

Tickets are priced at $30 for the general public and $10 for students with valid ID. However, please note that tickets have sold out, highlighting the high demand and anticipation for this performance.

“Close Quarters” continues with Bach ‘s <em>Brandenburg</em> Concerto No. 5 led by Music Director <a>Jaime Martín</a> on flute. Jaime Martín and Creative Director <a>James Darrah</a> have partnered with L.A.-based mixed media artist <a>Ardeshir Tabrizi</a> to create a genuinely exciting piece of art that celebrates collaboration in an age of isolation.

Principal Clarinet Joshua Ranz — hailed in the Los Angeles Times for his “stunning rendition” of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto — tackles another musical masterpiece by Mozart: the timeless Clarinet Quintet.
