Turning brass into gold: five young trumpeters from Great Britain, Sweden, and Ukraine know the formula that countless alchemists have sought in vain. Founded four years ago at London’s Royal Academy of Music, Fiveby5 produces a radiant, golden brass sound with a brilliant sheen and has already won numerous prizes. Most recently, the quintet won the prestigious Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition in 2025. This success has, among other things, led to their appearance at “In the Streets: City Stage”: the varied program ranges from Bach, Rameau, and Mozart to the rousing Hoe-Down from Aaron Copland’s cowboy ballet Rodeo.

The Musikfest Berlin opens with Le Grand Macabre by György Ligeti and at the same time celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Berliner Festspiele. Ligeti’s only opera is a profoundly-black parable of war and the end of the world, but ultimately humour gains the upper hand and indirectly also helps in overcoming the fear of death. It is therefore no surprise that this satire is one of the most frequently performed works of contemporary music theatre. Nicholas Collon leads the way through Ligeti’s grotesque doomsday scenario as the chief conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, assisted by the Helsinki Chamber Choir and an international ensemble of soloists. Thanks to the Helsinki Festival, Ligeti’s “anti-anti-opera”, as the composer himself called it, will be heard for the first time in Finland just a few days previously.

Hungarian-American pianist Julia Hamos presents a program that bridges centuries and styles and features two of the most important composers from Hungary. Beginning with a selection from Kurtág’s Játékok, she navigates through Haydn’s Sonata in E minor, Ligeti’s Études (Arc-en-ciel, Der Zauberlehrling, Fanfares), and Mozart’s Sonata in A minor, culminating in Schumann’s beloved Fantasie in C Major. Hamos’s adventurous spirit and compelling artistry promise an evening of compelling musical exploration.

Three piano concertos in a single evening – each one building a bridge to the past. Maurice Ravel composed his Piano Concerto in G “in the spirit of Mozart,” yet it also shimmers with hints of jazz and Basque folk music. In Credo, Arvo Pärt draws on the famous C major Prelude from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, juxtaposing familiar tonality with avant-garde techniques. And György Kurtág – who celebrated his 100th birthday in February 2026 – looks back to the free associations of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Op. 27 piano sonatas in his mesmerizing spatial work … quasi una fantasia …, which positions the instruments all around the audience. These three strikingly different concertos are set alongside America – A Prophecy, a dark, apocalyptic vision by the British composer Thomas Adès, who conducts the performance himself. The work confronts the destruction of Mayan culture by the Spanish conquistadors, with a soprano cast in the role of a warning seer. And at the very start of the concert,  in György Ligeti’s Poème Symphonique, 100 metronomes will begin ticking at the same time. One by one, they gradually fall silent. When the last metronome stops, says Víkingur Ólafsson, it feels “like the end of life.”

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields was founded by Sir Neville Marriner

in 1958 and is currently led by Music Director Joshua Bell. In 1967, the Academy Chamber Ensemble was formed to perform the larger scale chamber music repertoire with players who customarily worked together, instead of the usual string quartet with additional guests. Drawn from the principal players of the orchestra, the Chamber Ensemble’s touring commitments are extensive and include regular tours of Europe and North America, whilst recording contracts with Philips Classics, Hyperion, and Chandos have led to the release of over thirty CDs. The Chamber Ensemble now performs in multiple configurations, including the Academy Wind Ensemble, which returns to North America with wind quintet repertoire in April 2026.

The Isidore Quartet skyrocketed to the heights of the music world since winning the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Banff International String Quartet Competition and their debut at DACAMERA in 2023. They return with a strikingly diverse program, juxtaposing Schubert’s quartet with twentieth and twenty-first century works. We begin with the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti’s second quartet, where numerous musical lines weave together to create a dramatic soundscape. Pulitzer Prize-winner Tyshawn Sorey’s Everything Changes, Nothing Changes is a tour-de-force of subtle voicings, beautifully shifting harmonies and pulsating string sounds. We close with Schubert’s deeply expressive “Rosamunde” Quartet, admired for its emotional directness and eloquent beauty.

Paul Lay and Joël Suhubiette, artistic director of the Les Éléments Chamber Choir, pursued a parallel musical career that took them to Toulouse and then to Paris. The two musicians share a curiosity for all types of music, which they enjoy exploring and bringing into dialogue in original creations. Their encounter sparked a desire to confront their worlds and blend them into a unique creation. In this unique program, for which he composed the music inspired by poems by Pablo Neruda, Henry David Thoreau, Victor Hugo, and Emily Dickinson, Paul Lay presents several original pieces for choir and jazz trio around the theme of light. These pages are complemented by arrangements of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Henry Purcell, and György Ligeti for choir and jazz trio.

Around 250 years separate the Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach from the Hungarian composer György Ligeti, one of the most distinguished representatives of New Music in the 20th century. Yet they have something in common: the radical concentration of compositional means with which they advanced into new realms of expression. It is therefore a fascinating dialogue when Bach's famous "Goldberg Variations," a crown jewel of keyboard literature to this day, encounters György Ligeti's String Quartet No. 1. While Bach uses a simply enchanting melody, which he develops into 30 variations, Ligeti takes a short four-note motif, which he then allows to undergo a series of metamorphoses.

The Boston Musical Intelligencer praises the Isidore String Quartet’s “invigorating and refreshing” playing and “bold virtuosity.” Winner of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the group was formed in 2019 at the Juilliard School. Since that time, the quartet has appeared in major series throughout North America, collaborating with eminent performers including James Ehnes, Jeremy Denk, Shai Wosner, and Jon Nakamatsu. The Isidore Quartet’s 2024-25 season included concert appearances across the US and Canada, as well as at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and multiple cities in Germany. Since their Banff Competition-winning performance featuring Billy Childs’s String Quartet No. 2 (“Awakenings”), the quartet has developed a strong connection to the composer’s works, and in the 2025-26 season, they will premiere a new string quartet written for them by Childs.

Additionally, Janine Jansen joins the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Sergei Prokofiev's lyrical and virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major. The concert begins with the Swedish premiere of Salonen's Tiu  (Finnish for a dozen), which was written for the 20th anniversary of Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Salonen himself describes the work as 'palindromes, fanfares, and clouds for orchestra.’

CARION is a Danish/Swedish/Latvian wind quintet, which is both well-founded in the traditional classical wind quintet repertoire, but has also achieved enthusiastic reviews for their performances of lesser-known and newer repertoire within the wind quintet genre in many places in Europe, the USA, and Brazil. Join us on a musical space adventure like no other when the Odense Symphony Orchestra explores known and unknown galaxies in a giant program with the biggest draw. Gustav Holst's Planeterne is a symphonic masterpiece that requires considerable instrumental muscle to realize, and the 7 movements that encapsulate the essence of the planets in our solar system are here followed by Colin Matthews's addition: Pluto – despite the fact that we are now no longer allowed to call the one planet. Ligeti's Atmosphères is the sound of being stretched out in space with no possibility of coming back – and that's what Stanley Kubrick heard when he catapulted the piece to world fame as an invisible and eerie co-star in his ground-breaking film Space Travel in 2001.

Pianist Anna Geniushene returns to Tippet Rise to play alongside pianist Lukas Geniušas, in his debut at the art center. The husband-and-wife duo have been performing together for over ten years, while also maintaining celebrated individual careers. Geniushene was the 2022 recipient of the prestigious Cliburn Silver Medal, and Geniušas is the laureate of several prominent international competitions, notably Silver Medalist at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and at the 2010 International Chopin competition. In the entertaining, hour-long concerts featuring the string players of Ensemble Resonanz, you can listen in a relaxed atmosphere, express yourself, sing along to well-known songs and move freely. Here, everyone can be themselves. This makes the format particularly suitable for people with dementia and their relatives. All venues are accessible.

In the popular chamber music series “Workshop.Dialogue.Music”, musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker introducing themselves and their instruments, and talking in a relaxed atmosphere about the works presented, their interpretation and their approach. Questions and a dialogue with the audience are very welcome! A new feature is that visitors can enjoy a French breakfast from 11:00 onwards, before the concert begins at 11:30. Breakfast is included in the ticket price.

Pentecost Festival: Chamber Concert

For almost three minutes, the cinema audience looks at a black still image while the spherical soundscapes of György Ligeti's "Atmosphères" wander through the hall. Stanley Kubrick's cinematic masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey" begins with this introduction to the dissolution of time and space. Instead of using specially composed film music, Kubrick preferred to use magnificently composed concert music. With his violin concerto, Igor Stravinsky found an idiosyncratic, almost cheerful approach to the genre. With baroque and romantic stylistic borrowings, he plays with the audience's listening expectations, only to then ironically break through the familiar. Prokofiev's first violin concerto is interpreted by Leonidas Kavakos, one of the most accomplished violin virtuosos of our time, who is praised for his unique violin sound. The road to the creation of Brahms' first symphony was long and rocky, but the composition of his "Second" was quick and easy. Since its successful premiere in 1877, Brahms' "pastoral" Second Symphony has been considered his most popular symphonic work, conducted here by the future chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic, Lahav Shani.
