The Esmé Quartet, one of the world’s most watched young ensembles, is celebrated for its depth and maturity, as noted by the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Formed in 2016 at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany, the quartet comprises four musicians who have been friends since their youth: Wonhee Bae and Yuna Ha on violin, Dimitri Murrath on viola, and Ye-Eun Heo on cello. The ensemble has rapidly gained a worldwide reputation for its exceptional artistry and achievement, winning the prestigious Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in 2018, along with several other accolades.

The Esmé Quartet is acclaimed for its spellbinding dynamics, stylistically assured interpretations, and precision ensemble playing. Their performances are known for their warm sound and powerful stage presence, bringing together four distinct musical personalities into a cohesive, close-knit group passionately dedicated to the string quartet repertoire. The ensemble has performed at renowned venues and festivals worldwide, including the Lucerne Festival, Wigmore Hall, and the Aix-en-Provence festival, among others.

Their program features a rich selection of works, including Mozart's String Quartet in D Major, K. 575, Ligeti's String Quartet No. 1, and Schubert's String Quartet in G Major, D. 887. As part of Tippet Rise’s Wander series, this concert will take place among works of art located on the art center’s Cottonwood Campus, including Iron Tree by Ai Weiwei and Daydreams and Cursive Takes a Holiday by Patrick Dougherty. Performing together as a group, returning flutist Jessica Sindell will be joined by debuting artists including oboist Tamer Edlebi, clarinetist Afendi Yusuf, bassoonist Jake Thonis, and horn player Nathaniel Silberschlag, offering a unique opportunity to hear these talented musicians outside their orchestral settings. The group will take the audience on a trip to Hungary, Argentina, and back to the United States with music by György Ligeti, Endre Szervánszky, Astor Piazzolla, and Samuel Barber.

Our 51st season begins with a thrilling program that spotlights the genius of three masters. Ligeti’s enchanting Six Bagatelles is a playful excursion through the wide range of delights only a wind quintet can offer, and Beethoven’s landmark Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 69, revels in the virtuosic demands placed on both the piano and cello, played here by Zoltán Fejérvári and, in his Festival debut, Narek Hakhnazaryan, whose performances the San Francisco Chronicle hailed as “nothing short of magnificent.” The program comes to a spectacular close with Mendelssohn’s superlative D Minor Piano Trio, which Schumann called “the master trio of our time.”

The evening will commence with Joseph Haydn's Piano Trio in G major, followed by a selection of Hungarian Folk Songs by Béla Bartók, and György Ligeti's Concerto for Piano & Orchestra. After a brief interval, the concert will resume with Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio for Clarinet, Cello & Piano, "Gassenhauer", Robert Schumann's Blumenstück, and a trio of works by Thomas Adès, including Növények, Concerto Conciso, and the composer himself taking the conductor's baton.

Kirill Gerstein will be joined on stage by a stellar lineup of musicians, including Katia Skanavi and Joseph Havlat on piano, Katalin Karolyi as mezzo-soprano, and a selection of LSO Musicians, ensuring an evening of exceptional performances. The concert is set to conclude at approximately 9pm.

Join us for an evening of groundbreaking chamber music as the Takt Trio takes the stage at the Miller Theatre at Columbia University on Monday, May 20, 2024, at 6 PM. This unique Pop-Up Concert celebrates the 100th birthday of György Ligeti, featuring his Horn Trio, a piece written in honor of Johannes Brahms' 150th birthday. Alongside Ligeti's monumental work, the Takt Trio will perform two brand new horn trios by contemporary composers Marcos Balter and Hilda Paredes, commissioned especially for this occasion. These compositions promise to add a modern twist to the chamber music tradition, with the New York premieres of Paredes' "Koan" (2023) and Balter's new work for Takt Trio (2024).

The evening offers a rare opportunity to experience music up close and personal with onstage seating, available on a first-come, first-served basis. The program features Anna Meredith’s astonishing 1980s electronica meets ’90s clubland composition Tuggemo, the first movement of Edgar Meyer’s virtuosic Concert Duo for Violin and Bass, Courtney Bryan’s gospel and jazz-flavored fusion of the sacred and secular, Soli Deo Gloria for two guitars, and the world premiere of Dmitri Tymoczko’s Nerds, for chamber ensemble. The evening concludes with Angélica Negrón’s dóabin, inspired by the invented language of a pair of twins; acclaimed composer Tyshawn Sorey’s shimmering, lyrical work, For Fred Lerdahl; and avant-garde icon György Ligeti’s minimalist composition, Six Bagatelles, for woodwind quintet.

Aaron Schwebel returns to our stage to perform the entire The Four Seasons Recomposed by Richter whose re-writing of Vivaldi’s work moves it away from being the omnipresent piece of muzak that it has become. In contrast, Ligeti’s violin concerto, creating unexpected new sounds combined in novel ways, even uses mistuned string instruments, ocarinas and slide whistles to suggest Hungarian folksong. Shimmering harmonies, slow-moving, soaring melodies and rhythmic complexities and the “mad virtuosity” of the soloist’s role all contribute to the high level of excitement in this piece. Forming a bridge between the “baroque” harpsichord material in the Richter and the modern nature of Ligeti’s work, a solo harpsichord piece by Ligeti appears as a musical amuse-bouche.

The musical phrases of Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring effectively paint a story of American pioneers in the nineteenth century. The star violinist Christian Tetzlaff returns to Berwaldhallen with Robert Schumann’s violin concerto, a controversial work that has become one of the composer’s most popular. Another work that faced resistance at the time is Sibelius’s fourth symphony, although it has since been taken up by musicians and music lovers across the world, including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and its music director, Daniel Harding. And finally, György Ligeti’s Atmosphères, an evocative work that both penetrates the very soul of the listener and reaches far into the cosmos.

Ballets from three choreographers closely associated with the Company are gathered here. Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia ranks among his most distinctive and popular works, with its thrillingly spiky choreography set to the modernist music of György Ligeti. Peter Martins’s Barber Violin Concerto is the rare dance in the repertory that combines elements of both ballet and modern dance, with one couple barefoot and another sporting traditional ballet footwear. And Justin Peck’s The Times Are Racing, a galvanizingly energetic audience favorite since its debut in 2017, finds the dancers in footwear of yet another kind: sneakers.

On Friday 24 November, ATHELAS presents the second concert in the series European trendsetters, where Danish audiences are introduced to masterpieces from a number of the composers who have defined the European scenes for the last hundred years. The stormy and lyrical lushness of Hungarian Franz Liszt’s symphonic poem Les Préludes (1854) opens our program. English composer and conductor Thomas Adès and Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein celebrate the centennial of Hungarian composer György Ligeti with his kaleidoscopic Piano Concerto. Stravinsky’s ballet score Orpheus (1947) retells the classic myth in pure and elegant musical strokes. In closing, Adès shares what he calls his “single-movement symphony” Tevot, a journey of “sudden and instant changes of landscape.”

Accordo is a string ensemble composed of present and former principal string players of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra. The University of Michigan Contemporary Directions Ensemble presents a tribute to composer György Ligeti, marking the 100th anniversary of his birth. The program includes his iconic Chamber Concerto, as well the rarely heard Hamburg Concerto, featuring SMTD faculty member Adam Unsworth on French horn. Also featured are Unsuk Chin’s Advice from a Caterpillar, Stravinsky’s ebullient Dumbarton Oaks, and Colmena by Michigan alumna Arlene Sierra, who will be in attendance as a guest composer.

London Sinfonietta celebrates the life of provocatively distinctive composer György Ligeti in his centenary year. Beloved of Stanley Kubrik, Ligeti’s richly avant-garde “micro-polyphony” explores how texture can be a structural device, and creates musical layers that create effects ranging from meditative stillness to cosmic existential terror. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard joins the ensemble for this performance, which concludes with the composer’s extraordinary Piano Concerto.

Having won the Banff and Bordeaux International String Quartet Competitions, the emergent Marmen arrives from London to perform a program featuring a haunting work by Ligeti between two classical period masterworks.

Pianist Nicolas Namoradze, who won the Honens International Piano Competition in 2018 and made his Festival debut in 2022, returns with a rich recital program that features selections from one of Bach’s most seminal works, The Art of Fugue, and Schubert’s final piano sonata—the exquisite Sonata in B-flat Major, which Schubert wrote just months before his death at the age of 31.

Kirill Gerstein, one of the world’s most acclaimed pianists, joins forces with conductor Alan Gilbert and 21 Festival musicians to give the Festival’s first-ever performance of Ligeti’s magnificent Piano Concerto, a masterpiece of originality as witnessed in the composer’s treatment of rhythm, harmony, and more. The renowned pianist Juho Pohjonen joins a string quartet of musicians for Elgar’s late-Romantic Piano Quintet, known for its gorgeous second movement, and dazzling violinists Jennifer Frautschi and Jessica Lee open the program with duos by Bartók.

The FLUX Quartet gives the US premiere of Charlotte Bray’s Festival-commissioned string quartet Ungrievable Lives, which takes its name and inspiration from an art installation by Caroline Burraway honoring the world’s 13 million child refugees. The program also features the first-ever Festival performance of Ligeti’s absorbing, Bartók-influenced String Quartet No. 1 and the world premieres of works by Ryan Lindveit and Angela Elizabeth Slater, this year’s participants in the Festival’s annual Young Composers String Quartet Project.

New Music with Flux Quartet

Known for injecting music and fun into the air for unsuspecting passersby by appearing in nontraditional venues such as grocery stores, bars, and other public places, the Sinta Quartet has also performed in formal venues including Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Hall, and the Beijing Center for the Performing Arts. With these Music Box performances, they combine the best of both worlds, offering a program of short works packed with energetic brio, running the gamut from the mid-20th century to Irish reels, with stops for minimalism, bluegrass—even a Hungarian barn dance—along the way.

New friends and old favorites sit side by side in a program of masterpieces from three centuries, performed by SMF faculty and fellows. Flutist Jasmine Choi weaves a magical web of sound in Claude Debussy’s mesmerizing Syrinx, the myth of a water nymph pursued by the Greek god Pan. Hungarian composer György Ligeti’s 1953 work, Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet, is fiendishly difficult for the players and hugely enjoyable for the audience. New SMF faculty cellist Gabriel Cabezas joins pianist Robert Levin in Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No. 2, in which the visionary young Beethoven juxtaposes intense drama with jovial humor. SMF faculty and fellows join together for Mendelssohn’s magnificent Octet for Strings, a musical miracle written when the composer was only 16.

The Chineke! Wind Quintet comprises players of the Chineke! Orchestra and the ensemble is delighted to bring a varied programme of wind repertoire to the Shaldon Festival. Highlights include the music of African-American composers William Grant Still (Summerland, 1935) and Valerie Coleman (Red Clay & Mississippi Delta, 2016). Both works speak to the Black experience in the American South, and are presented alongside music from Gyorgy Ligeti, Paul Hindemith, Maurice Ravel.

Shaldon Festival: Chineke! Wind Quintet

Jamie Martin takes us on a tour of Hungarian music from the original rockstar, Franz Liszt, to the modern avant-garde genius of György Ligeti, whose 100th anniversary of his birth we celebrate in 2023.

Ligeti’s scores usually project a sensual appeal to which audiences overwhelmingly respond, even though its vocabulary is not that of most other music. Concert Românesc highlights the composer’s interest in the folk music he encountered as a child and later studied in great detail

George Li, an ultra-virtuosic pianist, takes center stage in the Liszt with blazing octaves, intricate ornamental figurations, and arpeggios running up and down the entire keyboard. The Washington Post said LI “combines staggering technical prowess, a sense of command and depth of expression.”
