The clavichord instrument emerged in the 1400’s, as referenced to an instrument owned by John II, the Good King of France, called an eschiquier, which resembled an organ, but operated by means of strings, according to writings of the king’s doctor, Henri Arnaut. The word “Clavichord” appeared in German writings during this time, and a German altar-carving from 1425 depicts the instrument. Like the harpsichord, it combined the keyboard of the organ, but incorporated the hammers striking strings found in the Renaissance dulcimer. By the Baroque era, the clavichord had become the predominant practice instrument and compositional tool for composers. Sound is created when brass strings are struck by tangents, which are small metal blades. Because of the instrument’s size and construction, it could not produce a sound loud enough to be used for performance outside of private home concerts.

The Esmé Quartet, one of the world’s most watched young ensembles, is celebrated for its depth and maturity, as noted by the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Formed in 2016 at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany, the quartet comprises four musicians who have been friends since their youth: Wonhee Bae and Yuna Ha on violin, Dimitri Murrath on viola, and Ye-Eun Heo on cello. The ensemble has rapidly gained a worldwide reputation for its exceptional artistry and achievement, winning the prestigious Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in 2018, along with several other accolades.

The Esmé Quartet is acclaimed for its spellbinding dynamics, stylistically assured interpretations, and precision ensemble playing. Their performances are known for their warm sound and powerful stage presence, bringing together four distinct musical personalities into a cohesive, close-knit group passionately dedicated to the string quartet repertoire. As part of Tippet Rise’s Wander series, this concert will take place among works of art located on the art center’s Cottonwood Campus, including Iron Tree by Ai Weiwei and Daydreams and Cursive Takes a Holiday by Patrick Dougherty. Performing together as a group, returning flutist Jessica Sindell will be joined by debuting artists including oboist Tamer Edlebi, clarinetist Afendi Yusuf, bassoonist Jake Thonis, and horn player Nathaniel Silberschlag, offering a unique opportunity to hear these talented musicians outside their orchestral settings. This unique Pop-Up Concert celebrates the 100th birthday of György Ligeti, featuring his Horn Trio, a piece written in honor of Johannes Brahms' 150th birthday. Alongside Ligeti's monumental work, the Takt Trio will perform two brand new horn trios by contemporary composers Marcos Balter and Hilda Paredes, commissioned especially for this occasion. These compositions promise to add a modern twist to the chamber music tradition, with the New York premieres of Paredes' "Koan" (2023) and Balter's new work for Takt Trio (2024).

In his Carnaval, a work for piano solo, Robert Schumann depicts various characters such as Pierrot and Harlequin as well as his fellow composers, such as Schubert, Chopin and Paganini. Maurice Ravel transcribed the rich colour palette of this imaginative piano work for the orchestra. The German composer Hans Zender also drew on Schumann’s work for inspiration. His famous Fantasie opus 17 served as a starting point for Zender’s Schumann-Fantasie, in which he combines the 19th and 20th centuries into one majestic orchestral work. In his Mysteries of the Macabre, György Ligeti pays an absurdist homage to his own career, replete with dark humour and exuberant cynicism, with a starring role for soprano Katrien Baerts. A unique experience and a treat for your eyes and ears!

The evening concludes with Angélica Negrón’s dóabin, inspired by the invented language of a pair of twins; acclaimed composer Tyshawn Sorey’s shimmering, lyrical work, For Fred Lerdahl; and avant-garde icon György Ligeti’s minimalist composition, Six Bagatelles, for woodwind quintet.

Aaron Schwebel returns to our stage to perform the entire The Four Seasons Recomposed by Richter whose re-writing of Vivaldi’s work moves it away from being the omnipresent piece of muzak that it has become. In contrast, Ligeti’s violin concerto, creating unexpected new sounds combined in novel ways, even uses mistuned string instruments, ocarinas and slide whistles to suggest Hungarian folksong. Shimmering harmonies, slow-moving, soaring melodies and rhythmic complexities and the “mad virtuosity” of the soloist’s role all contribute to the high level of excitement in this piece. Forming a bridge between the “baroque” harpsichord material in the Richter and the modern nature of Ligeti’s work, a solo harpsichord piece by Ligeti appears as a musical amuse-bouche.

The star violinist Christian Tetzlaff returns to Berwaldhallen with Robert Schumann’s violin concerto, a controversial work that has become one of the composer’s most popular. Another work that faced resistance at the time is Sibelius’s fourth symphony, although it has since been taken up by musicians and music lovers across the world, including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and its music director, Daniel Harding. And finally, György Ligeti’s Atmosphères, an evocative work that both penetrates the very soul of the listener and reaches far into the cosmos.

Ballets from three choreographers closely associated with the Company are gathered here. Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia ranks among his most distinctive and popular works, with its thrillingly spiky choreography set to the modernist music of György Ligeti. Peter Martins’s Barber Violin Concerto is the rare dance in the repertory that combines elements of both ballet and modern dance, with one couple barefoot and another sporting traditional ballet footwear. And Justin Peck’s The Times Are Racing, a galvanizingly energetic audience favorite since its debut in 2017, finds the dancers in footwear of yet another kind: sneakers.

A program that goes against all conventions with the charismatic conductor Constantinos Carydis. Dance is the focus, and Carydis himself plays the piano - supported by the hr concertmasters Florin Iliescu and Maximilian Junghanns. And there is a violin concerto to experience that goes beyond any norm. Robert Schumann's D minor concerto is a special case. While the composer celebrated the pure joy of life with his "Rhenish Symphony", three years later he lets us look into the depths, perhaps into the abysses, with the violin concerto. It is a completely unconventional, even visionary late work, an exotic island in the midst of the all too ingratiating, beautiful sound concerts of that time. Only a few violinists dare to dance on the volcano - the Japanese Sayaka Shoji is one of them. Her career began at the age of 16 when she won the Paganini Competition in Genoa in 1999. She is the youngest prizewinner to date. She grew up in Italy and Japan, studied in Cologne and now lives in Paris. And she never wanted to be a dancer, but an opera singer – "but I had a very quiet voice. In a way, learning the violin was an alternative, which is why singing became a very important element in my playing."

Under the baton of the South Korean conductor Shiyeon Sung, who made her BRSO debut in 2022, the orchestra will present a captivating program. The evening will begin with an introduction at 6:45 pm, setting the stage for a night of musical brilliance. The program includes Maurice Ravel's enchanting "Boléro," György Ligeti's "Concert Românesc," and "Cello Concerto," along with Ravel's "Tzigane, Rhapsody for violin and orchestra," and the ballet music "Ma mère l’oye."

Highlighting the orchestra's tradition of showcasing its own musicians, concertmaster Anton Barakhovsky will mesmerize with his violin, while principal cellist Sebastian Klinger brings the cello to life with Ligeti’s breathtaking concerto. These solo performances are a testament to the virtuosity and artistry within the ranks of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

Ligeti 100: Boston Symphony Chamber Players

The stormy and lyrical lushness of Hungarian Franz Liszt’s symphonic poem Les Préludes (1854) opens our program. English composer and conductor Thomas Adès and Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein celebrate the centennial of Hungarian composer György Ligeti with his kaleidoscopic Piano Concerto. Stravinsky’s ballet score Orpheus (1947) retells the classic myth in pure and elegant musical strokes. In closing, Adès shares what he calls his “single-movement symphony” Tevot, a journey of “sudden and instant changes of landscape.”

The University of Michigan Contemporary Directions Ensemble presents a tribute to composer György Ligeti, marking the 100th anniversary of his birth. The program includes his iconic Chamber Concerto, as well the rarely heard Hamburg Concerto, featuring SMTD faculty member Adam Unsworth on French horn. Also featured are Unsuk Chin’s Advice from a Caterpillar, Stravinsky’s ebullient Dumbarton Oaks, and Colmena by Michigan alumna Arlene Sierra, who will be in attendance as a guest composer.

London Sinfonietta celebrates the life of provocatively distinctive composer György Ligeti in his centenary year. Beloved of Stanley Kubrik, Ligeti’s richly avant-garde “micro-polyphony” explores how texture can be a structural device, and creates musical layers that create effects ranging from meditative stillness to cosmic existential terror. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard joins the ensemble for this performance, which concludes with the composer’s extraordinary Piano Concerto.

Pianist Nicolas Namoradze, who won the Honens International Piano Competition in 2018 and made his Festival debut in 2022, returns with a rich recital program that features selections from one of Bach’s most seminal works, The Art of Fugue, and Schubert’s final piano sonata—the exquisite Sonata in B-flat Major, which Schubert wrote just months before his death at the age of 31.

Kirill Gerstein, one of the world’s most acclaimed pianists, joins forces with conductor Alan Gilbert and 21 Festival musicians to give the Festival’s first-ever performance of Ligeti’s magnificent Piano Concerto, a masterpiece of originality as witnessed in the composer’s treatment of rhythm, harmony, and more. The renowned pianist Juho Pohjonen joins a string quartet of musicians for Elgar’s late-Romantic Piano Quintet, known for its gorgeous second movement, and dazzling violinists Jennifer Frautschi and Jessica Lee open the program with duos by Bartók.
