1. Chamber Music in Strausberg – Duo and String Quartet

Chamber music in a small, exquisite format. This season's series opens with two string players: Schubert's Erlkönig-Lied, based on Goethe's nature-magical ballad, is performed here in a version for violin and viola – followed by a piece with a rare instrumentation: the violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini once took a Rossini melody for variations, here actually played by the solo double bass. And after the Sarabande by the Norwegian Johan Halvorsen, we arrive at Beethoven, with his early third string trio for violin, viola, and cello. The D major work exudes nothing less than the atmosphere of a pure musical idyll. A salute from the end of the 18th century, a perfect concert finale.

This anniversary year, the now traditional theme weekend at Ulrichshusen Castle is dedicated to the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival itself: the musicians who have shaped and continue to shape it, the adventures that the artists, team, and audience experience together, and, of course, the music itself. Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes a passionate and exacting dive into Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 to make the piece shine. Written during World War II, the Leningrad symphony instantly became a symbol of hope and solidarity. Nearly a century later, it’s still disquietingly topical.
