Don't miss it – because in this concert in our popular organ series, a phenomenal artist unleashes a musical firework: our guest is the American Nathan Laube, who holds a professorship at the Eastman School of Music in New York and is also a consultant for organ studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. As a famous organist, he performs internationally in renowned concert halls and loves to engage his audiences and inspire them for the organ world. The programme is very romantic with outstanding works: His varied recital begins with a vibrant play of colours – in the concert overture written around 1885 by the blind composer Alfred Hollins. César Franck wrote an epic tone poem with orchestral effect with his Fantasie aus den drei Stücken für große Orgel in 1878 for the official opening of the first concert hall organ in France. Nathan Laube then also demonstrates his outstanding virtuosity with two arrangements of significant piano works. Mendelssohn wrote his glowing »Variations sérieuses« in 1841 with »true passion«: In the course of the work, a highly original theme is increasingly harmonically veiled and the expressive range is constantly widened. Liszt pointed far into the future with his »Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses« – and the piece »Funérailles« from this monumental cycle is also one of his most tragic compositions. The programme concludes with a highlight from the oeuvre of French composer Maurice Duruflé: with his three-movement organ suite, he created a milestone of the 20th century – and the finale toccata is still one of the most technically demanding pieces ever written for this instrument.

Live at the Winspear is excited to present performer and pedagogue Nathan Laube for his thrilling debut performance on the Davis Concert Organ. Known for his brilliant playing, gracious demeanour, and creative programming of repertoire spanning five centuries, he has earned high praise from critics and peers alike. The program will include Laube's own transcription of Franz Liszt's Sonata in B Minor, one of his most magnificent works for the keyboard.

In addition to serving as Associate Professor of Organ on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music, and his new position as International Consultant in Organ Studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, UK, Nathan Laube’s extensive recital career includes major venues spanning four continents, with appearances at the Vienna Konzerthaus, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Berlin Philharmonie, Dortmund Konzerthaus, Royal Festival Hall in London, Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana, and the Sejong Center in Seoul.  Highlight performances in the USA include the concert halls of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Seattle, Nashville, Kansas City, and Los Angeles. Notable recent appearances have included the first inaugural recital of the restored Harrison & Harrison organ of King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, as well as performances at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.  In May of 2018 he performed the Hindemith Kammermusik VII with the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker (formerly Orchestra Academy) as part of a residency at the Philharmonie.  For the summer of 2017 he served as the first “Organist in Residence” at the famous 1738 Christiaan Müller organ at the St. Bavo Kerk in Haarlem, the Netherlands.  Nathan also frequently presents concert tours in the United Kingdom, where highlight venues have included York Minster, Canterbury Cathedral, Exeter Cathedral, Ely Cathedral, Hereford Cathedral and Truro Cathedral; and in 2019 he performed Bach’s complete Third Book of the Clavierübung at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
