Gothenburg’s own violin star Ava Bahari is back, presenting a heartfelt and engaging programme together with pianist Nathanaël Gouin. Among other works, we hear Beethoven’s challenging Kreutzer Sonata.

"The Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra shines with Mozart," wrote the WAZ newspaper after a "gripping evening of music" in which the Chinese-born New Zealander Tianyi Lu conducted his Requiem. And the young conductor also brought Mozart with her on her return to the orchestra's podium: this time the last of Mozart's five violin concertos. The Salzburg prodigy was not only one of the most gifted composers in music history, but also an outstanding pianist – and violinist. It's no wonder, then, that he put so much effort into the works for "his" instruments. With the Fifth Violin Concerto, he has created a particularly beautiful contribution: the melodies simply flow, the orchestral part is exceedingly rich, and the solo part is highly demanding.

The final symphony concert of the season presents a Scandinavian program with discoverable works from Sweden and Denmark, as well as a Finnish classic that, surprisingly, originated in Italy. Elfrida Andrée, born in 1841 in Visby on Gotland, was the first female composer in Sweden to venture into the realm of symphonic music. In 1894, she composed her only opera, "Fritiofs Saga," based on a libretto by Selma Lagerlöf, but it was never performed during her lifetime. The trombone concerto by Danish composer Launy Grøndahl from 1924 combines elements of Romanticism, Impressionism, and Nordic folklore and is one of the most significant contributions to the genre. In Lübeck, the piece will be played by the Philharmonic Orchestra's principal trombonist, Stephan Gerblinger.

In the second symphony concert, we welcome another outstanding concert soloist: the Swedish soprano Maria Bengtsson, who has performed at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and the Berlin State Opera, among others, under the baton of Kirill Petrenko, Daniel Barenboim, Simone Young, Philippe Jordan, Vladimir Jurovsky, Riccardo Muti, Sebastian Weigle, and many others. Bengtsson will perform Alban Berg's "Seven Early Songs" with the Symphony Orchestra: the song cycle, which combines texts by forgotten poets such as Paul Hohenberg and Carl Hauptmann with Rilke, Lenau, and Storm, tells the story of a great love.

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra makes a summer guest appearance at Stockholm City Hall this Sunday afternoon in August, marking the centenary of the City Hall organ in the Blue Hall – the largest pipe organ in Scandinavia. The instrument was inaugurated in 1925, two years after the building itself was completed.

Composer Mats Larsson Gothe has had significant success in recent years, including with the opera Löftet ("The Promise") at the Royal Swedish Opera. Already in 2016, he was the focus of Konserthuset’s Composer Weekend Festival. Here, we hear the world premiere of a new cello concerto, featuring internationally renowned Torleif Thedéen as the cello soloist. "The cello concerto for Torleif captures everything that a cello can convey: longing, dreams, pain, and melancholy – but also anger and resignation. I have used the full range of expression", Mats Larsson Gothe explains.

He serves as the concertmaster of the Canton Symphony Orchestra and has performed with several prestigious orchestras. Kowal is also a dedicated teacher and has been a teaching assistant since 2019.

Alban Gerhardt, ‘one of the finest cellists around’ (The Guardian), will then perform Dvořák’s celebrated Cello Concerto. It is a joyous piece, showcasing the rich middle register of the instrument, which the composer had always favoured. Brahms’s triumphant yet troubled Third Symphony, proclaimed by Hans Richter to be the ‘Brahms Eroica’, concludes the programme.
