This year the music world is celebrating not only Bruckner's 200th birthday, but also the 200th birthday of Bedřich Smetana. In the tragic life of the Bohemian composer, the death of his four-year-old daughter was a devastating event. The G minor piano trio, which was written immediately after the family catastrophe, is the painful expression of a grieving father. Joseph Haydn wrote not only his famous last symphonies in London, but also important chamber music. He composed the light-footed C major piano trio for the London-based German pianist Therese Jansen, who was praised for her flawless technique. A sculptor friend of the composer said of Bohuslav Martinů's first piano trio, which has the subtitle "Cinq pièces brèves", that it sounded as if it had been "carved from marble" - a description that Martinů found "very fitting". South of Prague, high above the Vltava River, stands Vyšehrad, the fortress mountain that is the subject of numerous myths and legends. Josef Suk created a special homage to Vyšehrad with his Elegy op. 23. The solemn piece served as a prelude to a tableau vivant, a "living picture" in which actors in frozen poses depicted the sunset at Vyšehrad.

A ‘concerto for birds and orchestra’, Rautavaara’s ‘Cantus Arcticus’ blends recorded birdsong from the Arctic Circle with hauntingly beautiful orchestral music. This is followed by Lutosławski’s compelling and atmospheric Fourth Symphony which packs a dazzling variety of sounds into a brief but eventful two movements. Folk-inspired ‘Suita Rustica’ by Kaprálová draws on traditional Moravian melodies to create a colourful and energetic tribute to her Czech heritage. The evening ends with Martinů’s big-hearted Fourth Symphony, written in America in 1945, an optimistic work brimming with lyrical melodies.

Join the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center for their first Harris Theater appearance of the season. Acclaimed pianist Anne-Marie McDermott takes the stage with a group of world-class wind players, offering classics written for various combinations of instruments. To close the program, the full cast gathers for Poulenc’s effervescent Sextet for Winds and Piano, which the composer described as “an homage to the wind instruments I have loved from the moment I began composing.”

Three 20th-century works prominently featuring the oboe. Martinů’s Quartet was composed in New York in 1947. Poulenc’s delightful duo Sonata (1962) was his final work, described by a New York Times critic as ‘a paradoxical mix of the elegiac, the suave and the clever’; the composer dedicated it to the memory of Prokofiev, the material of whose 1924 Quintet largely derives from his ballet, Trapeze.

»If music be the food of love, play on!« William Shakespeare once wrote – and in the same spirit, Jakub Hrůša, as our musical »chef de cuisine«, has once again put together sumptuous treats for our audience that unmistakably carry his personal signature. And we start off with a delicacy: With Brahms’ concerto, composed in 1887, which is much more than just a small appetiser – and also follows a quote by Adelbert von Chamisso, that says: »Love is not a solo. Love is a duet.« For the two celebrated soloists Vilde Frang and Sol Gabetta, it was a heartfelt wish to perform this double concerto together at some point – and they will certainly add their artistic flavours to blend into a »giant eight-stringed violin« in accordance with the composer’s wishes. The musical menu also features works by two other favourite composers of our Chief Conductor: Martinů’s Symphony No. 3, which he wrote in 1944 while in exile in America, contains echoes of the folk music of his Czech homeland, as well as skilfully processing the zeitgeist of that time – and, most importantly, indulging in great emotions. After this mighty symphony, we serve Dvořák’s »Scherzo capriccioso«, because Jakub Hrůša loves to break with the conventions of a traditional concert programme time and again. The name already suggests a playfully tossed-together dish and this imaginative, lavishly orchestrated and skilfully crafted scherzo from 1883 is not so little, but it is still a charming nightcap: it is one of the many captivating works from Dvořák’s pen to win people’s hearts by storm.

The VSO Chamber players is pleased to present a collection of four pieces by three of the great composers of the twentieth century. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Five Pieces for Two Violins and Piano is a surprisingly charming collection of simple popular music – arrangements of ballet suites, an animated cartoon, and the film “The Gadfly”. Benjamin Britten’s Second String Quartet was written to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Henry Purcell,  a composer Britten revered above all others. Our third offering is a wonderful string sextet written by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu. The work was composed in under a week, and yet won first prize in a composition competition. The composer refused to collect his reward for several weeks, believing his friends were merely playing a trick on him by insisting he had won. The final work on the programme brings all eight VSO musicians together for Shostakovich’s Two Pieces for String Octet. Shostakovich completed the work at only nineteen years old, and proclaimed the scherzo movement to be “the very best thing I have written” (Laurel Faye, “Shostakovich, A Life”). Audiences will undoubtedly be transported by this exquisite collection of some of the most beautiful and varied chamber music of the twentieth century.

It swept across the Atlantic during the roaring 20s and was the perfect soundtrack to a freewheeling, carefree decade. Paris became the European epicenter of le jazz hot, and composers flocked there eager to see and hear the hottest musical trend. Four masterpieces attest to the influence of Jazz: From Milhaud’s quirky, jaunty score conceived as a soundtrack for a Chaplin comedy; Ravel’s virtuoso, glittering Piano Concerto; the colorful, evocative Jazz Suite by Martinu; and Gershwin’s wide-eyed Parisian musical impression—complete with honking taxi horns.

This concert is a celebration of the talent and achievements of our alumni, featuring performances by accomplished graduates who have made significant strides in their musical careers. The program for the evening includes a diverse range of pieces that showcase the versatility and skill of our alumni. Highlights include:

- Lauren Hoffman ’19, flute, performing Martinů's Sonata for Flute and Piano, movement 3, under the guidance of instructors Barbara Mullens-Geier and Rachael Denny.
- Frank Watnick ’18, voice, delivering a heartfelt rendition of Lehár's Dein ist mein ganzes Herz from Das Land des Lächelns, taught by Mariné Ter-Kazaryan.
- Eddie Zhou ’22, violin, taking on Dvořák's Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53, with instruction from Rachael Denny, Aimée Kreston, and Andrew Cook.
- Erica Lee ’17, piano, interpreting Debussy's Prelude No. 5, Book II, Bruyères and Prelude from Pour le Piano, under the tutelage of Susan Svrček.
- Meleeah Abkarian ’10, voice, performing Massenet's Adieu notre petite table, also instructed by Mariné Ter-Kazaryan.
- Katelyn Vahala ’14, piano, showcasing her skills with guidance from Susan Svrček and Andrew Cook.

To celebrate the opening of the 2023 Summer Music Festival Scott Yoo and the Festival musicians will join forces with the Movement Arts Collective for a new setting of Copland's Appalachian Spring, choreographed by Ryan Lawrence. Also on the program are Beethoven’s Spring sonata for violin and piano, a duet for violin and viola by Czech composer Martinu, and a work for voice and strings by Korean-American composer and Scott Yoo’s professor at Harvard, Earl Kim.

Dvořák traveled to America in the 1890s, and this wild, new country thrilled him. He admired the beauty of African American spirituals and was fascinated by Native American traditions. When describing his “New World” symphony, he said, “I tried to write only in the spirit of those national American melodies,” but his Ninth is clearly an expression of both the Old World and the new. It is joined by Martinů’s Second Symphony, commissioned by Cleveland’s Czech community for the Orchestra, and the world premiere of a new concerto by Wynton Marsalis, written for principal trumpet Michael Sachs.

Packed full of musical imagery, Ethel Smyth’s “The Wreckers Overture” is a perfect opening for this concert. Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů’s richly imaginative “Rhapsody-Concerto for viola and orchestra features the virtuoso soloist Ivo Bokulic. The evening concludes with “Pines of Rome” by Ottorino Respighi the orchestral painter who commanded a palette of spectacular range. The Roman landscape is evoked by his transformative visions and memories.

The three most familiar members of the chamber music family—winds, strings, and piano—join forces for a program rich in sonorities and cultural variety. Bohuslav Martinů, who inherited the mantle of Dvořák to become the most famous Czech composer of his day, left a huge catalog of chamber music. The Austrian Ludwig Thuille excelled in opera but his chamber music is now making a well-deserved comeback. And Germany’s Ludwig Spohr, one of his era’s greatest violinists, composed prolifically and skillfully for all combinations of chamber ensembles, the nonet is among his finest compositions.

Join us for an enchanting evening with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra as we present "The Music of Couture: Stravinsky and Chanel’s Paris." This special concert event will take place on Friday, April 7, 2023, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM at The Forum at Town Hall Seattle, located at 1119 8th Avenue, Seattle, WA, 98101.

Celebrating 100 years since Coco Chanel sold her first bottle of No.5, this performance delves into the vibrant music that echoed through the burgeoning Parisian world of couture. The evening will feature "The Soldier's Tale," a dramatic suite by Igor Stravinsky, who was rumored to be Chanel's lover. The program also includes Germaine Tailleferre's dream-like "Image" and other exuberant pieces from Paris' Jazz Age, such as "The Creation of the World" by Darius Milhaud and "La revue de cuisine" by Bohuslav Martinů.

Under the baton of Geoffrey Larson, the orchestra will transport you to the heart of Paris with these captivating works. The concert will begin with a prelude at 7:00 PM featuring Jeremy Bacon on jazz piano, and will conclude with a postlude performance by Kim Maguire, jazz voice.

The Otto Bar will be open, offering refreshments within the intimate setting of Town Hall's Forum performance space. This is a unique opportunity to experience the intersection of music and fashion that defined an era, brought to life by the talented musicians of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra.

Formed by members of Amsterdam's famed Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO), Camerata RCO most notably performs chamber music in multiple formations from duet to small chamber orchestra. For more than a half century, renowned American conductor Dennis Russell Davies has conducted many of the world’s finest orchestras and opera companies and is widely considered one of the most innovative and adventurous conductors in the classical music world. In 2018, Maestro Davies became the Artistic Director & Chief Conductor of the Filharmonie Brno, an orchestra with roots that go back to the 1870s, when then-young composer Leoš Janáček endeavored to establish a Czech symphony orchestra in Brno (the traditional capital of Moravia), now the second largest city in the Czech Republic after Prague. The present orchestra was created in 1956 and has been among the leading Czech orchestras in both size and importance, where the programing of works by Janáček has always been at the core of the orchestra’s repertory. Appropriately, Maestro Davies’s stimulating CAMA concert will feature an outstanding All‑Czech Program of works by three of the greatest Czech composers: Janáček, Dvořák, and Martinů. Maki Namekawa is a leading figure among today’s pianists, bringing to audiences’ attention contemporary music by international composers. In 2019 Philip Glass composed his first Piano Sonata especially for Maki Namekawa, which she premiered that year at Piano‑Festival Ruhr.

In this quirky and humor-infused program, we highlight our Young Artist Winners, James Johnston and Sarah Harris.  We also welcome our area youth orchestras on stage to join us for Franz Schubert’s Overture “In the Italian Style”, a Rossini-inspired work that captures the effervescence of the lively Italian opera overture with beautiful operatic melodies and blazing finale.  The evening begins with the whimsical Little Suite from Comedy on the Bridge, an opera where all the main characters get stranded on a bridge.  The program takes a twist in Telemann’s Don Quichotte, a sort of musical novel where the over-hyped image of Cervantes’ Don Quixote has a unique take on reality.  The first sounds of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 will reveal instantly why it received the nickname, “Drumroll”.  What follows is a symphony full of imagination and wit that exemplifies a grandmaster of symphonic writing over sixty years in the making.

Enjoy a convivial afternoon of chamber music and mingle with brilliant young artists at Music@Menlo’s 2023 Benefit Concert and Reception. This special event supports the Ann S. Bowers Young Artist Fund, and features alumni of Music@Menlo’s Chamber Music Institute. The concert includes a sneak preview of what’s to come at the 2023 festival, and a dessert-and-wine reception with the musicians.

Dvořák’s optimistic Carnival Overture was written shortly before he left for his infamous travels to the United States. Martinů’s deeply personal Sixth Symphony originated in New York while he was in exile from Czechoslovakia. Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto unfolds with a sense of drama and romance in the hands of Nobuyuki Tsujii, “the definition of virtuosity” (The Observer).

Always a favorite of Cleveland audiences, the Labèques return to perform the Martinů’s tour de force concerto for two pianos, full of jazzy inflections and high-speed fireworks, pausing only in the slow movement for moments of serene calm. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s iconic Romeo and Juliet, whose sweeping melodies perfectly evoke the breathless passion of the two young lovers.

Join us for an enchanting evening of music and history with "Watch this space: Kirill Gerstein & Friends" at the TonHalle in Munich's Werksviertel-Mitte. This late-night chamber concert, set for Wednesday, 21 September 2022, at 9:00 pm, promises a unique auditory journey back to the wild sound of the 1920s, celebrating 100 years of radio in collaboration with BR-KLASSIK.

The program features an exquisite selection of works that capture the essence of the era, including Francis Poulenc's Trio für Oboe, Fagott und Klavier, Bohuslav Martinů's La revue de cuisine, H.161, and several arrangements of Johann Strauß Sohn's classics by Arnold Schönberg, Anton von Webern, and Alban Berg.
