"Creative Coast" will showcase two remarkable artists: Gabriel Cabezas, known for his mastery of the amplified cello, and Bora Yoon, a visionary vocalist and sound artist. The evening will premiere two significant works. The first, "Lost Coast" by Gabriella Smith, features Gabriel Cabezas in a cello concerto that captures the raw beauty and emotional turmoil associated with California’s northern coastline and the broader implications of climate change. Described by the Philadelphia Inquirer as "high-voltage and wildly imaginative," Smith's music promises to deliver an unforgettable auditory and emotional journey.

The second highlight of the evening is the world premiere of "PARHELION" by Bora Yoon. This piece is a testament to the Creative Lab's mission, utilizing the unique architecture of the Civic Auditorium to create an immersive sonic experience that transcends traditional concert norms. Through the collaboration with multimedia and design experts Joshue Ott of Interval Studios and Visual Endeavors, Yoon's composition will blend sound and light in an innovative performance that explores themes of time, seasons, and cycles. Ruth Crawford Seeger’s String Quartet 1931 reimagines rhythm and harmony, still sounding fresh almost a century later. Gabriella Smith’s Carrot Revolution (2015) is a thoroughly modern patchwork of “wildly contrasting influences,” weaving together elements from J. S. Bach, Celtic fiddle tunes, The Who, and more. Amy Williams’s new work, Tangled Madrigals, offers a contemporary take on medieval hockets—a dazzling technique in the hands of a string quartet—while the pioneering George Lewis stretches the quartet to its virtuosic limits in a 2022 JACK commission.

The State of California and the Bay Area itself has a unique ecosystem all its own with not only famous living composers residing and working here but their students tend to stay in the area and become well known which has led to generations of California taught and residing fabulous composers. They often use subject matter and musical inspirations are taken from their lives here, including the environment and nature which leave enough of a mark on them that when they leave they still paint the picture of what it is like to live in this great state. The piece we are featuring on this program by composer Ben Shirley does exactly that.  Ben Shirley was a student of Gabriela Lena Frank at the GLF Creative Academy of Music in Boonville, CA and his work High Sierra Sonata evokes the Eastern Sierra Mountains and the perseverance of runners who participate in high altitude running.  Ben is also a participant in the GLF "Composing Earth" project dedicated to the study of climate change, was a student at the San Francisco Conservatory of music and is a marathon runner featured in the film "Skid Row Marathon"

Gustavo Dudamel, the charismatic Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 2009, whose fiery baton has made him one of classical music’s most recognizable figures, will be departing his post at the LA Phil in September 2026 to become the new Music Director of the New York Philharmonic beginning September 2026. Don’t miss the upcoming opportunity on May 28 to experience Gustavo Dudamel’s dynamic presence on the podium as he leads the LA Phil in the closing concert of CAMA’s 2023/2024 International Series season.

The May 28 concert will feature Gustavo Dudamel conducting Ludwig van Beethoven’s high-spirited Symphony No.7 in A Major, Op.92, plus two world premieres of works by noted American composers Ellen Reid and Gabriella Smith, with cellist Gabriel Cabezas as soloist in Smith’s Lost Coast, inspired by her reflections on climate change.

Celebrate the holiday season with Ludwig van Beethoven's hymn to humanity, featuring the Eugene Symphony Chorus and a work by First Symphony Composer Gabriella Smith.

There is no experience that compares to hearing a live performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s hymn to humanity, starting with the sounds of order emerging from chaos on through to the spine-tingling “Ode to Joy” that will bring you out of your seat in exultation at the end. We also hear First Symphony Project composer Gabriella Smith’s collage of sounds inspired by the natural world, an a capella work sung by the Eugene Symphony Chorus, and another stunning but rarely heard work for chorus and orchestra by Beethoven, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage.

California-based French conductor Ludovic Morlot celebrates the music of his native land with two masterworks by his great 19th century compatriot Camille Saint-Saëns: the Third Violin Concerto, written for the great Spanish virtuoso Sarasate and brimming with sweet melodies; and the composer’s most famous symphony, known as the Organ Symphony for its sumptuous organ writing which dramatically extends and deepens the colors of the orchestra. It's the ideal music to celebrate the fabulous new sound of our own completely renovated Robert Morton pipe organ in Jacobs Music Center!

The orchestra throws down a challenge, and the piano strides forward with one of the grandest tunes Tchaikovsky ever wrote. Seabirds wheel and soar, and jet-streams trace fabulous patterns across the blue Pacific sky. And in the silence of dawn, a young artist walks out on a lifelong voyage: a tale of struggle and joy, turmoil and triumph. Three very different composers, and three different openings – but each one is just the start of an adventure, told today by the BBC SSO and conductor Tito Muñoz, who created such a buzz at City Halls in 2022. Pianist Alim Beisembayev is the soloist; this 2021 Leeds International Piano Competition winner has been described as “positively luminous”.
