It’s Mascagni’s homage to Rossini and to the Italian opera buffa and commedia dell’arte traditions. It was premiered simultaneously in six Italian opera houses but, apart from Rome, the reception was subdued. While it has often been held that Mascagni was a ‘one opera man’ who could never repeat the success of Cavalleria rusticana, this verdict has already been debunked by Wexford’s four previous Mascagni productions, most recently Guglielmo Ratcliff in 2015.

Praied for her "luminous voice" with its "easy soaring range," she has been noted for her "wonderful acting" and declared "simply superb" by Opera Today. In the spring of 2019, Ms. Basler appeared with the Boston Lyric Opera as Moira in Poultries Ruder's The Handmaid's Tale and made a company debut with Boston Midsummer opera as Clorinda in La Cenerentola. In the fall of 2019, Ms. Basler joined the Metropolitan Opera roster, covering Pousette in Manon. Under the baton of Scott Jackson Wiley and staged by Sabrina Palladino, the opera features a talented cast led by Sara Beth Pearson, Dilara Unsal, and Lara Tillotson as Santuzza, and Christopher Trapani, Paolo Buffagni, and Giwooung Kim as Turiddu, among others.

La Mer: an endless source of inspiration for artists from Claude Debussy to Charles Trenet. It really doesn’t have to be the Côte d’Azur or the Mediterranean coasts. Ostend was Europe’s leading seaside town in the late 19th century. A place where you could enjoy sun, sea and beach. Where one could parade among the beau monde. Where you could simultaneously listen and be seen at the Kursaal’s renowned concerts and recitals. They had the very greatest conductors and composers on the rostrum and the largest stars in classical music were visiting… and one James Sidney Edouard Ensor was in the loyal audience. The quirky painter was a loyal guest at the Théâtre Royale d’Ostende.

Helmed by Anne Marie Ketchum, who is celebrating forty consecutive years as Artistic Director of the organization, Cavalleria Rusticana will star award-winning mezzo soprano Audrey Babcock as Santuzza, tenor Todd Wilander as Turiddu, who comes to the production direct from the Metropolitan Opera, and renowned baritone Roberto Perlas Gómez, who, with over 100 roles to his credit, has performed extensively throughout the United States. The Verdi Chorus, the only choral group in Southern California that focuses primarily on the dramatic and diverse music for opera chorus, will join the opera.

Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana is considered the first verismo opera, which is focused not on mythological figures, or kings and queens, but of the much earthier daily struggles and emotions of men and women. And it depicts the emotionally charged, and sometimes violent situations that can result. According to Opera Online, “Cavalleria Rusticana, which could be translated as “rustic chivalry,” is characterised by the extreme simplicity of its plot in which fits of jealousy clash with the exaltation of honour. Mascagni was able to retain all the power of a bloody news story. Verdi himself, after hearing the work, said ‘I can die in peace.’”

Turiddu and Lola have happily rekindled their old love, but Lola’s husband finds out, and Santuzza feels betrayed, all with dire consequences. Conductor James Gaffigan brings an international reputation as an opera conductor, and he tells this tale with white-hot intensity.

Cavalleria Rusticana. Mascagni’s most loved opera that evolves in a domestic drama in a Sicilian village of love, betrayal, jealousy and death. Great melodies and one of the most beautiful Intermezzo (musical intermission) ever written. A young man Turiddu is in love with his friend’s wife Lola before departing for the army. At his return he promises to marry Santuzza a villager girl pregnant by Turiddu while he still secretly sees Lola while her husband Alfio is out of town for work. Santuzza offended by the betrayal encounters Lola’s husband to tell him all about Turiddu and his wife. That bring to revenge, honor recovery and drama.

Suor Angelica. One of Puccini’s Tryptic that includes Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi is a true gem of musical drama of a young woman later called Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) a daughter of a noble Florentine family, has spent the last seven years in the seclusion of a convent as punishment for her sin. Having become an expert at crafting herbal remedies, her true, hidden desire is to hear from her family once again, and to gather news of her illegitimate son whom she has not seen since his birth and her banishment. She is being stripped of her wealth and inheritance rights forced by her aunt The Principessa (The princess) Finally dies by poisoning herself with the vision of her son walking to her before dying while a celestial chorus of angels is heard.

 Deadline: midnight of November 27th 2022. The Virtuoso&Belcanto Festival selects four young Italian singers (two female and two male voices) for the 2023 Easter Concert. The selected soloists will perform, accompanied by the Sinfonie Orchester Berlin and conducted by Maestro Svetoslav Borisov, at the Berlin Philharmonic's Great Hall as part of the 2022-23 season of the Populäre Konzerte, a season organized by Konzertdirektion Prof. Victor Hohenfels.
