The New Year is entering in high spirits and in the best of spirits – a very special one for the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra: June 1, 2026, marks the 80th anniversary of their founding. Over the decades, they have opened up the entire cosmos of great music to their audiences. The New Year's Concert offers something for everyone: the folkloric, the exhilarating, the romantic, the virtuosic. In the overture to his successful operetta The Merry Widow, Franz Lehár ignites a sparkling firework display of immortal hits. Keywords: Da geh' ich ins Maxim, Vilja-Lied, Ja, das Studium der Weiber (Yes, the Study of Women)… A top-class symphonic concertante piece is also on the program: the dazzling and joyful A minor Cello Concerto by the all-round genius Camille Saint-Saëns. Also appearing with us for the first time is the versatile and virtuoso cellist Bryan Cheng from Canada, a recipient of top competition awards. Harris, who served as music and artistic director of the San José Wind Symphony until his retirement in 2022. Under the direction of Dr. David Vickerman, the San José Wind Symphony will perform a program that reflects Dr. Harris' profound impact on the ensemble and its audiences. In honor of Ed's instrument, the concert features Steve Sanchez, clarinetist, performing Oscar Navarro's II Concerto. The concert also features some of Ed's favorite works for band, as we celebrate his passion, dedication, and the musical excellence he fostered. The UMD Wind Ensemble closes its 2024-25 season with a vibrant program showcasing works by leading wind band composers. Percy Grainger’s Children’s March: Over the Hills and Far Away opens the performance with its playful, almost folk-like charm, evoking the carefree spirit of children at play. In contrast, Carter Pann’s Hold This Boy and Listen, offers a more subdued and wistful reflection on childhood.

Music carries its own genetic code. It reveals who we are, and where we come from. It holds the identities of entire communities and has no respect for political boundaries. Music moves freely across borders, even when people cannot.  This exciting program will feature six exciting works from around the world, showcasing classical masterpieces inspired by rich folk traditions.  The orchestra opens with the lively Dances of Galánta by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, which combines traditional folk melodies from the composer’s home region with a symphonic context. Rimsky-Korsakov’s technicolor masterpiece, Russian Easter Overture is a carefully calculated explosion of orchestral color reflecting popular Russian feelings on this highest Christian feast. Native American folk songs will also be highlighted in a new and thrilling work from Mark Piszczek, titled Song Catcher.  The concert is rounded out with three very popular works from around the globe, Aaron Copland’s exciting Billy the Kid, Percy Grainger’s gorgeous Irish Tune from County Derry, and Dvorak’s electrifying Slavonic Dances.

Under the baton of conductor Shawn Vondran, with the talented Gail Williams on horn, the Symphonic Band will present a poignant and captivating program. The concert will feature the premiere of "Sure-fire," a new concerto by the acclaimed Australian composer Catherine Likhuta. This moving piece serves as a lament for the tragic loss of native animal life in Australia during the devastating brushfires of 2019 and 2020. The program will also include Samuel Barber’s "Medea’s Dance of Vengeance," a powerful work derived from the composer’s ballet suite, which itself is based on the ancient Greek tragedy by Euripedes.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome the UW–Madison Wind Ensemble and their conductor, Scott Teeple, to our organ series in what I hope is one of many future collaborations. Pairing the forces of our Klais with the full band will blow you away in this electrifying program. With large ensemble works such as Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry (“Danny Boy”), as well as intimate works like Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe arranged for organ and saxophone featuring a soloist from the ensemble, I cannot think of a more powerful way to close out the 23/24 season! – Greg Zelek

Join us for an enchanting afternoon of chamber music at the "String Spring Fling," presented by the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra (THSO). This special event will take place on Sunday, March 17, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Hatfield Hall, located within the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 5500 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, IN, 47803.

Under the artistic direction of Dr. David Bowden, the THSO Strings and Principal Harp, Melanie Mashner, will deliver a performance filled with lush string sounds and the warm beauty of harp vibrations. The concert will feature the return of Elina Rubio, our recent concertmaster, who will dazzle the audience with a solo performance of Ravel’s Tzigane Gypsy Dance. Additionally, Elina will join forces with our current concertmaster, Erina Buchholz, for a memorable rendition of the second movement of Bach’s Double Concerto.

The program also includes a variety of pieces that promise to captivate and delight, from waltzes and a Strauss polka played pizzicato to a mesmerizing new work by Caroline Shaw, Entr’acte for Strings, and the stunning Fratres by Arvo Pärt. The concert will conclude with a selection of pieces including a jig by Grainger, a Hoe-Down by Copland, and a beautiful harp concert aria featuring Melanie Mashner.

This 75 to 80-minute performance will be held without intermission, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the music. Following the concert, a VIP reception will offer the chance to meet and mingle with the musicians.

The Pomona College Band, one of the oldest college bands in the country, was founded in 1909. It is the concert band for The Claremont Colleges and is funded by Pomona College. The band’s membership is drawn from students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges, and members of the local community. Its goal is to prepare significant music in a collaborative atmosphere for performance at the highest level. They present two sets of concerts each academic year and have performed music by composers from Sousa to Bernstein and Ives to Rossini.
